Day 1 - Shanghai
Welcome to China! After your arrival, we will transfer you to your hotel in Shanghai. This vibrant city is a dynamic hub with over 15 million inhabitants and boasts the country's largest commercial port. Shanghai is a blend of modern innovation and international allure, making it a truly unique metropolis. Get ready to explore this cosmopolitan city as you settle in and prepare for the adventures ahead. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Shanghai
On the second day of our journey, we delve into Shanghai's vibrant atmosphere and its stunning contrasts of the old and new. Our exploration begins in Pudong, the city's bustling financial district, where the skyline is dominated by impressive skyscrapers, including the renowned Pearl Tower. From here, we embark on a scenic ferry ride across the Huangpu River, offering picturesque views of both historic landmarks and modern marvels. Strolling through the Old City, we visit the tranquil Yuyuan Garden, a splendid example of Ming Dynasty garden design. While here, we participate in a traditional tea ceremony, immersing ourselves in one aspect of China's rich cultural heritage. Our journey continues to Xintiandi, known for its lively atmosphere and chic boutiques and cafés, where you'll have a chance to experience Shanghai's contemporary flair. We break for an included lunch before delving into the artistic enclave of Tianzifang. This formerly residential area is now a labyrinth of quaint alleys brimming with craft shops and galleries.As the day draws to a close, we take a leisurely walk along The Bund, where the sight of colonial-era buildings evokes a bygone era of European influence in the city. The afternoon is yours to explore as you wish, with the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable night boat trip to see Shanghai by night.
Day 3 - Shanghai - Luoyang
On the third day, we'll transfer to the train station for a remarkable high-speed train journey departing at 07:17 a.m. In just over five hours, we will cover 1,000 km, offering glimpses of China's picturesque countryside on the way to Luoyang. Upon arrival, an included lunch will refresh us before we visit the legendary Longmen Buddhist Caves. This expansive complex stretches over a kilometre of rocky cliffs along the river and boasts more than 100,000 Buddha statues and carvings, marking it as one of China's most extraordinary archaeological locations. To fully appreciate its grandeur, we'll also enjoy a scenic boat ride on the river.Following our exploration of the caves, we'll set off for the ancient city of Luoyang. As we pass through the city’s impressive walls, we'll find ourselves immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of its illuminated streets, rich in traditional charm and bustling local life.
Day 4 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
In the early hours, we venture to the outskirts of Luoyang to visit the White Horse Buddhist Monastery, a revered centre of Buddhist learning that attracts scholars and practitioners from across the globe. This historic site offers a peaceful setting steeped in spiritual significance. Our journey then takes us to Sanmenxia, a city steeped in history where the powerful Yellow River runs. Here, we'll explore the Baolun Temple, renowned for its impressive tall pagoda, and wander through the Guo Museum. Regarded as one of the finest museums in China, it houses ancient funeral carriages from the former State of Guo, providing a fascinating insight into the region’s past. After enjoying lunch, we continue our journey eastwards, passing by the sacred Mount Hua, celebrated for its dramatic peaks and spiritual importance. By late afternoon, we will have reached Xian, marking the end of our day’s journey.
Day 5 - Xian
Today, we delve into the captivating city of Xian, famously known as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. Our morning begins with a visit to the world-renowned Terracotta Army, an extraordinary archaeological site where thousands of life-sized clay soldiers have stood guard for centuries, protecting the tomb of China's first emperor. We then return to Xian to explore the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a magnificent Buddhist monument that has weathered over a millennium of history.Continuing our exploration, we wander through the historic walled centre of the city. Here, we visit the vibrant Muslim Quarter, where the Great Mosque stands as a testament to the rich blend of cultures and religions that have shaped China over the ages. Our tour includes a visit to the Drum Tower, where we will be treated to a short performance of traditional Chinese music played on ancient instruments. After an engaging day of discovery, you have free time to explore the city at your own pace, allowing you to immerse yourself further in the unique atmosphere of Xian.
Day 6 - Xian - Dunhuang
Today, we journey to the city of Dunhuang, an oasis in the Gobi Desert, by taking a flight included in the itinerary. Famous for its strategic location along the ancient Silk Road, Dunhuang offers a unique blend of history and stunning desert landscapes. Upon arrival, you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. We will venture into the desert to experience the majestic Singing Sand Dunes, also known as Mingsha Shan, from the back of a camel. These towering dunes create a fascinating opportunity to explore the desert landscape. A highlight of our desert excursion will be reaching the Crescent Moon Spring, a striking, crescent-shaped lake nestled between the dunes. To make the journey easier, we will access this remarkable site via electric car. After this unforgettable adventure, we will return to Dunhuang for our overnight accommodation.
Day 7 - Dunhuang - Turpan
On day seven, we will embark on an excursion to the fascinating Mogao Caves, a series of intricate artworks carved into the mountainside, once home to up to 18 monasteries. This visit helps us delve into the artistic and spiritual heritage of this extraordinary site. Lunch will be provided. In the afternoon, experience the vibrant culture of the region with the local Youjian Dunhuang Show, offering a dynamic performance that captures the spirit of this unique locale. Later, we will transfer to the train station for our high-speed journey to Turpan, with the train departing at 5:12 p.m. and arriving at 8:45 p.m. Turpan, situated in the Turpan Depression over 500 metres below sea level, holds the distinction of being the lowest point in China. Accommodation will be arranged in Turpan for the night.
