Itinerary

Day 1

Moscow

29 December 2019. Welcome to your New Year's holiday in Russia! Upon arrival you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel for check-in. This evening at 6pm there will be an informative welcome meeting, followed by a group dinner where you can get to know your fellow travellers. Remainder of the evening at leisure - your tour guide can recommend some local bars for you to try out.
Overnight: Moscow  |  Dinner

Day 2

Red Square & the Kremlin

First thing this morning we will hop on the Moscow Metro and make our way to legendary Red Square for a walking tour. As the historical, political and social heart of Moscow, this famous square is home to some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Within the Red Square we will find the iconic domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, the imposing red brick walls of the Kremlin and the glitzy Neo-Russian facade of the GUM shopping mall. Lenin's Mausoleum is also in Red Square, housed within a red and black marble building. If open, we can enter the mausoleum free of charge and pay our respects to the grandfather of Communism whose embalmed body has lain in state here since his death.

This afternoon our sightseeing continues with a guided tour around the grounds of the mighty Kremlin. Highlights include the Assumption Cathedral, Ivan the Great Bell Tower and monumental Tsar Bell. The rest of the day is free to you to spend at leisure.

During our stay in Moscow there will also be the opportunity to join our optional Moscow by Night coach tour. All optional excursions are subject to availability; booked and payable locally.
Overnight: Moscow  |  Breakfast

Day 3

New Year's Eve

This morning there is the unique opportunity to join us for an optional tour of a formerly top secret Soviet Bunker.. The rest of the day is free for you to independently explore. Perhaps take a journey on the Stalinist-era Metro to view some of the gold gilded frescoes that adorn many of the stations, or go ice skating in Gorky Park.

This evening we head into the city to ring in the New Year among the crowds and offer an optional New Year's Eve dinner (book and pay locally). While Red Square is certainly one of the most popular places to count down to midnight, it can also get extremely busy making it often difficult to find a place. But fear not, there are plenty of other exciting activities happening around Moscow’ capital city, whether it’s watching the fireworks as they light up the night sky over Christ the Savior Cathedral from Patriarshy Bridge or dancing in the New Year in one of the city’s trendy bars or clubs.
Overnight: Moscow  |  Breakfast

Day 4

Free day in Moscow

Moscow - Pskov. Enjoy a free day to relax in Moscow, recover from your New Year's celebrations and do as you please. Later this evening, we will travel by overnight sleeper train to Pskov.
Overnight: Sleeper Train  |  Breakfast

Day 5

Pskov

Good morning, Pskov! Arriving into Pskov early this morning we'll have breakfast before a short drive takes us to the beautiful 14th century Pechory Monastery. We will explore the peaceful grounds of the monastery and if monastic law permits, head underground for a tour of the burial caves of this fascinating and still-working cloister.

After lunch we will enjoy some alpine fun*. Go ice-skating on a frozen lake, or perhaps try your hand at cross-country skiing - a more horizontal approach to the downhill ski. There's also the opportunity to defrost in a local banya - the Russian equivalent of a sauna (remember to pack your swimwear). After steaming up in the banya, the brave among you can run outside to cool down with a roll in the snow! Relax at the hotel in the evening and tuck into a warm dinner.

*Please note: If the weather is inclement, we may need to alter our itinerary.
Overnight: Pskov and Pechory  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6

Pechory Monastery

Pskov - St Petersburg. With the Estonian border just 30km away, Pskov has a rich history and has played host to a stream of Baltic invaders over 700 years. This morning a tour of Pskov takes in the attractive riverside kremlin, the cathedral and other sights. Early this afternoon we travel by train to St Petersburg.
Overnight: St Petersburg  |  Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7

St Petersburg city tour

This morning a driving tour will give us an introduction to the city of St Petersburg. We will make our way along the famed Nevsky Prospekt, past the museum and university districts and a few photo stops will be made along the way at places such as the magnificent St Isaac's Cathedral and The Bronze Horseman. Then we enjoy a guided tour of impressive Peter & Paul Fortress and the beautiful Peter & Paul Cathedral, which houses the tombs of the Romanov monarchs. We will also visit the exquisite Church on Spilled Blood.

After a hearty traditional lunch we take a guided tour of the Hermitage Museum in the Winter Palace - which houses one of the biggest and best art collections on earth.

During our time in St Petersburg there will be the chance to join optional excursions, such as a traditional Cossack Show, a night at the Russian Ballet or a visit to the Vodka Museum. All optional excursions are subject to availability; booked and payable locally.
Overnight: St Petersburg  |  Breakfast, Lunch

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and loved our tour guide. At times the tour did feel a bit rushed but of course there is never enough time to see and do everything. Our tour guide was very helpful and knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. We appreciated that she always laid out the plans for the day ahead of time so we knew what to expect. Would definitely recommend the tour to friends and family.

This was not my first trip to Russia but I booked it for the convenience of the New Year arrangements. Therefor, I went 'off-piste' a bit, contacted some a Russian friends and went exploring independently, particularly in a Moscow, a city I know and love. However, I certainly enjoyed many if the group excursions and had a great time at actual New Year. Our guide Daria was superlative - very knowledgeable, highly efficient and great fun. The group gelled well, largely thanks to her.
