Trips and Tours to Kuching

About Kuching

Not only is Kuching the state capital of Sarawak but it's also Borneo's most charming and sophisticated cities with an attractive riverside setting overlooked by Mount Santubong. Rich in history and a melting pot of cultures, the city is a fascinating blend of old colonial architecture, Chinese temples and shop houses, and Malay kampungs - traditional hamlets centred around a mosque. Here you can explore lively bazaars where villagers come to sell their fruits, vegetables, fish and spices, or simply meander along the attractive waterfront deciding on where you might like to dine that day.

Kuching has plenty of attractions worth seeking out, chief among them the Ethnology Museum which presents engaging displays on Borneo’s incredibly rich indigenous cultures with reconstructed Iban longhouses and various tools and items used by the Iban, as well as art exhibitions with pieces created by local artists. Cat lovers will appreciate the quirky cat statues that have been erected to monopolise on the city's homonym name - Kuching means 'cat' in Bahasa Malaysia. There's also the whitewashed Fort Margherita and the peaceful Indian Mosque.

Whether you're interested in visiting Sarawak's caves, forests or ethnic communities, Kuching makes an excellent base for day trips or longer forays into the surrounding area. As the state's principal transport hub many journeys will start, end or pass through Kuching and from here you can visit the Semenggoh Orang Utan Wildlife Centre where you can come face to face with the fuzzy primates, the Fairy & Wind Caves with weird rock formations and huge chambers, and the Annah Rais Bidayuh Longhouse.
