Pompeii Ruins & Mt Vesuvius Volcano with Lunch from Rome
from USD $145.82
Hike up Mount Vesuvius and then explore the UNESCO-listed ruins of Pompeii on a must-do day trip from Rome! Going at a steady pace, the hike includes a walk on the ridge of Italy’s famously feisty volcano, allowing incredible views down into the crater itself. After a pizza lunch, head to Pompeii to see the havoc that Mount Vesuvius reaped on it in AD 79. Tour the UNESCO-listed excavations, seeing fossils and well-preserved ruins while hearing the horrors that befell this intriguing ancient city.

Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from November 20 to March 31. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. We’ll take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city centre.

Pass By: City Wonders, Imlil Imlil, 00100 Rome Italy

Stop At: Pompeii Archaeological Park, Porta Marina (via Villa dei Misteri), 80045 Pompeii Italy

The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places, as the licensed guide paints a vivid picture of life in the city’s final days.

You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii as one of the site’s own officially licensed guides will show you around the city, painting a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.

In addition to the guided portion of your tour, you’ll have time for wandering and picture-taking in Pompeii – followed by an authentic Neapolitan pizza lunch.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Vesuvius National Park, Via Palazzo del Principe, 80044 Ottaviano Italy

It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples.

In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.

This was a great experience. Our guide Roberto was funny and provided very interesting information about Rome, Naples, and Pompeii. Also, we had a guide in Pompeii named Enrico. He was excellent and made the experience entertained. As an improvement, I would add a dessert in lunch and more time in Naples.

Ann and Enrico, our tour guides, were great. They were very informative and very accommodating. We met at 7:30 AM and rode in a chartered bus for about an hour. We made a short stop at a café to get coffee and use the bathroom. Then we rode for about another hour and a half. My teens got to sleep and rest before we arrived at Pompeii. We toured Pompeii for 2 and a half hours. Afterwards, we at delicious pizza at a restaurant. We then took a quick walking tour of Naples and got to go on our own for 45 minutes in the city. We took another bathroom stop at the same café before getting back to Rome. The tour was great! We are so glad we took it. Definitely a must do if you go to Rome.

We had Anna as our tour guide. She was very passionate about the tour and was always willing to explain everything. This tour was amazing and definitely worth doing if you are going to Rome. We also stopped for lunch and had pizza and wine which was nice and then went to Naples for a 45 min visit which was great to see also. Would recommend this historic sight to see

What an amazing tour! Our guide, Robert, was wonderful! And Enzo, our guide at Pompeii was equally fantastic! It was incredible and so great to have a guide to see Pompeii so you could really understand what you were seeing. We had time to explore also. Robert did a wonderful time of outlining our trip for us and letting us know what to expect. He also ended our drive with some very helpful suggestions for how to get the best food and avoid tourist traps in Rome. Absolutely wonderful! Thanks you Robert and LOVE THE UMBRELLA :)

I was traveling alone and decided to take a day trip to Pompeii, a place on my bucket list since I was 10 years old. The guide, Robert - exceeded my expectations. Not only the knowledge and information about Pompeii, and the regions that we drove through, but much of Italian culture in general. I had a great time, and recommend this tour to everyone that wants a taste of Pompeii.

The tour exceeded all expectations and our guide Andrea made the experience totally enjoyable even though we did not get to go to Mount Vesuvius, due to the weather. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone

Our tour guide was Barbara, and she was amazing! Her English was exceptional, and is a real interactive storyteller. Barbara gave us a highlights tour as we meet Rome, then explained the day. We stopped half way (1.5 hours) to Naples in a town called Cassino for a bio break. We were hoping to hike up Mt. Veseuvis, but the park was closed due to weather. We later found out that the tour company reimbursed us for that portion of the trip. Instead of the hike, we were taken to Naples to tour the city and do some shopping. We got ear radios and took the bus to Pompeii (another 1.5 hours). Close to Pompeii, we stopped at a restaurant for our choice of margherita pitta, marinara pizza, or white ham and cheese pizza. Our tour guide in Pompeii was named Willie, who lived on the island of Sorrento, and he was pretty funny. We toured the ruins for about two hours. We saw plaster castings of a baby, a dog, an early teen, and a person crouching. Took a ton of photos! Willie was really great!! Got on the bus and headed back to Cassino for another bio break. They had wine tastings and samples of their local food, like pasta, sun dried tomatoes, chocolate , olive oils, cashew products, and others. Back on the bus for more lessons on food culture from Barbara. This was a really amazing tour!

Weather wasn't the best , but also not the worst. And because we have incredible tour guide(Jonathan B) I did enjoy despite some downsides(Mt Vesuvius was closed and in Naples archaeological museum Pompey exhibition was also closed). But Jonathans knowledge , humor and understanding and overall best guide I experience so far.Was keeping from feeling disappointment. There was Local tour guide in Pompey , wasn't bad but little bit uptight .Pompey itself ., just WOW I would still recommend the tour , But if you get with Jonathan ., you know for fact You in safe hands:))and defiantly learn something new .

The tour round Pompeii is unbelievable but then you go up Vesuvius and the views are stunning as you look down on Naples and the island of Capri with gases rising up behind you from the crater. The whole day was brilliant from start to finish.

Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history and culture of the people and the time. He walked at a nice pace and answered our many questions. Lunch very nice, it was hot and very tasty

This tour was well worth the cost. The visit to Pompeii was amazing and our tour guide Giacomo who was very knowledgeable about the ruins of Pompeii. I could have used at least another hour exploring this city. The lunch was a personal pizza with salad, drinks not included. I would have loved more of a lunch selection. The hike to the crater of Mt Vesuvius was a bit difficult but the view made the it worth it. Our tour guide did the hike with us and was encouraging when you were having a rough time getting to the top. I would do this tour again on my next visit to Rome!

Great bus, really comfortable with reclining leather seats, nice little side head rests and seat belts. Good stop for coffee on the way there and back. Sean was a great guide and there was just enough time at Vesuvius and Pompeii. Pizza at lunch was huge and lovely with nice salad and choice of wine, beer or soft drink. All in all great sightseeing and would absolutely recommend this trip.

Great tour ! Everything was organsied well, including the tour bus. A full day's excursion which started at Pompeii. Information was provided on route by our excellent guide Kylie, who also answered our questions. Lunch was provided, pizza and beer in my case, shame it wasn't Italian beer. We headed off to Vesuvius and completed the challenging walk to the top, you need to be reasonably fit and wear the appropriate footwear. All in all a great day which I won't forget.
