Itinerary
Day 1 - Puerto Maldonado
Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado airport, you will be greeted by hotel staff and transferred to the river port. From there, we take a 45-minute boat journey along the Madre de Dios River, travelling through the heart of the jungle to reach the lodge. After checking in, enjoy lunch before setting out on an afternoon walk along the lodge’s trail system to discover the diverse vegetation, insects and birdlife nearby. We will explain the significance of the local ecosystem before boarding a boat to cruise the river at sunset, spotting nocturnal creatures such as alligators, nightjars, capybaras and owls. In the evening, while you relax with a welcome cocktail over dinner, the lodge guides will present an introduction to the area’s natural environment. Overnight at Reserva Amazónica.
Day 2 - Puerto Maldonado
We start early with breakfast to make the most of the cooler morning hours. Afterwards, we head to Lake Sandoval within the Tambopata National Reserve. Here, we glide across the oxbow-shaped lake in a wooden canoe, surrounded by rich vegetation and abundant wildlife. This area is a sanctuary for numerous bird species, aquatic life, and endangered animals such as giant river otters, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, and side-neck turtles. At midday, we return to the lodge for lunch. Later in the afternoon, we visit the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center, where we spend around ninety minutes walking among seven suspension bridges perched 45 metres above the forest floor. This unique vantage point offers opportunities to spot various trees, orchids, toucans, woodpeckers, and potentially birds of prey, sloths, and different monkey species. We finish the day with dinner at the lodge, accompanied by an informative presentation about the Amazon.
Day 3 - Puerto Maldonado
After breakfast at the lodge, we take a 25-minute boat ride to Quebrada Gamitana, where we embark on a 90-minute walk along the rainforest trails beside the winding, dark-water creek. This habitat is home to piranhas, caimans, turtles and a variety of brightly coloured birds. From Sanigpanga, we board a canoe and paddle downstream for an hour, observing the rich plant and animal life along the banks. Returning to the lodge for lunch, we then visit Hacienda Concepción in the afternoon. Here, we explore a remarkable botanical garden featuring over 200 species of rainforest plants and learn about their traditional uses, including native medicinal applications. We follow this with a canoe ride around a small lake, watching for wildlife such as turtles, nightjars and exotic herons. The day concludes with a two-hour night walk along the trails of the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve, before returning to the lodge for dinner.
Day 4 - Puerto Maldonado
After breakfast at the lodge, we take a 45-minute boat ride across the Madre de Dios River to Puerto Maldonado. From there, you will catch your flight to your next destination.
