Surrounded by thick, lush cloud forest, Monteverde is one of the most beautiful places in all of Central America. Monteverde town a hub of activity while the nature reserve of the same name is brimming with wildlife and exotic vegetation. This vast expanse of green stretches as far as the eye can see and is a glorious reminder of Mother Nature’s beauty and diversity. If you want to make sure you’re taking full advantage of everything this place has to offer, here we’ve rounded up some of our top things to do in Monteverde for you to enjoy.
Cross the Sky Walk
The Sky Walk consists of six bridges suspended dozens of metres above the floor of the forest, and is by far the best way to see the cloud forest in all its glory. The walk is surprisingly easy, making the excursion perfect for pretty much anyone with legs. From this elevated height, some spectacular vistas can be had of the forest and, if you’re lucky, of some of the exciting animals that live within it. The walk spans roughly 2.5km and should be taken at a leisurely pace in order to fully absorb your surroundings.
If you’re looking to get the adrenaline pumping then this should be at the very top of your to-do list. There is no other feeling that quite compares to soaring across the top of this beautiful forest, suspended from a wire and screaming with excitement (or fear). While this isn’t the best way to see the scenery, as you’re moving so fast, those sweeping glimpses make it well worth doing. It is also super fun and definitely something everyone should tick off their bucket list.
Go Horseback Riding
Want to see the forest from ground level but don’t want to lug yourself around? Let a horse lug you around instead! With frequent stops to check out the scenery and explore the area, these rides are absolutely perfect for anyone who has a lot of time to spend here and wants to get up close and personal with nature. The trips usually cover Santa Elena and parts of the forest and are, of course, much better for the environment than taking a vehicle.
Take a Coffee Tour
Caffeine fans should take the time to explore Costa Rica’s most famous grain. Coffee is one of the most widely-known things to have ever come out of Costa Rica and remains one of the world’s most popular drinks. The tours on offer in Monteverde will guide you through the various stages of coffee production, from farming all the way through to factory processing. You might even get to sample of this heavenly beverage yourself if you play your cards right.
Eat at Taco Taco
Do you like food? Of course you do. Taco Taco is the finest eatery in Santa Elena (by our reckoning) and serves up colossal meals that can satisfy even the most ferocious appetite. The quesadillas (which we wholly recommend) are served with a side of nachos and some chipotle dip and they are absolutely to die for. They also do pretty sensational burritos and other various Mexican gastronomic delights. The best thing about this place though? It’s about half of the price of most other places, meaning you’ll have enough money left over to order seconds.
Visit the Butterfly Garden
These beautiful creatures are often overlooked in favour of larger animals that dwell in the forest, like monkeys and jaguars. However, the stunning array of butterflies that flutter freely through this garden are certainly worth some of your time and are guaranteed to astound you with their colours and size. In addition to the butterflies, there are dozens of other insect species at the centre, including various different types of ants and spiders.
