Stop At: Pachacamac, Autopista Antigua Panamericana Sur km 31 Close to Lurin, Lima 16 Peru

We will visit the Archeological Sanctuary of Pachacamac, just 30 kms. south of Lima. It was built in adobe with view to the sea and the Lurin river valley. It was a pilgrimage site for many cultures that developed in ancient Peru. Upon arrival of the Incas, the complex was adapted to become an administrative center, respecting and adapting the local constructions. You can find there the Temple of the Sun, the Acllahuasi, the Palace of Taurichumbi, and the Pilgrimage Plaza, among others. We will also visit the Site Museum to get a better insight and appreciate the salvaged remnants of the area.

The massive Temples of the Sun and the Moon are known to be the compound's most striking features. Built entirely of clay, an estimated 50 million sun-dried bricks were used in the construction of the Temple of the Sun alone. Excavations in the area continue to reveal further insights into the Moche and Huari cultures that spanned the period from 200 to 800 AD.

Took this tour yesterday and really enjoyed it. Nice informative museum. The smaller tour vehicles are allowed to drive to various parts of the site where you walk a shorter distance. This is helpful due to the huge area it covers.

The Pachacamac Archaeological site as magnificent and as interesting as Machu Picchu and at near sea level, the hiking around was much easier. The museum is a must visit to understand the pre-Inca and Inca occupation of the site.

Prepare to get dusty as you get out into the desert region. The tour of the museum on site was an added bonus, before we went out to see the archeological site of Pachacamac.

We had a wonderful tour of Pachacamac! The guide gave us a really nice driving tour of the city as well as of the site which gave us a chance to see parts of Lima we would not have otherwise seen. He also suggested the Micro theatre in Barranco which was a highlight for us and we would not have known of otherwise.

This site is well worth the visit, and the tour was of great value because of our knowledgeable guide. He explained not only the site, but also everything we drove by on the way to it. Driving in Peru is not for the faint of heart, so we recommend a tour or, at minimum, a taxi. It is fascinating to see how the Incan and earlier civilizations adapted to the desert, especially if you have seen stone ruins around Cusco and Machu Picchu. The top of the pyramid is one of the few places in the world you can see desert, lush greenery, freshwater ponds, and the ocean from the same vantage point - and use that sight to build an understanding of why Peru was one of the seats of human civilization.

What a find...this site is still being restored but the location on the hill in amongst favelas with a view out to the ocean is superb. Great guide with a lot of knowledge of the original inhabitants.

Pachamac was so much bigger and more excavated than I had imagined, and the new museum is worth a trip in itself. I wish the tour had included more time in the museum. Otherwise, the tour was well run and very organized.

The driver who picked me up from my hotel took me to the wrong place and left me there without checking that the tour bus was waiting, which meant that the day started out rather stressed! However, the tour itself was excellent - a very interesting site, with a very knowledgeable guide who gave life to the ruins by telling stories of the origins and uses of the various buildings.
