Itinerary
Day 1 - Mexico City
Arrive in Mexico City, where we’ll transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free – you can relax after your journey or take a short stroll nearby at your own pace. Our guide will get in touch in the late afternoon.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Mexico City
After breakfast, we set out from Mexico City to the Plaza of the Three Cultures – a landmark where pre-Hispanic, colonial and modern Mexico meet – before continuing about 40 km to Teotihuacan, with entrance included. Here we explore the Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, the Temple of Quetzalpapalotl and the Citadel, and we pause at a local artisan centre. On the way back to the city we visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of Latin America. After returning to the hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore at your own pace.
Day 3 - Mexico City - Tepoztlan - Cuernavaca - Taxco
After breakfast we leave Mexico City for the state of Morelos and Tepoztlán, a Pueblo Mágico set against a steep green hillside topped by a small pre-Hispanic pyramid. You’ll have free time to stroll the streets or browse the artisan market.We then continue to Cuernavaca – capital of Morelos and known as the City of Eternal Spring. Founded in pre-Hispanic times and later favoured by Aztec nobility and the colonial Spanish elite, it features the Palace of Hernán Cortés, the cathedral and tranquil gardens. You’ll have free time for lunch.Our journey ends in Taxco, Guerrero – one of Mexico’s most picturesque mountain towns, with colonial charm, cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and renowned silver craftsmanship. You’ll have time to explore before settling in for the night.
Day 4 - Taxco - Acapulco
After breakfast in Taxco, we travel through the mountains towards the capital of Guerrero, then continue to the Pacific coast to arrive in Acapulco – renowned for its beaches and coastal scenery. You’ll have free time to enjoy its popular beach, lined with restaurants where you can have lunch and swim. In the afternoon, we include entrance and a visit to the Fort of San Diego, a fortress dating from the 17th century built to protect the city from pirate attacks. After the visit, we transfer to the hotel and you’ll have the rest of the day free to relax.
Day 5 - Acapulco - Zihuatanejo
After breakfast, we continue along the Pacific coast for 230 km to Zihuatanejo, a relaxed seaside town of cobbled streets that began as a fishing village and has kept its character. On arrival, we include a short boat transfer – about 10 minutes – to Playa Las Gatas, which is accessible only by sea. Here you can swim, unwind and choose a beachfront restaurant for lunch. We then return by boat, settle you into your accommodation and leave the rest of the day free. Note: During peak season, accommodation in Zihuatanejo may be limited – in such cases we may depart in the late afternoon to stay in the city of Lázaro Cárdenas.
Day 6 - Zihuatanejo - Janitzio - Patzcuaro
Leaving Zihuatanejo, we watch the scenery shift from desert landscapes to the green mountains of Michoacán. Our first stop is Lake Pátzcuaro, where we board a boat for a 30–minute crossing to Janitzio, an island inhabited by the Purépecha community, known for preserving its traditions and distinctive butterfly–net fishing. You have time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, stroll the traditional streets and, if you wish, climb to the statue of José María Morelos. We then return by boat to Pátzcuaro, one of Mexico’s most beautiful colonial towns, noted for its pre–Hispanic roots, colonial architecture and artisan markets.
Day 7 - Patzcuaro - Morelia - Tlaquepaque - Guadalajara
We depart Pátzcuaro for Morelia, the capital of Michoacán – a UNESCO World Heritage city celebrated for its pink stone architecture and elegant historic centre. We point out the Cathedral, Plaza de Armas and the University of Morelia, founded in 1540. You then have free time to stroll the historic streets and enjoy lunch at your own pace.Continuing west, we stop in Tlaquepaque, a Pueblo Mágico known for mariachi, live performances, artisan workshops and regional cuisine. You can browse the craft shops or pause for a snack. We then continue to Guadalajara, capital of Jalisco and recognised as the birthplace of mariachi and tequila – arriving in the late afternoon.
Day 8 - Guadalajara
In the morning, we explore Guadalajara on a guided city tour, taking in its colonial historic centre, the cathedral, the market and Tapatía Square. We also enter Hospicio Cabañas – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After the visit, we continue to the town of Tequila, where we tour the Mundo Cuervo distillery to see how this famous Mexican drink is made – entrance and tasting included. You’ll then have time to stroll and have lunch in picturesque Tequila before we return to Guadalajara.
Day 9 - Guadalajara - Guanajuato
We travel from Guadalajara into the state of Guanajuato, arriving around midday. In the afternoon, we include a guided tour of Guanajuato – a beautiful university city and UNESCO World Heritage site – exploring its steep slopes, narrow lanes and historic churches. We also include a cable car ride up to El Pípila to enjoy panoramic views across the city.
Day 10 - Guanajuato - Dolores Hidalgo - San Miguel de Allende - Queretaro
We’ll travel through the mountains to Dolores Hidalgo – the birthplace of Mexican independence. We continue to the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – access to the interior may be restricted during retreats. We then explore San Miguel de Allende – a World Heritage city known for its colonial architecture and cobbled streets – where you’ll have time to stroll. Later, we arrive in Queretaro, noted for its magnificent colonial centre, Plaza de Armas and lively restaurants and pedestrian streets.
Day 11 - Queretaro - Tula - Puebla
From Querétaro we depart for Tula, where we include entrance and a visit to the archaeological site – the former Toltec capital. We’ll see the famed Atlantes, imposing warrior statues standing around four metres tall, along with pyramids, palaces and carved columns that reflect the sophistication of Toltec civilisation. We then continue to Puebla for a panoramic tour of this historic city – renowned for its cuisine, colonial architecture and Talavera pottery – taking in its magnificent Renaissance style cathedral and lively Zócalo. Overnight in Puebla.
Day 12 - Puebla - Oaxaca
We travel into the state of Oaxaca through mountain landscapes, arriving in Oaxaca by late morning. We include a guided visit to this UNESCO World Heritage city – originally founded by the Aztecs and renowned for its remarkable historical heritage. Afterwards, we head up to Monte Albán, set on a mountaintop about 400 metres above the Oaxaca Valley – entrance and guided tour included – the most magnificent of the Zapotec cities. We return to Oaxaca, where you have free time to continue exploring at your own pace.
Day 13 - Oaxaca - Mexico City
We’ll transfer you from Oaxaca to the airport for your included flight to Mexico City – estimated arrival around 3:00 pm. On arrival, our services conclude – we hope you leave with wonderful memories.
