Rome marks the start for nearly every classic Italy tour. Ancient monuments include the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. Vatican City houses St Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. The Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona fill the historic centre.
Florence sits midway between Rome and Venice on the classic route. The city centre contains Brunelleschi's Duomo and Giotto's Bell Tower. It features the Palazzo Vecchio and the Basilica of Santa Croce. Guided walking tours cover the Renaissance district. Tuscany excursions include wine tasting in Montepulciano. They feature visits to the medieval squares of Siena and San Gimignano. Most trips pause in Florence for one or two nights before continuing north.
The classic route from Rome to Venice concludes at the canal city, typically after stops in Bologna or Verona. St Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs anchor guided walking tours, with a glass of prosecco included at most stops. Boat tours cruise the Grand Canal and Giudecca Canal, passing churches and palaces. Some itineraries include excursions to the glassblowing island of Murano and the lace-making island of Burano.
Extended trips continue from Rome to Naples and the southern coast. The route passes through Pompeii's ruins before reaching Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi. Guided tours explore the ancient baths, basilica and preserved villas of Pompeii. Boat excursions circle Capri with stops at the Blue Grotto when weather permits. The coastal drive along the clifftop road between Sorrento and Positano covers 18 km. Photo stops overlook the Mediterranean.
Northern routes through the Italian Alps and Dolomites start in Milan or Venice. The Bernina Express crosses alpine passes from St Moritz to Tirano, passing villages and tunnels with panoramic views. Lake Como, Lake Garda and the mountain resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo feature on 8- and 9-day itineraries. Milan city tours cover Teatro alla Scala, the Duomo and Castello Sforzesco, while Bellagio's cobbled streets and lakeside villas offer quieter exploration.
Shorter trips cover Rome, Florence and Venice in 4 to 8 days. Grand tours extend south through Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast or Sicily over 10 to 17 days. The table sets every classic Italy tour side by side for easy comparison.
