Day 2 - Alexandria
Cairo – Alexandria. Early this morning we travel to the port side city of Alexandria on Egypt’s Mediterranean Coast. Founded by Alexander the Great, windswept Alexandria has wonderful beaches and an attractive seafront corniche, dotted with bars and restaurants. The first stop on our guided tour today is the Roman catacombs, the largest known Roman burial site in Egypt, which consist of three tiers of tombs and chambers. These remarkable 35m deep catacombs, contain over 300 mummies and were discovered accidentally in 1900 when a donkey drawn cart fell into a pit. We also visit Pompey’s Pillar and stop to see the exterior of the impressive Library of Alexandria, before taking a stroll along the corniche, with views of the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. At the end of the corniche stands the Citadel of Qaitbey, a striking fortress which was built during the 1480s. We take a guided tour of the citadel which is built over the remains of the great Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Hotel check in and time to freshen up before heading out for a drive along the corniche and dinner (included). Overnight - Alexandria (B, D)
Day 3 - El Alamein
Alexandria – El Alamein - Cairo. Leaving Alexandria we travel on to visit the Commonwealth War Graves of El Alamein today. Two extended World War II battles were fought at El Alamein, which resulted in 13,000 Allied soldiers being killed and 70,000 wounded. We visit the well-tended Commonwealth war cemetery and the informative El Alamein museum, which houses lots of original WWII memorabilia, and documents the complete history of World War II in North Africa. In the afternoon we return to Cairo. If you are commencing another tour with us you will be transferred to the tour start hotel. If not, please consider post tour accommodation.
