The monasteries are perched on top of towers of sandstone, which for centuries provided totally inaccessible retreats for the monks. It was erected in the mid-14th century and was the subject of restoration and embellishment projects in 1483 and 1552. The building serves as the main museum for tourists. The Katholikon (main church), consecrated in honour of the Transfiguration of Jesus was erected in the middle of 14th century and 1387/88 and decorated in 1483 and 1552.

Maria is knowledgable and an excellent guide. She gave a good explanation during the trip. Our driver was amazing too! Very friendly and nice people!

Our tour to Meteora was with the guide named Eva. She made our trip special in many ways - a lot of interesting facts, a pleasant style of telling stories, very attentive - both Eva and our driver. If you happen to travel with Eva, you’ll definitely stay impressed.

Breath taking views! Maria, our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of monasteries. She is also native to the region which makes her a specialist. We could not have asked for a better tour guide. This tour is ranked in the top 3 tours to visit as you will never get enough of staring in awe on the architectural integrity of these multiple monasteries in the sky!

We first hesitated whether a one day excursion from Athens would be too short and tiring. It worked out perfectly and are very glad we took the journey. A must see when you are in Greece. However, we wished the tour lady spoke more of the history instead of telling her personal view to mock

The guide and the driver were great, saw 2 monasteries,1 hour each, enough to be free to visit what we wanted. Confortable van and the knowledge of the guide was very interesting. Always accommodations in the train and in the monasteries. Not many tourists go in the city to eat, price not written everywhere cause it's higher than in athen and portions are smaller.

This is must visit when visiting Greece. The train journey is a bit hectic but it was worth it. Don't miss it for anything.

The train ride from Athens to Kalambaka was stressless comfortable and pleasant. Maria our tour guide was wonderful informative and very knowledgeable about the area having grown up in the area. She made the day for all of us. Great views stopping off and walking through the forest made this trip unforgettable. It was one in our bucket list. All worth it. Thank you Maria from Mary and Foti from Australia.

The train from Athens to Kalambaca was about 5 hrs. The ride provided a wonderful view of the country side, from very large farms, mountains, and small towns, Occasionally, there were one or two people on the train begging, but in most cases the conductor took care of them, The ride was comfortable. The tour began at Kalambaca. Our tour guide, Maria, was wonderful. She was a local and so full of knowledge about just about everything on the monasteries and the local area. The tour was so well arranged and conducted. We visited at least 5 monasteries, and these were fantastic! There were several very interesting stops along the tour for views or exploring. The entire trip was 14 hrs, but so interesting. Yes the ride was boring at times, especially on the way back, but the time goes by quick enough. We did arrive back to Athens while there was daylight, so getting back to the hotel was easy. This tour is highly recommended.

Maria was an excellent guide, very nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. Meteora itself was beautiful to see, and the monasteries and history were amazing to see and learn about.

The attraction itself was excellent. The train journey was too long. Lunch was not provided and there was little time to get something to eat before the tour. The tour guide was knowledgeable and effective. The entry fee to the Monasteries and lunch should be included in the trip.

Worth every minute despite very long train ride. A class tickets are must have. Local guide and driver Dimitris and Yanis were very friendly and knowledgeable. Recommend taking metro after returning to Athens. Cab drivers ar train station are complete rip off and become very agitated when you try to bring price down. Food on the train is meh and really no time to buy at Kalamaka. Take something lite with you.

It’s a long trip but we’ll worth it. If you have the time, I recommend going up one day, staying in a hotel and returning the next.

The few hours in Meteora were well worth this trip! We had Ilias as our guide. He was very timely and courteous and it was like our own private car. He stopped at the best sites for us to take photos and answered all of our questions. You can tell how much he loves his town and is proud of it. He even stayed with us for dinner and walked us right to the train door for our trip back to Athens. We saw two monasteries and stopped at plenty of other great viewing spots along the way. If you only have one day to visit Meteora you won't be disappointed.

I highly recommend this trip. The train ride from Athens was fairly long 5-6 hours each way, but still well worth it for the quality of the sights. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and the bus driver was an expert at helping participants get the best photos possible of the amazing landscapes.

What an amazing trip! Meteora does not disappoint, from the phenomenal vistas to the monasteries themselves. When you think of byzantine Greek Orthodox church murals...this is exactly what you see. It's breathtaking! Also, we had a great guide...Vasilly. He was knowledgeable, very nice and got us back to our return train with food and plenty of time to spare. We really liked him!!
