Please note: This tour is designed for younger travellers looking for a backpacker-style experience and to meet like-minded people. The average age on this tour is around 21 - 35, and we are unfortunately unable to take any travellers over the age of 39. We have lots of group tours across our destinations that are suitable for travellers of all ages, browse our website or get in touch to find the perfect trip!

Overnight: San Jose

Day 2 - San Jose & La Fortuna

San Jose - La Fortuna. Today, we explore Costa Rica's capital, San Jose on a walking tour of the city. Our local guide will showcase the fascinating architecture and historical landmarks at every turn. Afterward, we'll depart the city and head to La Fortuna, making a stop at the Ox Cart Museum along the route. These intricately decorated carts were crucial to Costa Rican farm life and have become a national emblem.

Upon reaching La Fortuna, the entry point to Costa Rica's breathtaking wilderness, it's impossible to miss the towering Arenal Volcano that dominates the landscape. Once primarily a farming community, this delightful town is now famous for its geothermal activity and wellness retreats tucked away in the jungle. It's time to embrace the pura vida spirit!

Overnight: La Fortuna
Meals: Breakfast

Day 3 - Arenal Volcano Trek

We'll get even closer to Arenal Volcano today with a trek into the jungle and around the volcano. We'll explore various trails, each providing stunning views of the volcano and its lava fields. As evening descends and the sun sets, a different world of wildlife comes to life. We’ll venture into the jungle after dark to uncover its nocturnal wonders, guided safely by an enthusiastic expert who will point out the creatures we come across, potentially rare frogs, monkeys, reptiles and even tapirs.

Overnight: La Fortuna
Meals: Breakfast

Day 4 - La Fortuna

Today is our final day in La Fortuna, and we begin with a visit to a local family, who have lived in La Fortuna for generations. They will guide us around their farm, where we might observe some of the wildlife that shares their home. You'll learn about the harvesting of local fruits and vegetables and have the opportunity to taste some exceptionally sweet fruits. The family will also demonstrate how to prepare a traditional Casado lunch, paired with freshly brewed coffee from their own farm. This afternoon, you'll have the chance to relax in natural hot springs, celebrated for their healing properties due to the volcanic mineral waters.

Overnight: La Fortuna
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 5 - Rio Celeste National Park & Rincon de la Vieja

La Fortuna - Rio Celeste National Park - Rincon de la Vieja. Leaving La Fortuna, our first stop today is at a traditional Maleku house. The Maleku are one of Costa Rica's indigenous groups, and this visit provides a unique opportunity to learn about their traditional lifestyle.

Next, we make our way into Rio Celeste National Park. The park is most well-known for the colour of its water (and waterfall) - a stunning diamond blue hue.

In the afternoon, we’ll reach Rincon de la Vieja, and can settle into our jungle accommodation, surrounded by the sounds of the wild.

Overnight: Rincon de la Vieja
Meals: Breakfast

Day 6 - Rincon de la Vieja

Get ready for an adventure in Rincon de la Vieja National Park, where the jungle trails are a great place to take in some of Costa Rica's incredible biodiversity. In the morning, we'll hike through the park, exploring volcanic vents and mud pits, and encountering its diverse wildlife, which includes over 300 bird species, as well as monkeys, tapirs, reptiles, and possibly even a jaguar - you're more likely to hear the coughing roar of the big cats than you are to spot one.

In the afternoon, you can unwind by the hotel pool, enjoying the calming sounds of the jungle. Alternatively, there's the option to zipline through the forest canopy, gliding above the misty treetops and descending into the mountains.

Overnight: Rincon de la Vieja
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7 - Rincon de la Vieja to Samara

Rincon de la Vieja - Liberia - Samara. Our journey continues as we make our way towards Samara. On the way, we’ll stop in Liberia for lunch (no, not that one!) and take a brief walking tour with a local guide to experience a more authentic side of Costa Rica. Following this, we'll visit a village known for its traditional pottery, where the craft is still a vibrant aspect of local life. We'll have the chance to watch a pottery-making demonstration at the home of a local family.

We then complete the journey to our final destination. Samara, a small coastal town, with a laid-back vibe, offers stunning sandy beaches, sunny skies, and swaying palm trees. Over the next few nights, you’ll have plenty of time to soak in the picturesque surroundings and enjoy some beach volleyball. It's time to hit the beach!

Overnight: Samara
Meals: Breakfast

Day 8 - Beach Hopping

Pack your beach towel and sunscreen because today we're exploring the breathtaking coastline of Guanacaste. We'll visit several nearby beaches, often regarded as some of the most beautiful in Costa Rica, complete with palm trees, white sand, crystal-clear blue waters, and unspoiled beauty. You’ll have the whole day to enjoy various activities - whether it’s playing football, relaxing with a good book, snorkelling among coral reefs, or playing music as the sun sets. There's also plenty of time to sunbathe. Whatever your perfect beach day entails, let's make it a reality.

Overnight: Samara
Meals: Breakfast

Day 9 - Samara at Leisure

Today is completely free for you to explore everything Samara has in store, or to do absolutely nothing - it's up to you. Whether you're interested in a calming yoga session or something more adventurous like a surf lesson or sea kayaking with snorkelling, there's something for everyone. Alternatively, relaxing by the sea with a cold drink and soaking up the sun is always a great choice.

Overnight: Samara
Meals: Breakfast

Day 10 - Samara to Esterillos

Samara - Esterillos. This morning, we journey south to Esterillos, a beachside haven famous for its surfing. This is a relatively quiet corner of Costa Rica and it's not unusual to find this vast beach nearly deserted. This picturesque town and its beach often go unnoticed by tourists, providing an ideal chance to enjoy the breathtaking Costa Rican coastline without the crowds. Once we check into our hotel, you'll have the afternoon to explore the charming local town and experience the laid-back pace of Costa Rican life. We'll come together for sunset drinks and soak in the relaxed atmosphere.

Overnight: Esterillos
Meals: Breakfast

Day 11 - Manuel Antonio National Park

Esterillos - Manuel Antionio National Park - Esterillos. Today, we are visiting the breathtaking Manuel Antonio National Park, so make sure your camera is at the ready! As Costa Rica's most visited national park, you'll soon see why during our exploration of its jungles and beautiful beaches. Be on the lookout for wildlife, such as the beloved sloths. After our jungle adventure, we'll make our way to the park’s stunning beaches for some sun and relaxation. Keep an eye out for the playful monkeys that inhabit this tropical sanctuary with us. We head back to Esterillos for the night.

Overnight: Esterillos
Meals: Breakfast

Day 12 - Crocs & San Jose

Esterillos - San Jose. Departing the coast, we begin our journey back to San Jose. En route, we'll pause at the Crocodile Bridge, providing an excellent view of these remarkable prehistoric animals.
