Itinerary
Day 1 - Punta Arenas
We begin in Punta Arenas, the largest city in southern Patagonia. If you arrive early, you can explore museums, enjoy local restaurants and browse the shops – there is plenty to fill the time. By early afternoon, a Quark Expeditions representative meets us at the official starting hotel for a welcome dinner and a detailed briefing to prepare for embarkation. Please arrive at the hotel in Punta Arenas no later than 3pm today.
Day 2 - Punta Arenas - King George Island
A swift two hour flight from Punta Arenas brings us to King George Island in the South Shetland Islands. En route, with a bird’s eye view, we bid the Drake Passage a fond farewell. After exploring the area around Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva, the Chilean research base, and Bellingshausen, the Russian station, we transfer by Zodiac to the ship – the beginning of our Antarctic journey.
Days 3-6 - Antarctic Peninsula - South Shetland Islands
As we approach the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands, the first glimpses from the ship are unforgettable – sweeping ice, stark mountains and vast skies. The Captain and Expedition Team keep watch for whales and seabirds and alert us to sightings, while onboard experts share illuminating talks on geology, history and wildlife. We make daily excursions ashore and by Zodiac, always weather permitting. Stepping onto a beach dotted with penguins and seals brings us close to the region’s remarkable life. One day we may cruise among icebergs and look for whales at Pleneau Island – the next we might hike to a Chinstrap penguin rookery. From the thunder of a calving glacier at Petermann Island to the hush of an Antarctic night, each day offers fresh opportunities for exploration and photography.
Day 7 - King George Island - Punta Arenas
From King George Island we fly across the Drake Passage to Punta Arenas and transfer to our hotel for the night.
Day 8 - Punta Arenas
After breakfast, you can continue your own travels or make your way to Punta Arenas Airport for your homeward flight.
