You’ll explore Taxila’s ancient ruins, cruise the Karakoram Highway and trek to Fairy Meadows for Nanga Parbat views. Expect to see alpine passes like Babusar and Shandur, turquoise lakes at Lalusar, Satpara and Katchura, and the sweeping Deosai Plains. You’ll visit Skardu and the Shigar Valley – with forts and mosques steeped in Balti heritage – then continue to Hunza for Passu Glacier viewpoints and Hussaini Suspension Bridge. Itinerary
Day 1 - Islamabad
On arrival in Islamabad we’re met at the airport and transferred to our hotel. After time to freshen up, we head out this afternoon to explore the capital – visiting Faisal Mosque, the Pakistan Monument and the Heritage Museum – and begin to immerse ourselves in the country’s culture and history.
Day 2 - Islamabad - Naran
We leave Islamabad for the hills, watching the lesser Himalaya rise along the valley. At Jaulian Monastery we wander through ancient cells and meditation spaces, then continue through historic Taxila to Sirkup to walk the streets of this city from the Kushan period. The road then threads up the Kaghan Valley to Naran beside the Kunhar River, with forests and clear streams for company. In Naran Bazaar you can browse stalls and sample local snacks before we settle in for the night.
Day 3 - Naran - Babusar Pass - Lalusar Lake - Raikot Bridge - Tato Village - Fairy Meadows
We ascend the twisting road to Babusar Pass for sweeping Himalayan views, then drop to tranquil Lalusar Lake for fresh alpine air and photos. Continuing north on the Karakoram Highway, we reach Raikot Bridge and switch to jeeps for the narrow track to Tato Village. From here we hike 2–3 hours up to Fairy Meadows on a steady trail with one short steep push – rewarded by magnificent views of Nanga Parbat.
Day 4 - Fairy Meadows
We trek 2–3 hours through scented forest to Beyal Camp for grandstand views of Nanga Parbat, then return to Fairy Meadows. Back at camp you can unwind, take gentle strolls or focus on photography and wildlife in the peaceful surroundings.
Day 5 - Fairy Meadows - Tato Village - Tarashing
We descend on foot to Tato Village, savouring the changing alpine vistas, then drive through the forested Astore Valley to Tarashing along narrow scenic roads and remote hamlets. On arrival you have free time to explore the village, meet locals and watch everyday mountain life.
Day 6 - Tarashing - Rupal Valley - Herrligkoffer Base Camp - Tarashing
We ride by jeep into the Rupal Valley and set off on foot past small settlements and glacier edges to Herrligkoffer Base Camp, pausing for striking views of Nanga Parbat’s southern wall. We return by jeep to Tarashing, where you can wander the lanes, chat with residents and take in unhurried village life.
Day 7 - Skardu
We cross into the Deosai Plains, where high meadows open into vast alpine plateaus rich in wildlife, and take in wide views. We pause at turquoise Satpara Lake and visit the ancient Manthal Buddha carved in granite before continuing to Skardu, ringed by dramatic peaks.
Day 8 - Skardu
We follow the Shigar Valley past riverbanks and orchards, calling at historic sites and learning about Balti heritage. We visit Amborik Mosque to appreciate its architecture and significance, then explore restored Shigar Fort amid fruit groves. Later we hike up to Khorpocho Fort above Skardu for panoramic views across the valley.
Day 9 - Skardu - Gilgit
We trace the Indus past rugged cliffs to the Katchura Lakes and enjoy the calm waters set beneath soaring peaks. The journey then continues along the Karakoram Highway to Gilgit, where we visit the old British cemetery and the lively bazaar to deepen our sense of the region’s past and present.
Day 10 - Gilgit - Hunza Valley - Borith Lake - Passu
We drive into the Hunza Valley, peaks towering above the road, and at Borith Lake we walk to the Passu Glacier viewpoint for superb mountain panoramas before returning to Passu. Back in the village you can relax, savour the scenery and enjoy the warm local welcome.
Day 11 - Gulmit - Karimabad - Passu
We follow the Hunza River towards Karimabad, passing Gulmit’s terraces and the dramatic rock spires that define the valley. We stop at the photogenic Hussaini Suspension Bridge – you can, if you wish, step cautiously onto part of the swaying walkway for a taste of its thrill.
Day 12 - Karimabad - Gupis
We turn south and west into the Hindu Kush towards Gupis, a road of river gorges and terraced fields. On arrival we unwind, gaze down the valley towards Phander Lake and experience everyday village life in this remote corner.
Day 13 - Gupis - Mastuj
We travel through alpine meadows and turquoise rivers to Shandur Pass, home to the world’s highest polo ground, and pause for sweeping views of surrounding peaks and high pastures. From the pass we descend to quiet Mastuj between bright rivers and snowy mountains. The evening is peaceful – you can soak up the views and the village calm.
Day 14 - Mastuj - Chitral
We follow an old trade route from Mastuj to Chitral through long travelled valleys. In town we explore the streets and bustling bazaar, browsing caps, cloth and stones beneath the imposing presence of Tirich Mir.
Day 15 - Chitral - Garam Chashma
We drive from Chitral into the Garam Chashma valley along streams and farmland to the hot sulphur springs, watching pilgrims and locals at the pools. We return to Chitral through fine valley scenery, and on arrival you have free time to relax or explore at your own pace in this historic mountain town.
Day 16 - Chitral - Rumbur Valley
We travel into the remote Rumbur Valley, homeland of the Kalash. In the village we visit traditional houses, see distinctive dress and gain insight into daily life, beliefs and customs in this secluded community.
Day 17 - Rumbur - Nuristani Village - Rumbur - Bumburet Valley - Bumburet Village
We set out on foot from Rumbur along village paths to a nearby Nuristani settlement, enjoying close views of valley life and landscapes, then walk back to Rumbur. Later we drive to the neighbouring Bumburet Valley to see more of Kalash daily life, explore traditional wooden houses and terraces, and visit the Kalash Museum to learn about local history, clothing, artefacts and rituals.
Day 18 - Chitral
We return by road to Chitral and continue up to Birmoghlasht, visiting the former Summer Palace and enjoying cooler air and grand views over the valley. A short hill walk reveals panoramic lookout points before lunch with wide mountain vistas. We then descend to Chitral to visit an old mosque and appreciate its traditional architecture before returning to the hotel.
Day 19 - Chitral - Islamabad
We fly from Chitral to Islamabad – conditions permitting – savouring sweeping mountain views from the air as we return to the capital.
Day 20 - Islamabad - Taxila - Rawalpindi
We drive to Taxila for one of South Asia’s key archaeological landscapes, visiting the museum to see Gandharan sculpture and artefacts. We then walk the quiet ruins of Jaulian Monastery to imagine monastic life before continuing to nearby Rawalpindi to settle into our hotel. You can delve into the vibrant Raja Bazaar – famed for gold and silver – and watch traditional craftsmanship at work. Later we explore Islamabad once more, taking in Faisal Mosque, the Pakistan Monument and the Heritage Museum to round off our cultural journey in the capital.
Day 21 - Islamabad
You have free time in Islamabad before departure – relax at the hotel or explore at your own pace. When it is time to go, we transfer you to the airport to check in for your onward or homeward flight. The tour concludes here in Islamabad – a fond farewell to the country’s mountains, valleys and cultural sites.
