Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini, Via Vittorio Veneto 27, 00187 Rome Italy

Escape the noise and heat of Rome as you explore its cryptic past on the city’s longest running crypts and catacombs tour. Beat the heat with air-conditioned travel and Skip-the-Line access directly down into cool, shadowed spaces that hide layer upon layer of history.

First, you’ll visit the hallowed catacombs where, beneath their persecutors’ feet, early Christians practiced their forbidden faith. Almost 2,000 years ago, this secret network of tunnels doubled as a place of worship and burial ground. As you explore tombs carved out of solid rock, your guide – a local, expert English-speaker – will relate the fascinating history of this sacred spot.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Basilica of San Clemente, Via Labicana 95, 00184 Rome Italy

From here, the coach will whisk you within sight of the Colosseum, to the Basilica of San Clemente. To descend below this structure is to move backwards through time. You’ll travel through the remains of 12th and 4th century basilicas, a 2nd century cult temple and ruins dating as far back as AD 64, when Emperor Nero watched the city burn. Incredibly, the ruins include an aqueduct that still works, after lying buried for centuries.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Catacombe di Santa Domitilla, Via delle Sette Chiese 282, 00147 Rome Italy

Visit

Duration: 5 minutes

Stop At: Museum and Crypt of Capuchins, Via Vittorio Veneto 27, 00187 Rome Italy

Your final destination is the Capuchin Crypt. Capuchin monks used the bones of nearly 4,000 of their brothers to decorate this somber space in intricate floor-to-ceiling designs, lending it the macabre nickname of ‘the Bone Chapel’. Your guide will tell you the theories, but it’s up to you to draw your own conclusions about the meaning of the crypt’s robed skeletons and vertebrae chandeliers.

Open your eyes to the city’s hidden side – and you’ll never see Rome the same way again.

The tour was well organized from start to finish. Sean was our guide and we shared the transportation with another group. Their guide was Divan. It was nice that on the way to the catacimbs one gave commentary and on the way back, the other. My favorite part was the catacomb portion because of the history behind it. I chose this tour based on the fact that it is different than others plus I was with my daughter and she likes morose stuff. Personally, I think the crypts are gross and just plain weird that anyone would go out of their way to decorate a church with body parts of over 2,000 people but that’s my opinion. Our guide(s) was knowledgeable and fun. If you like this sort of stuff, this tour will not disappoint. Oh, my daughter says she saw a ghost at the end of our catacombs tour so maybe you’ll experience a paranormal siting too! Enjoy

This was the theme of the tour! Who would of known how much of Rome is built upon Rome! Our guide was passionate about his knowledge and it showed in his enthusiasm!

Monica was a great tour guide. Very knowledgable and funny. Enjoyed every minute of it. The catacombs were very interesting but scary. I can see how people could get lost in there.

Our guide Barbara was very informative and you can tell she is passionate about her job. I loved that we got to see both the Franciscan catacombs AND the Roman ones outside the city. Very eerie and disturbing but oddly beautiful. Wonderful tour!

our guides Swan and Igni were awesome, and the tour itself offered great opportunity to experience another, quite unfamiliar, side of Rome. would definitely recommend! note: the last venue of the tour is quite scary, borderline very disturbing, for kids and folks sensitive about body parts, skeletons etc, be advised.

Not your typical tour, but so interesting. You feel like you get to explore places your might not have otherwise known about. Our guide really fleshed (sorry for the pun) out the story of each place and gave insight into what life was like for people of different eras.

The Crypts and Catacombs tour is well worth the money spent. Our tour guide, Camilla (Cami) was a wealth of knowledge of the history of the Capuchin monks, both Pagan and Christian burial sites in the Catacombs, as well as many other aspects of the Franciscan order. The Capuchin Chapel is very interesting with the bone decor and the history related to it and them. We also went to a stunning church that looked very mundane from the outside, but showed the "lasagna" of Rome, down to a Roman road. Part of the tour is taken by bus, so don't be scared away by the idea that it's a walking tour.

Andrea made this tour, his knowledge of the sites we visited was excellent and he imparted that knowledge in a way that was easily understood, it was fascinating. I can highly recommend this tour.

The Crypts and Catacombs tour was just what we were looking for. It's a part of Roman history that is maybe not in the guide books and not as well known. Our guide, Camilla, was just terrific with lots of info and anecdotes. The tour worked out perfectly, since the day we took it was fairly rainy in Rome, but most of our time was spent inside. The bus transportation was wonderful; I'm not sure how we would have gotten to the museum outside the Aurelian walls without this tour. Highly recommended.

Sean did a wonderful tour. We stepped back into history from centuries ago--amazing! The bones are not for the faint of heart, but each of the sites was fascinating in a different way.

Serena and Andrea were an amazing team of historians who enthralled us with the descriptions and explanations of those deep down under religious and sacred grounds. Unfortunately for me, the amount of steps was overwhelming and I had to excuse myself at the Capuchin Crypt. Perhaps describing the amount of steps needed to climb in these exhibits would be helpful for those who have some back or knee issues. (my only criticism)

Divan ,our guide was passionate, knowledgeable and super friendly. This tour is outstanding. He gave such a great description of what we were looking at. This was my favorite tour with my favorite guide. Explanations he gave showed us a greater understanding of the catacombs. He clearly explained the history and artifacts.

Ente (not sure of spelling) our guide was excellent, informative and fun. Tour was well organised at the meeting spot and during the tour with buses etc. This was one of our highlights of Rome. Our teens enjoyed it too.

Anna Marie was a fabulous guide. she was interesting, entertaining, and full of history. We enjoyed her tremendously and her passion for the subject was great. The tour was full and made some great stops. The Bones rooms were fantastic. I would highly reccommend this tour for anyone.

Our guide was a history student with a terrific sense of humor. On the 80° day the Crypts were very cool which increased the experience of being deep underground. The tunnels seemed endless.

Our tour was excellent. We got to visit the less travelled but incredibly interesting sites of Rome. This tour included and air conditioned coach which took us from one location of Rome to another. This ride was welcome since we walked everywhere whist on our own in Rome. Our tour guide Devan was excent, funny and informative. It wasn't the type of tour that you felt that you were flooded with so much information that you tune out. Unique and relevant facts were peppered with jokes and sarcasm which made for better retention of knowledge and not feeling overwhelmed but more entertained. Well done Devan!

Our guide Lucca was excellent. The catacombs and the churches built on top of each other were fascinating. Group was about the right size. Transportation was excellent. Drop off point not so much.

Both Sean and Barbera were extremely knowledgeable on every aspect of this tour and even with young kids and the tour going for roughly 4 hours they kept them interested and made it a very educational and well worth it tour. Thanks again highly recommend

Sylvia was knowledgeable and engaged and this was one of the best tours we did in Rome. These are locations that are difficult to get to easily and quickly without a guide and she was great.
