Are you ready to explore why Phuket is often considered one of Thailand's top foodie hotspots? Greet your guide in the cool of the morning at 10am outside the city's famous central market and begin your walking tour weaving your way through the streets passing a glorious Chinese temple en route to try a Phuketian classic snack of spiced rice cooked in banana leaves.

Back down at the market, your guide will take you to a hidden little teashop which serves the local Burmese working community. Here, you'll try Burmese curries, crispy samosas and other delights accompanied by naans freshly cooked in their wood-fired oven and washed down with sweet tea.

Just down the road is a fine outdoor fresh fruit and vegetable market where your guide will explain the ingredients that go into Thai cuisine and sample exotic fruits, juices are other tasty morsels like deep-fried coconut balls and prawns cooked in banana leaves.

Continue on your culinary adventure by working your way over a bowl of rich Hokkien noodles with a pair of chopsticks (don't worry, cutlery's available too) from a little restaurant that's been serving up the good stuff for decades.

Don't worry, it's not over yet. Your guide will take you to a local indoor market famed for its fresh spring rolls filled with cured pork and topped with sweet sauce and pickles and coconut pork skewers served with rich peanut satay and zingy ajat cucumber relish.

It's unthinkable not to visit Phuket Old Town without delving into the sweets. Your guide will take you for a particularly special Phuket-style crepe cooked over fiery coals, a refreshing and vivid iced dessert and finishing on sweet milky tea and flaky rotis at a joint that's been knocking them out for years.

Return back to the central market where the tour ends. You'll return back to your hotel with a deeper understanding of Phuketian cuisine. Be warned, the food on the rest of your vacation will now solely disappoint.

Wow, what a great tour to experience all kinds of food at the phuket central market!! Our tour guide was fantastic, friendly and so knowledgeable of the foods we ate. Our group was small with only 7 persons that made us feel like family after the end of the day. All our fellow tour partners were so full of great food, none had much more stomach room for just that last bite.

Food tours are our favorite way to get a real flavor of a new location. Our food tour of Phuket Town was like no other tour we have ever had. Just my wife and I were on this particular tour. Pema was our guide but she was so much morea friend, a gourmand, a cultural expert, a historian and a real treat. In the past, food tours have lasted about 4 hours. Pema greeted us with the information that she has never completed her tour in less than 5 hours. That was fine with us. After 7 ¾ hours of touring and eating, and eating and then eating some more, we had to call it quits even though Pema had two more places she wanted to share with us. She didnt give us our goodbye hugs until she handed us bottles of cold water to drink on the way back to our hotel in Mai Khao and deposited us into a reliable taxi to get us there. Pema was the best!! The food selections were very diverse and very copious. Our first stop was at a Myanmar restaurant that served us a huge and amazing breakfast. And the tea was fantastic too. One stop was at Muslim restaurant that stretched coffee, which is actually repeatedly pouring brewed coffee from one pot to another from a significant distance which creates a thick froth. Not only was it entertaining not a drop was spilled, it was also delicious. We continued our tour with samples which were more like whole meals from a variety of ethnic cultures interspersed with visiting landmarks, seeing a myriad of Phukets murals, discussions of the horticulture, the history of the town, the temples etc. I dont think we missed a thing to see or something to eat and yet, if I ever returned to Phuket, I would do this tour all over again if Pema was our guide. She was energetic, engaging and amusing. There was nothing perfunctory about her.

We thought this would be a great way to start our first day in Phuket, and we could not have been more right! Our guide Pema was bubbly and so full of energy! The food was AMAZING, and the variety was awesome. Walking through the markets to see how they process coconuts and the huge bowls of curry pastes were wonderful. We had another couple on our tour, and Pema took good care of all (the other couple was vegan). We had lamb, a huge variety of seafood, pork, chicken and beef. Huge array of fruits and vegetables and sweets. We ate in restaurants and from food carts. And she had tons of knowledge about the area as she grew up on the island and went to school near the market. Don't miss it!
