As the last surviving Ancient Wonder of the World and Egypt's crowning glory, it is little surprise that the Pyramids top our list. The highlight of any visit to India, the Taj Mahal with its white marble exterior is one of the most impressive man-made structures found anywhere on Earth. Built by the Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his wife, it is also the most powerful monument to love the world has ever seen.

The Lost City of the Incas survived the colonisation of Peru by the Spanish, which virtually wiped out its people. In fact, it wasn't rediscovered until 1911, perched high in the mountains amongst the clouds. Now open to the public, there are no words to express the sense of wonder one feels when gazing on Machu Picchu for the first time.

Italy is one of Europe's most popular destinations. It has something for everyone, including world famous cuisine, stunning Renaissance architecture and an incredible history. Undeservedly left off the Seven Wonders of the World, Angkor Wat can take some solace from being included in our round up of bucket list attractions. This Khmer masterpiece is the main attraction in the ancient Angkor temple complex, and is one of the world's largest and most impressive religious buildings. Few experiences beat watching the sunrise over this iconic building.

Rounding out the Wonders of the World is Rio de Janeiro's most famous landmark. Known for its vibrant carnival, buzzing nightlife and sandy beaches, Rio is an incredible destination for intrepid travellers. And dominating the skyline at the summit of Corcovado Mountain, Christ the Redeemer is definitely one for the bucket list.

Zigzagging across China for mile after mile, the Great Wall was once a formidable defence, protecting the country from invaders. Although the common myth about being able to see it from space isn't true, walking along a section of this ancient structure is certainly an experience for the bucket list.
