Around 2,000 figures have been excavated since their chance discovery in 1974, with estimates suggesting there may be as many as 8,000 in total. This silent army offers a compelling glimpse into ancient China’s history. On the return journey, we will stop at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a well-preserved Buddhist pagoda built in 652 during the Tang Dynasty, notable as one of China’s oldest surviving structures of its kind. This garden was created as a private retreat by Wang Xianchen, a former government official, reflecting the simple life of a humble man. Next, we drive to the Lingering Garden, one of China’s four most famous classical gardens, renowned for its elegant Qing-style architecture and beautifully varied buildings. Following lunch at a local restaurant, we visit Panmen City Gate, constructed during the Wu Kingdom of the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC).
