Day 1 - Beijing
Welcome to Beijing, the vibrant capital of China! Upon your arrival, we'll ensure a smooth transfer to your hotel, allowing you to settle in comfortably. Later, as the evening draws near, we'll head to the bustling Wangfujing Street. Known for its lively ambience, this pedestrian avenue offers a myriad of shops and a variety of dining options, making it the perfect place to get your first taste of the city’s dynamic vibe. Enjoy an included dinner to cap off your introductory evening in Beijing before we return to the hotel. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Beijing
Today promises an unforgettable journey as we delve into the heart of Beijing, the bustling capital city of China. Our adventure begins with a full-day tour exploring the city's most prominent landmarks. We will visit the Great Chinese Imperial Palace, commonly referred to as the Forbidden City, a magnificent architectural marvel where 24 emperors once ruled over a span of nearly five centuries. This historic site offers a rare glimpse into China's imperial past.Following this, we will head to Jingshan Park, which is home to Coal Hill. This well-preserved imperial garden provides weather-dependent panoramic vistas of the Forbidden City—views that are truly spectacular. Our journey will then lead us to the iconic Tiananmen Square; a vast public space that ranks among the largest in the world, where you can admire the nearby Great National Theatre, also known as the Beijing Opera House.Lunch is on us. In the afternoon, we visit the Summer Palace, an exquisite imperial retreat during the Qing Dynasty, famous for its tranquil gardens and placid lakes. To round off our day, we'll experience the vibrant pulse of traditional Beijing life with a tricycle ride through the historic Hutong neighbourhoods. These narrow alleys reveal the city's cultural heart and architectural charm, where we will also explore traditional shops and visit a classic Siheyuan courtyard residence.Please note that due to heritage and safety regulations, access to the Forbidden City may be limited. If this is the case, we will visit the Confucius Temple and the Lama Temple instead, both significant cultural landmarks in Chinese history. After our explorations, we'll return to the hotel for an overnight stay, relaxed and enriched by the day's experiences.
Day 3 - Beijing - Shanghai
Today, we embark on an unforgettable journey to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, a marvellous engineering feat with over 2,000 years of history. We will ascend and descend via cable car—tickets are included—allowing us to fully appreciate the views. As we bid farewell to Beijing, we will savour a delightful lunch featuring the renowned Peking duck. Following our meal, we'll transfer to the train station to catch the high-speed train to Shanghai. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for check-in and an overnight stay, ready to explore more of what this vibrant city has to offer.
Day 4 - Shanghai
In Shanghai, our day begins by exploring its renowned sights. We start in Pudong, the city's bustling financial district across the Huangpu River, showcasing an impressive skyline featuring landmarks such as the Pearl Tower. Following this, we enjoy a scenic ferry ride across the river, offering captivating views of both the city's historic and modern landscapes.Our journey continues with a leisurely walk through the Old City, where we take time to visit the tranquil Yuyuan Garden. This stunning garden, dating back to the Ming Dynasty, is a masterful example of classical Chinese garden design. Here, we also partake in a traditional tea ceremony, immersing ourselves in China's rich cultural traditions.Next, we venture into Xintiandi, a vibrant area known for its chic boutiques and lively cafés, creating a lively atmosphere that's not to be missed. Lunch is included and provides an excellent opportunity to savour the local cuisine.In the afternoon, we explore Tianzifang, a district famous for its narrow, bustling alleyways filled with unique craft shops and contemporary art galleries. Our day concludes with a stroll along The Bund, a promenade famed for its grand colonial-era buildings that reflect the influence of European trade history in Shanghai. You will have free time in the afternoon. If you wish, consider a nighttime boat trip to see the illuminated skyline of Shanghai, offering a memorable experience.
Day 5 - Shanghai - Luoyang
Today, we embark on an early morning journey by high-speed train, departing at 7:17 a.m. and covering 1,000 kilometres in just over five hours. As we travel from Shanghai to Luoyang, you'll be treated to stunning views of the ever-changing landscapes and tranquil countryside. Upon arrival, we invite you to join us for lunch, ensuring you're nourished for the day's explorations.Our visit begins with the remarkable Longmen Buddhist Caves, an awe-inspiring archaeological site where more than 100,000 Buddha statues and carvings grace the rocky river cliffs. This extraordinary complex stretches over a kilometre and has been an emblem of Chinese culture and artistry for centuries. To enhance your experience, we'll enjoy a scenic boat ride along the river, offering a unique perspective on these magnificent carvings.Leaving the caves, we proceed to the ancient city of Luoyang, where you'll pass through the city's historic walls and enter vibrant streets teeming with activity. As evening descends, the city lights up, blending traditional charm with a lively local atmosphere. It's the perfect way to immerse yourself in the cultural tapestry of this historic city.
