Itinerary
Day 1 - Livingstone - Lusaka
We depart Livingstone early for Lusaka, watching the scenery shift past bustling markets, small villages and broad rural landscapes. We reach Eureka Camp near the city in time for a satisfying meal, then gather for a tour briefing to set us up for the days ahead.
Day 2 - Lusaka - Petauke - Luangwa Market
We follow the Great East Road towards Petauke, passing farmland and dispersed settlements that reveal everyday rural rhythms. We pause at lively Luangwa Market, where you can browse stalls piled with fresh produce, pick up snacks and curios, and soak up the energy of local traders at work.
Day 3 - Petauke - Mulberry Mongoose
We continue from Petauke into the South Luangwa region, travelling via Chipata and quiet communities to the park’s fringes. We visit the Mulberry Mongoose workshop to see how artisans transform snare wire and natural materials into distinctive handmade pieces that support conservation and local livelihoods.
Day 4 - South Luangwa National Park
We head out on an afternoon and sunset game drive in South Luangwa National Park – one of Africa’s standout wildlife sanctuaries. As dusk deepens, we search for nocturnal species while the sounds of the bush rise around us.
Day 5 - Lake Malawi Shoreline - Lake Malawi
We leave South Luangwa and travel east, crossing from Zambia into Malawi before continuing to the shores of Lake Malawi. We settle into our lakeside lodge, where you can unwind and take in sweeping views across the water.
Day 6 - Lake Malawi
We visit a nearby village to meet residents and gain a genuine insight into life by the lake, learning about traditions, farming, fishing and local crafts. Afterwards, you can spend the rest of the day at Lake Malawi – swim in clear waters, relax on the beach, join optional activities or simply unwind by the shore.
Day 7 - Central Lake Malawi - North Lake Malawi
We journey north along the lakeshore from central to northern Lake Malawi, tracing the water’s edge past villages, fields and quiet bays. Near Chitimba we join our tour leader for a guided village walk, meeting local people, visiting traditional homes and admiring lake and hillside views as the day draws to a close.
Day 8 - Mbeya Region
We bid farewell to the lake and cross into Tanzania, continuing to the Mbeya region. We arrive at Utengule Coffee Lodge in the highlands and settle in.
Day 9 - Iringa
We travel up the Great Rift Valley across southern Tanzania towards Iringa, passing small towns and rolling countryside before reaching the escarpment above the Ruaha River Valley. En route we visit a local coffee plantation to see how coffee is grown, harvested and processed, and we sample a freshly brewed cup.
Day 10 - Iringa - Mikumi
We depart Iringa for Mikumi, driving through miombo woodland and across open plains that border the park’s wildlife areas – a scenic approach to the adventures ahead.
Day 11 - Mikumi
We keep the day flexible around Mikumi so you can choose to book extra game drives or cultural visits, balancing more wildlife viewing with time to learn about nearby communities.
Day 12 - Mikumi - Dar es Salaam
We continue south east from Mikumi to Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast, passing roadside settlements and farmland before arriving in Tanzania’s largest city.
Day 13 - Dar es Salaam - Zanzibar
We take the ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar, arriving on the historic Spice Island. On landing, we transfer to our hotel in Stone Town and settle into the old quarter.
Day 14 - Stone Town - Zanzibar Bay
We join a guided Spice Tour, exploring Stone Town’s narrow streets and lively markets before visiting working farms to see how spices are grown and enjoying a local lunch. Later we travel by road across the island to the beach near Marumbi, arriving at Zanzibar Bay for two nights by the sea.
Day 15 - Zanzibar
You have a full free day at Zanzibar Bay – relax on the beach, swim, snorkel, dive, take a boat trip or simply unwind beneath the palms.
Day 16 - Zanzibar - Dar es Salaam - Bagamoyo
We return by ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, watching the island recede across the channel. Back on the mainland, we rejoin our truck and drive north along the coast to Bagamoyo – a historic town – and settle into our lodge.
Day 17 - Bagamoyo - Arusha
We travel inland from Bagamoyo through rural Tanzania towards Arusha, passing scattered villages and farmland as we approach the region famed for the northern parks.
Day 18 - Arusha - Karatu
We depart Arusha for Karatu on the edge of the Ngorongoro Highlands, taking in expansive views of rolling hills and rural landscapes as we gain altitude.
Day 19 - Ngorongoro Crater - Seronera
We spend the morning on safari across the Ngorongoro Crater floor, where wildlife is abundant – we keep an eye out for zebra, wildebeest, elephants, lions and, with luck, the rare black rhino. After our crater game drive, we continue by 4x4 across the highlands into Serengeti National Park and travel on to the Seronera region, where our private tented camp sits among open plains.
Day 20 - Serengeti - Seronera - Karatu
We enjoy game viewing in the Serengeti as we travel, then exit the park and drive back towards Karatu across the highlands. We arrive later in the day and you can relax and reflect on your safari experiences.
Day 21 - Karatu - Arusha
We leave Karatu and return to Arusha, taking in final views of northern Tanzania’s highlands and scattered villages as we come back to the city.
Day 22 - Arusha
We travel from Arusha across the border into Kenya and continue to Nairobi through Maasai country and lively roadside towns. We end the Gorillas & Plains Tour in the afternoon – say farewell to your fellow travellers, then you can prepare for onward arrangements or choose to add an extra night in the city.
