Day 1

San Jose

Welcome to Costa Rica! Upon arrival to San Jose airport you will be transferred to your hotel to check in before having the rest of the day at your leisure. Take a stroll through the central market and try some local delicacies or explore one of the many theatres and museums this enchanting city has to offer before our tour starts tomorrow.

Day 2


San Jose - Tortuguero. This morning we meet our tour leader after breakfast and set off to Tortuguero National Park, which is known as “land of the turtles”. On the journey we drive through the beautiful rainforest of Braulio Carrillo National Park, where we enjoy some of Costa Rica’s most picturesque views. We will also pass several banana plantations - the fruit grows very well in the Caribbean sun, and Costa Rican bananas are exported all over the world.

Arriving at the port in Limon we board a shuttle service boat which takes us along inland jungle canals to our lodge in Tortuguero National Park, located on the Atlantic/Caribbean coast. This popular national park, which incorporates eleven different habitats including rain forests, swamps, beaches and lagoons, is literally teeming with wildlife and famous for its turtles. After checking into our accommodation we take a scenic boat ride through the canals to visit Tortuguero village and the Sea Turtle Conservancy Centre.

Day 3

Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero National Park is renowned for being an important turtle habitat. Green Sea turtles, leatherback turtles and Hawksbill turtles all nest on the beaches here so if you come at the right time of year you may have the opportunity to some of these beautiful little creatures hatch as you take a stroll along the famous turtle nesting trail. Today we cruise along the extensive canal system of natural and man-made waterways to explore the national park and witness the rich wildlife of monkeys, iguanas, and colourful tropical birds hiding in the jungle around us.

Note: The Green Sea and Hawksbill turtle’s nesting season runs from July to October with the peak in August, and the Leatherback turtles nest from February to April.

Day 4

Santa Rosa de Pocosol

Tortuguero - Santa Rosa de Pocosol. We leave tranquil Tortuguero behind to continue our journey to Puerto de Santa Rosa de Pocosol, where we get a fascinating insight into the daily life of the locals, known as Ticos. After a warm welcome we are taken on a guided walk through the village and get to sample delicious fresh fruits from the trees. There's also the opportunity to participate in an optional workshop where you can learn how to cook like a local or make arts and crafts with the village ladies. We spend the next two nights at a homestay with a local family.

Day 5

Juanilama Reservation Hike

After breakfast we embark on a scenic hike through the ecological reserve in Juanilama until we reach the beautiful La Leona waterfall. Here we can take a dip in the clear water and if we're lucky we may even see some pakas, agutis, frogs or rare howling monkeys. This evening enjoy a tasty dinner with your homestay family.

Days 6-7

La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano

Santa Rosa de Pocosol - La Fortuna. On day 6 we set our sights on La Fortuna de San Carlos, one of the main tourist destinations in Costa Rica and home to the famous Arenal Volcano which overlooks the town. Here we have two days to explore the amazing natural landscapes and discover what makes this town so special. In the afternoon you can take a relaxing bath in the hot springs that owe their warm temperatures to the volcanic activities and in the evening consider a night walk, where you can spot nocturnal creatures.

Day 7 is free to enjoy a whole host of exciting optional activities such as hiking, kayaking, rappelling, rafting and cycling or simply relax and enjoy your beautiful surroundings. The Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve, Venado Caves, Fortuna waterfall and the Arenal Lake are some of the attractions at our fingertips.

Days 8-9

Samara Beach

La Fortuna – Samara Beach. Bidding farewell to Arenal we travel along Costa Rica's beautiful Pacific coastline to sunny Samara, which is our home for the next two nights. Known for having one of the prettiest and safest beaches in all of Costa Rica, Playa Samara also has a spectacular coral reef and wooded island in the bay – Isla Chora which is very popular with swimmers and windsurfers. As well as many shops, bars and restaurants Playa Samara has a thriving fishing and farming community unlike other Pacific Ocean resorts.

The next two days are free to relax on the idyllic beach or for the more adventurous there is an array of activities on offer – from snorkelling and diving to sport fishing, horse riding and bird watching.

Day 10

El Trapiche farm tour

Samara Beach – Monteverde. Leaving the beach behind we venture to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Known as the best Cloud Forest in Costa Rica, this lush reserve is a nature lovers paradise and an excellent place for bird watching. After checking into our hotel, we will visit El Trapiche for a tour of a local farm. Here we will see everything from small tilapia ponds to sugarcanes and coffee plants and embrace the local way of life while sampling some of their delicacies. This evening we return to our hotel for the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 11

Monteverde Cloud Forest

The day is free to explore the best Cloud Forest in Costa Rica! Uncover the natural beauty of the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve or the Butterfly Gardens. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush you could ride the longest zipline in Latin America, Bungee Jump, cross hanging bridges, go on a night-walk through the jungle and much more.

Day 12


Monteverde – Quepos. Known for being one of the best places in the world for big-game sport fishing, we venture to the vibrant city of Quepos, the gateway to the Manuel Antonio national park. The locals, also known as Quepenos, know how to celebrate life and dancing in the streets seems to be part of everyday life. Every year flocks of people descend on Quepos for the various concerts, parades and carnivals as well as admire the colourful flora and fauna surrounding the village. After checking into our hotel the evening is yours to explore this wonderful village.

Day 13

Manuel Antonio National Park

Known as one of the most bio diverse parks on the planet we spend the day discovering the natural wonders of Manuel Antonio National Park on a guided tour. This celebrated park is blessed with beautiful lagoons, palm fringed beaches, a vast array of animals and lush green forests. Some of the many creatures that call Manuel Antonio home include sloths, pelicans, white-faced monkeys, anteaters and huge iguanas. It is also famous for its four pristine Pacific beaches.

Day 14

San Jose

Quepos – San Jose. Leaving the Pacific Coast behind us we head to the sunny capital city of Costa Rica, San Jose. After checking in to our hotel the rest of the day is free to explore the capital or opt to visit the Volcano Poas National Park National Park. In the park you can see the largest volcanic lagoon in the world or take a boat down the cold water lake which flows from the mountain to the Sarapiqui River. Explore some of the many trails of the park and take a peek at over 80 species of birds that call this park home.

San Jose

It’s time to say adios to beautiful Costa Rica and the group. We can arrange a departure transfer upon request. We would be delighted to help you extend your stay in Costa Rica and book more nights for you if you’re still not quite ready to head home.

Offering just 12 guestrooms, the hotel has a very homely atmosphere and each of the rooms is equipped with a ceiling fan, security box and WiFi access. The local area not only offers a safe, residential vibe, but was also one of the first neighborhoods of the city dating back to the 1940s. You'll find buzzing restaurants, bars and shops to be just a short walk away.

Pachira Lodge, Tortuguero
