Continue down University Embankment, a long stretch alongside the Great Neva River lined with impressive buildings, and pass the monumental Admiralty building, the headquarters of the Russian Navy. Nearby view the Bronze Horseman, an impressive monument mounted on a large rock dedicated to the founder of the city, Alexander the Great.

Next explore some of the city’s most impressive cathedrals, including the lavish golden domed St Isaac’s Cathedral, one of the largest and most important Russian Orthodox churches in the city, and the Peter and Paul Cathedral, an 18th century church that houses the tombs of the Romanov Tsars. Following a break for lunch embark on a tour of the Hermitage, the former home of the Tsars which now houses a collection of fine art, collected from the far reaches of the world.
