Belize City - Cayo District. On arrival in Belize City, make your own way to your hotel in the Cayo District.

After breakfast, you visit the renowned Maya site of Xunantunich, set on the banks of the Mopan River. The name Xunantunich means ‘stone woman’ in Maya. This important ceremonial centre thrived during the late Classic Period, between AD 300 and 900, and features large plazas surrounded by temples and palaces.

The most prominent structure is El Castillo, a 130-foot pyramid and one of the tallest in Belize, decorated with an impressive stucco frieze that once encircled the temple. Following a private guided tour of the site, you have time to explore the nearby town of San Ignacio before returning to the hotel.

After breakfast, travel through the scenic Mountain Pine Ridge area before heading off-road to the Barton Creek Cave system. En route, you pass through a traditional Mennonite community where horse-drawn transport remains part of everyday life. On arrival, begin a half-day canoe expedition into Barton Creek Cave, once used by the ancient Maya as a ceremonial and burial site.

Equipped with paddles and powerful lights, you glide along the creek and into the dark, winding cave system, often described as part of the Maya underworld. Stalactites hang overhead as we drift through vast chambers filled with striking calcite formations. Your knowledgeable guides explain the cultural and archaeological importance of this 7.5-kilometre limestone cave.

Today is free to enjoy the Cayo District at your own pace. Surrounded by rivers, forests and rolling hills, you may choose to relax or independently explore the dramatic landscapes and natural attractions of the region.

Cayo District - Belize City - San Pedro. After breakfast, you travel towards Belize City, stopping en route at the Community Baboon Sanctuary, located around 35 miles northwest of the city. The sanctuary protects approximately 20 square miles of forest along the Belize River and is home to the black howler monkey, locally known as the baboon or saraguate.

During a short walk through the jungle, you may see and hear these monkeys, famous for their deep calls used to mark territory. After the visit, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to Belize City airport for your included flight to San Pedro. On arrival, transfer to the hotel.

Head out to explore the marine life of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. This protected area, whose name means ‘Little Channel’ in Maya, is known for its shallow coral gardens and clear waters. You explore the natural cut through the reef, where depths range from 1 to 9 metres, and encounter a variety of marine life among stag horn corals and sea fans.

At nearby Shark Ray Alley, you can observe nurse sharks and southern stingrays gliding through the water, making this one of Belize’s most memorable snorkelling and diving experiences.

Enjoy a full day at leisure in San Pedro. You may wish to explore the colourful streets, browse local shops for souvenirs, or simply soak up the relaxed Caribbean atmosphere at your own pace.
