Day 5

22 February. Abu Simbel – Aswan - Nile Felucca Cruise. Possibly the most awe-inspiring temple of all ancient Egypt, with its gargantuan rock-cut façade, the great Sun Temple of King Ramses II at Abu Simbel was created to revere the mighty pharaonic ruler King Ramses II. Guarding the entrance to the temple (built between 1290 and 1224 BC) shewn into the side of a mountain are four famous colossal statues of the pharaoh himself, which sit majestically staring out across the desert. Over the centuries, the desert sands imperceptibly shifted until the temple was all but lost to humanity. It was rediscovered by chance in 1813 by a Swiss explorer called John Lewis Burkhardt. Only one of the heads of the pharaohs was showing and only a small part of the rest of the colossal temple peeked above the desert sands. It wasn’t until the British happened upon Abu Simbel and starting excavating, that the full glory of the temple of Abu Simbel was revealed to the modern world.

In a fit of precision and architectural egotism, Ramses II had the entire temple carefully angled and oriented in order that the sun’s rays would align twice a year on his date of his ascension to the throne (21 February) and on his birthday (21 October) and illuminate the inner sanctum of the temple. This incredible natural phenomenon provides for a most spectacular sight, which has come to be referred to as the Sun Festival of King Ramses II. Crowds pack in to the temple before sunrise and watch the shafts of light slowly creeping through the rock hewn inner Hypostyle Hall (replete with further statues of the king) and through to the Sanctuary. As we are lead through the temple there will be time to pause for a moment to watch the sun illuminating the statues of Amun-Re, Re-Herakhte and Ramses the god, whilst the statute of Ptah - the god of darkness - remains in the shadows.

Famously, the temple was re-located in a multi-million dollar operation in 1972, further up from the shoreline of Lake Nasser, which had threatened to erode the foundations of this monolithic temple complex. For this reason, the sun now strikes a day later than Ramses had originally planned, though the event this morning itself is no less stunning. After the event, there will also be plenty of time to explore the Sun Temple of King Ramses II and also the Temple of Hathor and take plenty of pictures.

After watching the incredible event unfold, we return to Aswan, to board our Nile felucca for a 2 night voyage downstream on the River Nile.

If sailing by felucca is not your style, consider upgrading to a 5 star luxury Nile Cruise, please see the tab above for prices. For more information about Nile Cruising please click here. Our Nile cruise upgrade is offered from day 5 (prior to travelling to Abu Simbel) and ends on day 8.

Days 9-11

Hurghada by the Red Sea

Hurghada is one of the Red Sea's most popular resorts and it is easy to see why. For retail therapy, the town has plenty of shops selling knock-off bags and tees, snorkeling gear and suchlike. Just outside Hurghada is an ancient Roman quarry called Mons Porphyritis and Port Safarga – a famously windy place and King Kong of windsurfer paradises.

I'm happy to say, I've finally been able to cross this one off my bucket list! I've been wanting so long to see Egypt but never felt it was safe. I decided to try it with 3 other friends and I am so glad I did. I never felt unsafe and the sites we visited were incredible. Alam made the trip delightful and he was so knowledgeable, it was amazing and we didn't want it to end. We were in a group of 21 and Alam looked out for all of us. We weren't quite sure what to expect on the Felucca but it was probably one of the highlights, this part of the trip we all bonded on. We could not have asked for a better guide, thanks ALAM, 5+

We had a great great time in Egypt on the Sunchaser tour with our Egyptologist and guide, Alam Mido.

This was a long-time dream for me to see Egypt with its Pyramids; Sphinx and to experience their Egyptian history, culture and customs.

Alam and the rest of the group (who became very good friends) made it come true for me! with Alam's extensive knowledge of Egypt's history and his passion for his country. His history lessons never bored me, but the time just passed to quickly and with sadness the tour had to come to an end.

Friends & family were worried when I told them I was going to Egypt but I felt totally safe throughout the entire tour. The expected hassling from the hawkers in the tourist areas did not even let me feel one bit unsafe as they just want to sell their merchandise to you. Walking in the various cities at night to experience their Nubian and Egyptian food, shopping or nightlife to drinking local drinks, such as Hibiscus tea or a hot mango juice at local restaurants or cafes did not pose any problems for us. We normally went out in a group and guided by Alam. If you are hesitating to pick Egypt as your next holiday destination, don't hesitate to book your tour. I felt perfectly safe and will recommend this to anyone.

One of the highlights were Abu Simbel despite the crowds. Not to mention the pyramids, Sphinx, valley of the kings with their impressive burial chambers. Luxor temple by night was the most spectacular sight.

On the Go you can be proud to have such amazing employees who represents your company in a very professional way.

Had a great great time in Egypt with our guide, Alam! This was long-time dream for me and Alam (and the rest of the group) made it come true for me! Friends & family were worried when I told them I was going to Egypt but I felt safe throughout the tour, except for the expected hassling from the hawkers. My favourite highlights were Abu Simbel (despite the crowds), sailing on the Nile in a felluca (ahh the peace and quiet) and Alexandria - it wasn't part of the tour but our guide allowed us time to go into the new Library and do a bit of reading which was soo awesome!

If you are hesitating to pick Egypt as your next holiday destination, don't - it's perfectly safe and it's a dream come true to hear the stories of pyramids and pharaohs come to life!

Thank you, On The Go!
