Set out from Lima for eight days of Andean adventure, returning to Lima at the end. After a hop to Cusco, you’ll road trip via Abancay to Cachora, where the Choquequirao trek begins. Expect sweeping views of Salkantay and Humantay, the Apurimac Canyon and river, plus visits to Tarawasi and the enigmatic Sayhuite monolith. You’ll hike via Capuliyoc and Marampampa through cloud forest and high prairies, camp beneath starry skies, and spend unhurried time exploring the magnificent Choquequirao terraces and temples. It’s a rewarding, moderately challenging route with big altitude gains – finishing back in Cusco before your flight to Lima.

Day 1 - Welcome to Lima

Welcome to Lima, Peru’s capital on the Pacific coast. We’ll meet you on arrival, provide assistance as needed, and transfer you to your hotel.
Day 2 - Travel to Cusco

We transfer you to the airport for your flight to Cusco. On arrival, we meet you, provide assistance and transfer you to your hotel – a smooth, simple start to your time in the city.
Please note: The flight from Lima to Cusco is not included in the cost of your tour and must be booked independently.
Day 3 - Travel from Cusco to Apurimac Canyon

We depart Cusco and drive north towards Abancay, crossing the Antapampa high plains with views of the snow covered Salkantay and Humantay. As we descend towards Limatambo, Pitusiray, Chicon and Verónica come into view, and we visit the Tarawasi archaeological site. We continue to the Apurimac River to cross its narrow gorge, then pass Curawasi to see the Sayhuite monolith – believed to represent the Inca Empire. A parallel track leads us to the village of Cachora, the start of today’s walk. Carrying our daypacks, we follow the edge of Capuliyoc for our first look at the Apurimac canyon and the route ahead, then begin a steady descent to camp by the river at 2,450 m.
Today covers about 8 km – roughly 4–5 hours on the trail – with a maximum altitude of 2,900 m. Highlights include the Sayhuite monolith and expansive views of the Apurimac canyon.
Day 4 - Trek to Choquequirao

We cross the pedestrian bridge over the river and begin a steady climb for roughly half a day to Marampampa, a small meadow where we stop for lunch. The morning ascent is steep, with wide views of the canyon, its vegetation and the surrounding slopes. In the afternoon the gradient eases as we approach the valley that holds the Choquequirao complex. We camp on a flat site, ready to explore the Inca remains and the surrounding cloud forest tomorrow.
Distance: 7 km / 4.35 mi. Walking time: 7–8 hrs. Maximum altitude: 3,400 m / 11,154 ft. Highlights inlcude the landscapes of the Apurimac canyon.
Day 5 - Choquequirao Exploration

We spend the morning exploring the central sector of the Choquequirao Archaeological Complex, visiting nearby hillside constructions with views over the canyon as we continue towards the terraces. After lunch we descend to Marampampa to camp for the night.
Walking distance is about 2.5 km – roughly 2 hours – with a maximum altitude of 3,400 m (11,154 ft).
Day 6 - Return Toward Cachora
We begin our descent to the river and stop for lunch at the deepest part of the canyon. We then continue uphill towards Cachora, reaching our campsite at Cocamasana, a small site with wide views over the Apurimac Canyon.
We cover about 6 km/3.73 mi in approximately 6–7 hours, with a maximum altitude of 2,900 m/9,514 ft.
Day 7 - Return to Cusco

We finish the trek with a final uphill section to Capuliyoc, then follow a relatively flat track to Cachora. Our vehicle meets us here for the 4‑hour drive back to Cusco, retracing the route taken at the start of the trip – expect to arrive in the evening.
Walking distance is 4 km/2.49 miles – around 3–4 hours – with a maximum altitude of 2,900 m/9,514 ft.
Day 8 - Goodbye Peru

We’ll provide a transfer to Cusco airport for your flight to Lima. On arrival, you connect with your international flight home.
