After preparing ourselves for the day ahead we set off along the sacred Inca Trail path. Starting at an altitude of 2,720 metres above sea level we make our way across the Vilcanota river and into the cloud forest on the other side. Our route will offer fantastic views of Inca ruins, including the Inca fortress of Huilca Raccay and the vast Inca site of Patallacta. Our final stop for the day will be at our campsite near the small village of Wayllabamba (3,000m).
After a hearty breakfast on day 4 we continue our ascent, along a part of the trail which once served as a sacred pilgrimage route for the Incas, until we reach the highest pass of the trek at Warrmi Wanusqa (4,200m), often referred to as 'Dead Woman's Pass'. This is one of the hardest parts of the Inca Trail and after a well deserved rest we continue to Pacaymayu (3,550m) for our lunch stop. After lunch we will begin a steep ascent to Runkurakay pass (4,000m) where we will stop for the night.
Day 5 you'll awake to incredible scenery and unique landscapes before we set off on a gentle ascent to the archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca (3,680m), which means 'town in the clouds'. We'll continue up through the clouds to the impressive Inca site of Intipata before heading on to our campsite at Winay Wayna. Close to our campsite you'll find the Inca ruins of the same name, a site that is well worth a visit.
