Scenic routes via Fort William, Loch Lomond and Glasgow lead to the ferry for Belfast – before Dublin’s lively buzz. Itinerary
Day 1 - Edinburgh
We arrive in Scotland and transfer to our hotel – you have time to settle in. You’ll find details of the tour start on the noticeboard at reception.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Edinburgh
After breakfast, we set out with a local guide on a panoramic tour of Edinburgh, taking in the UNESCO listed historic centre dominated by the castle, its steep closes and elegant parks – you have free time afterwards.
Day 3 - Edinburgh - The Kelpies - Stirling - Pitlochry - Culloden - Inverness
We leave Edinburgh to photograph The Kelpies – striking horse head sculptures rooted in Scottish folklore – then continue to Stirling for an included visit to its mighty castle. We travel north via Pitlochry, where you have time for lunch and a stroll, and pause at Culloden, site of a decisive battle with profound consequences for Scotland. We reach Inverness in the evening – you can enjoy a riverside walk if you wish. Note: Depending on season and daylight, the stop at Culloden may take place on Monday.
Day 4 - Inverness
A day of Highland drama as we cross forests, lochs, remote moors and sea inlets. We visit Eilean Donan Castle – beautifully set by the water – with admission included, continue to Fort Augustus to see the canal locks with time for lunch, then head to Loch Ness for an included boat trip. We also visit the medieval ruins of Urquhart Castle – admission included – before returning to Inverness for an included visit and tasting at a traditional whisky distillery. We stay in Inverness. Note: Distillery timings may vary and may be late Sunday or Monday.
Day 5 - Inverness - Fort William - Inveraray - Loch Lomond - Glasgow
We continue through superb scenery, stopping at Spean Bridge to see a Second World War memorial, then in Fort William beneath Ben Nevis. We pass atmospheric Kilchurn Castle and arrive in Inveraray for lunch and a wander. Our route follows the shores of Loch Lomond as we make for Glasgow, arriving in the evening – you can explore the lively city centre.
Day 6 - Glasgow - Belfast - Dublin
We leave Glasgow for Cairnryan to board the ferry to Northern Ireland, arriving in Belfast, the capital now flourishing after past divisions. We continue into the Republic of Ireland, reaching Dublin by day’s end.
Day 7 - Dublin
In the morning we take a panoramic tour of Dublin – we follow the River Liffey, pass graceful parks and the historic university area, and take in the lively centre with an exterior view of Trinity College. The afternoon is free for you to explore. Note: Depending on arrival time and daylight, the tour may run the previous afternoon.
Day 8 - Dublin - Powerscourt - Kilkenny - Cashel - Cork
We depart for nearby Powerscourt to visit its magnificent gardens dating from the 18th century – admission included – with fountains, Japanese Gardens and a pet cemetery. We continue to Kilkenny, where you have time for lunch and a stroll, then go south to visit the Rock of Cashel – admission included. We arrive in Cork in the evening – you can enjoy a walk in the centre. Dinner is included.
Day 9 - Cork - Kinsale - Killarney - Limerick
We travel to Kinsale, stopping at Charles Fort for sweeping ocean views beside this stronghold dating from the 17th century. You have time to explore Kinsale’s colourful centre before we continue to Killarney, where you have time for lunch and a stroll. We then take an included jaunting car ride through the National Park to Ross Castle, followed by a short cruise on the lake. After a brief stop in Adare, we arrive in Limerick by mid afternoon – you can explore the centre, visit the castle or stroll by the river. Dinner is included.
Day 10 - Limerick - Cliffs of Moher - Galway
Today we visit Bunratty Folk Park – tickets included – to discover traditional Irish life and its medieval castle. We continue to Caherconnell, where the Poulnabrone Dolmen is located and we may be lucky enough to see sheepdogs at work, then on to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher – admission included – where you may choose to walk to O’Brien’s Tower. We traverse the stark beauty of the Burren and arrive in Galway.
Day 11 - Galway - Clonmacnoise - Dublin
We set off for Cong, a picturesque village in a lake district, to visit the ruins of the Royal Abbey and stroll around the grounds of Ashford Castle. We then continue to Clonmacnoise for an included guided visit to the Celtic monastic site – the visit may be shorter than usual due to renovation work. Afterwards, we stop in Athlone for lunch and a stroll before reaching Dublin in the evening.
Day 12 - Dublin
After breakfast our journey concludes – we bid farewell with wonderful memories.