Day 6 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
On the sixth day, we begin our exploration just outside Luoyang at the renowned White Horse Buddhist Monastery. This historic centre, a beacon for scholars and practitioners worldwide, offers a serene glimpse into Buddhist learning and tradition. Our journey continues as we head to Sanmenxia, a city steeped in history. Here, we’ll take in the breathtaking views of the mighty Yellow River and visit Baolun Temple, famed for its striking tall pagoda. We will also explore the esteemed Guo Museum, one of China’s finest, where we'll observe the ancient funeral carriages of the former State of Guo, providing fascinating insights into the region's past. A delightful lunch will be included as we continue our eastward journey, passing by the sacred Mount Hua. This mountain, known for its dramatic peaks and spiritual significance, is considered one of China’s most revered locations. As evening approaches, we will reach Xian, where our events for the day conclude, providing you with a chance to relax and prepare for the upcoming adventures.
Day 7 - Xian
Welcome to Xian, a city steeped in history where the legendary Silk Road began. Our morning takes us to the remarkable Terracotta Army, a site where thousands of life-sized clay soldiers have stood in silent guard for centuries over the tomb of China's first emperor. We then return to the city to admire the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a graceful Buddhist edifice dating back over a thousand years. Our exploration continues in the city's historic walled centre, where we navigate through the bustling Muslim Quarter and pay a visit to the Great Mosque, a testament to the rich cultural and religious tapestry that has shaped China. Included in our tour is a visit to the Drum Tower, where we will be treated to a short performance of traditional Chinese music played on ancient instruments. Later, you will have the afternoon free to discover more of Xian at your own pace.
Day 8 - Xian - Dunhuang
On day eight, we will take a flight to Dunhuang, an oasis city in the Gobi Desert that was pivotal on the ancient Silk Road. Upon arrival, you will be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Our adventure today takes us into the desert, where you can enjoy a camel ride across the dramatic Singing Sand Dunes of Mingsha Shan. A highlight of our journey will be the Crescent Moon Spring, a picturesque, crescent-shaped lake at the dunes' base. We will use electric vehicles to access this remarkable site. After our desert excursion, we will return to Dunhuang for your overnight stay.
Day 9 - Dunhuang - Turpan
Today, we'll journey to the remarkable Mogao Caves, intricately carved into the mountain's side and once home to as many as 18 monasteries. After our exploration, lunch will be provided. In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture at the Youjian Dunhuang Show, which offers a lively performance that showcases regional traditions. Later, we'll transfer you to the station to board the high-speed train to Turpan, scheduled to depart at 5:12 p.m. and arrive at 8:45 p.m. Turpan is situated in the Turpan Depression, making it the lowest point in China at 500 metres below sea level. Upon arrival, you'll settle into your accommodation and prepare for the next leg of your adventure.
Day 10 - Turpan
Today, we'll immerse ourselves in the historic wonders of Turpan, exploring key sites that once thrived along the ancient Silk Road. Our first stop is the Ancient City of Gaochang, a significant archaeological site that offers a glimpse into the area's past glories. Following this, we'll visit the Astana Tombs, renowned for their well-preserved artefacts and vibrant murals. Our journey continues to the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves—a remarkable complex of rock-carved caves that served as a religious sanctuary for monks many centuries ago.Lunch is included, providing a chance to savour the local flavours amidst our explorations. Energised, we'll set off to the Jiaohe Ruins, once a bustling adobe city strategically positioned on the Silk Road. The ruins, perched dramatically above the desert floor, provide insight into ancient life and trade in Western China.We conclude our day with a visit to the Flaming Mountains. These striking red sandstone ridges, shaped over millennia by volcanic activity, are a natural wonder that will surely captivate us. As the day ends, we'll return to Turpan for an overnight stay, reflecting on the rich tapestry of history we've uncovered today.
Day 11 - Turpan - Urumqi
On the eleventh day of our tour, we will begin in Turpan with an exterior visit to the Su Gong Ta Mosque, renowned for the Emin Minaret, the tallest of its kind in China, crafted during the Qing dynasty. We then proceed to explore a local vineyard, offering insights into the region's viticulture. Following this, we will delve into the historic Karez irrigation system, among China's most remarkable engineering feats. Our journey by bus then takes us to Daban District, where we will wander through lively bazaars, immersing ourselves in the vibrant market culture. Lunch will be provided during the day.We continue our adventure towards Urumqi, where we will be captivated by the striking salt lake and awe-inspiring wind farms, recognized as one of the largest wind energy production sites globally. Our day concludes with accommodation in Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Province, offering a glimpse into this rich and diverse region.
Day 12 - Urumqi
We will journey to the Tianchi Lake scenic area, famously known as Heavenly Lake. This stunning alpine lake sits at an altitude of approximately two thousand metres and is celebrated as a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site for its breathtaking beauty. After a delightful lunch, we will head back to Urumqi and immerse ourselves in the historic atmosphere of the Grand Bazaar, which continues to echo the vibrant spirit of the Silk Road. We will conclude our day with an overnight stay in Urumqi.
Day 13 - Urumqi
Following breakfast, we'll arrange your transfer to the airport, marking the conclusion of our services. We trust that your journey has been enjoyable and leaves you with enduring memories.
