About Tunku Abdul Rahman Park

Off the coast of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah lies a cluster of islands that forms the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Just a short 20 minute speedboat ride from the state capital, the five jungle-covered humps that mark the horizon and appear as dark silhouettes at sunset are the islands of Manukan, Gaya, Sapi, Mamutik and Sulug. Golden sand beaches ring lush forests and front colourful coral reefs that are home to a staggering array of marine life from octopus to shark. Snorkelling and diving are a popular activity and particularly good around the islands of Gaya and Sapi with a dive centre on Gaya. Between November and February you may also be lucky enough to see a migrating whale shark in the pristine turquoise waters.

Of the five islands, Manukan, Mamutik and Sapi are the most popular especially on weekends when city dwellers from KK head to the beach for a day of sun, sea and sand. Gaya island is the largest of the islands with a handful of resorts and idyllic beaches while Sulug island has no facilities at all and remains quiet, visited mostly by divers. Sapi island is good for nature walks with a number of trails that offer the chance to see macaques and hornbills. Some of the best beaches in the marine park are found on Sapi though the facilities here are quite simple. The crescent-shaped Manukan island is the busiest of the islands with plenty of amenities close to the attractive beach while Mamutik draws snorkellers with its impressive coral gardens.
