Skye & the Highland Steam Adventure

We leave Inverness and trace the mysterious shores of Loch Ness, keeping watch for Nessie as we pause at the evocative ruins of Urquhart Castle for sweeping views of the water.

We head south through dramatic glens to the historic Commando Memorial and admire Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, from afar. We continue to Fort William to board the Jacobite Steam Train for a scenic ride of around two hours with spectacular views of the Highlands and Scotland’s west coast. After what is said to be the greatest rail journey in the world, we arrive in Mallaig where you can enjoy fresh seafood for lunch.

We ferry across to the Isle of Skye, travel through the marvellous Cuillin Mountains, and arrive in Portree for the night. Upgrades to first class on the steam train are not available – standard class tickets are issued to all.

A day of tales, myths, and iconic scenery awaits as we begin at the enchanting Fairy Pools, a series of natural waterfalls with crystal clear water on the River Brittle. We hear stories of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s escape while driving to the lively village of Dunvegan for lunch, where you can indulge in local delights.

We take a fabulous walk through the Quiraing, continue to the cascading Kilt Rock and the breathtaking viewpoint of the Old Man of Storr, then return to Portree where you have free time to explore the colourful harbour and village.

We bid farewell to the Isle of Skye and make for romantic Eilean Donan Castle, reputedly the most photographed in Scotland. We continue south west through stunning scenery and pause in the picturesque village of Beauly for lunch, where you can choose a favourite spot.

With our energy restored, we visit a Highland whisky distillery to warm our bellies with Scotland’s favourite national drink and learn how uisge beatha is made. We explore the grounds of Culloden Battlefield and hear tales of the last battle fought on British soil, then visit the standing stones of Clava Cairns – made famous by the TV series Outlander. Crossing back into the capital of the Highlands, we arrive in Inverness in the early evening.

We cannot hold the bus or refund for late arrivals, and return times are approximate and subject to road and weather conditions – please allow at least 3 hours after the scheduled return time for any onward travel.