Day 8 - Turpan
Today, we'll delve into some of the most significant sites along the historic Silk Road. Our exploration will begin with a visit to the Ancient City of Gaochang and the Astana Tombs, offering a glimpse into the region's ancient past. Next, we'll explore the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, a fascinating complex of rock-carved caves that were once part of an ancient monastery. After a lunch break, we'll proceed to the Jiaohe Ruins, an extraordinary ancient adobe city renowned for its strategic importance along the Silk Road. Our day will conclude at the Flaming Mountains, where you'll witness the captivating red sandstone ridges formed by years of volcanic activity. We'll then return to Turpan, where we'll stay overnight.
Day 9 - Turpan - Urumqi
Our day begins in Turpan with an exterior visit to the Su Gong Ta Mosque, where you'll see the remarkable Emin Minaret, the tallest in China, dating back to the Qing dynasty. We then visit a local vineyard, followed by an exploration of the Karez irrigation system – a marvel of ancient engineering that once sustained this arid region. We depart by bus to the lively Daban District, where you can peruse its bustling bazaars. Lunch is included in our plans today.After lunch, we journey to Urumqi, where we will visit the stunning salt lake and explore one of the world's largest wind farms – a testament to modern innovation in energy production. We conclude our day in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Province, with a group accommodation arrangement.
Day 10 - Urumqi
Today, we venture to the breathtaking Tianchi Lake, also known as Heavenly Lake. Situated at an altitude of around two thousand metres, this stunning alpine lake is a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site, offering a serene escape with its crystal-clear waters and majestic mountain backdrop. Lunch is provided, allowing us to relax amidst the beautiful surroundings. Following our visit to the lake, we'll head back to Urumqi and explore the vibrant Grand Bazaar, a lively marketplace that captures the enduring spirit of the ancient Silk Road. This bustling hub is the perfect place to experience local culture and crafts. We'll conclude the day with an overnight stay in Urumqi.
Day 11 - Urumqi - Beijing
Following breakfast, we will proceed to the airport for our included flight to Beijing, the bustling capital of the People's Republic of China. Upon our arrival, we will ensure your transfer to the hotel. In the late afternoon, we will embark on our first exploration of this impressive city with a visit to Wangfujing Street. This vibrant pedestrian avenue is renowned for its lively atmosphere, filled with a variety of shops and dining options. Dinner will be included this evening, after which we'll return to the hotel to relax and prepare for the exciting explorations that await us in Beijing.
Day 12 - Beijing
An exciting day of discovery awaits as we explore the vibrant capital of China, Beijing. We will embark on a full-day tour, covering some of the city's most renowned streets and landmarks. Our adventure begins at the Grand Chinese Imperial Palace, famously known as the Forbidden City, a majestic architectural marvel that served as the residence of 24 emperors over nearly five centuries. We will also wander through Jingshan Park, where Coal Hill offers some of the best-preserved imperial gardens in Beijing. From its summit, if the weather permits, you can enjoy sweeping vistas of the Forbidden City.Our next stop is Tiananmen Square, one of the world's largest public squares and an ideal vantage point to admire the Great National Theatre, also recognised as the Beijing Opera House. A leisurely lunch will be included in our day. The afternoon unfolds with a visit to the Summer Palace, adored for its enchanting gardens and tranquil lakes, which once served as the luxurious retreat of the Qing Dynasty.Delving deeper into traditional Beijing life, we will take a tricycle ride through the historic Hutong neighbourhoods. This experience will offer a glimpse into the city's rich cultural heritage as we explore quaint shops and visit a Siheyuan, a classic courtyard house epitomising Beijing's architectural flair. After a full day of exploration, we return to the hotel for the night.Please note: Due to heritage protection practices and visitor safety regulations, access to the Forbidden City may be restricted, and we cannot guarantee a visit. Should this arise, we will instead explore the Confucius Temple and the Lama Temple, both significant in Chinese history and culture.
Day 13 - Beijing
Today, we embark on a journey to one of the world's most renowned landmarks—the Great Wall of China, specifically the Mutianyu section. This architectural wonder, spanning over two millennia, weaves through dramatic mountain scenery. We'll ascend and descend via cable car, providing us with breathtaking views of this iconic structure.On our return to Beijing, we'll explore the bustling 798 Art District, a former military factory repurposed into a vibrant centre for contemporary art, featuring galleries, studios, and creative spaces.Our adventure continues with a visit to the Temple of Heaven, one of China's largest sacred complexes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This remarkable site once hosted emperors praying for bountiful harvests.After a day of exploration, we'll relax with a rejuvenating foot massage and partake in a Tai Chi class, immersing ourselves in the harmony and balance of traditional Chinese culture.To conclude our day, we'll savour a lacquered duck dinner—a local culinary delight that promises to end our day in Beijing on a high note.
Day 14 - Beijing
Following breakfast, our adventure concludes, leaving you with a wealth of cherished memories from your time exploring China.
