Day 1 - Istanbul
As you arrive in the vibrant city of Istanbul, we'll ensure you have a seamless start to your journey by arranging a transfer from the airport to your hotel. Once settled, you'll have some leisure time to explore the surroundings at your own pace, perhaps venturing into the lively streets or simply relaxing and getting acquainted with this enchanting city that bridges Europe and Asia. Later in the afternoon, check the hotel reception boards for essential information regarding the commencement of your tour. Prepare for an exciting adventure ahead as you immerse yourself in Turkey's rich cultural tapestry. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Istanbul
On your second day in Istanbul, we will embark on an intriguing exploration of this vibrant city. Our journey begins with a visit to the majestic Süleymaniye Mosque, the largest mosque in Istanbul, showcasing stunning Ottoman architecture. We will then traverse the city's ancient walls and cruise along the scenic Golden Horn, a natural harbour that has been a critical mercantile centre throughout history. Following this, we will wander through the busy fishing district, absorbing the local atmosphere, and appreciate the grandeur of Hagia Sophia’s exterior—a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. Our exploration continues with a visit to Topkapi Palace, where you can immerse yourself in the history of the Ottoman Empire by exploring its splendid courtyards and pavilions.In the afternoon, you will have the freedom to further discover this fascinating city that straddles two continents. As the evening approaches, we will arrange transport to Taksim, a bustling commercial hub. Here, you can enjoy dining at a selection of restaurants and perhaps catch a glimpse of the charming old tram gliding through the streets. Alternatively, you might choose to visit the nearby Galata Tower for panoramic views of the city.
Day 3 - Istanbul
Today, we will embark on a two-hour boat trip along the Bosphorus, included exclusively for our group. As we navigate the strait that divides Istanbul's European and Asian sides, you will witness the vibrant activity of this vital waterway, bustling with numerous boats. We'll cruise under the iconic bridges that connect the two continents and admire the stunning Ottoman architecture, including the Sultan's palaces and traditional wooden homes that line the water's edge. After soaking in these maritime views, we will return to central Istanbul, where you will have some free time to explore.
Day 4 - Istanbul - Ephesus - Kusadasi
We begin our day with an early departure from Istanbul as we continue our adventure through Turkey. Around midday, we arrive at Ephesus, renowned as the best-preserved ancient city in Asia Minor. Once home to 250,000 inhabitants two millennia ago, this city offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Included in our itinerary are visits to the Basilica of St. John, the House of the Virgin Mary, and the archaeological site, where you can absorb the rich history permeating every corner.After our exploration of Ephesus, we journey onwards to Kusadasi, a vibrant coastal town celebrated for its lively atmosphere, bustling commercial life, and charming castle. Here, we will spend the night, enjoying included dinner.Please note that during the high season from May to October, accommodation may be provided in Aydin instead of Kusadasi. In this case, following our Ephesus exploration, we'll make a stop in Kusadasi from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A panoramic city tour will be included before we proceed to Aydin for the night.
Day 5 - Kusadasi - Bodrum - Marmaris
Leaving early in the morning, we set off to discover one of Turkey’s natural wonders, Lake Bafa. Take a moment to appreciate its tranquil beauty before we continue our journey to Bodrum, a captivating city with robust Greek origins. Here, you can choose to explore the impressive Bodrum Castle, meander through its lively and tourist-friendly streets, or visit the bustling marina. After lunch, we head to Marmaris, a scenic coastal destination celebrated for its charming castle, vibrant pier, and decorative fountains. We’ve included dinner at this location. Please be aware that during the summer months, our accommodation may occasionally be in Mugla, a nearby town, instead of Marmaris.
Day 6 - Marmaris - Rhodes
On the sixth day, we will depart early in the morning for Greece, embarking on an express ferry to the enchanting island of Rhodes. The ferry ride takes approximately one hour, during which we'll complete standard border-crossing processes. Upon arrival, we'll delve into the remarkable history and architecture that the walled city and historic quarter of Rhodes have to offer. This unique blend of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Knight of St. John, Ottoman, and Italian influences creates a rich cultural tapestry to explore. The afternoon is yours to wander and discover this fascinating locale at your own pace. Please note that the ferry service between Rhodes and Marmaris is subject to frequent scheduling changes and typically operates only during the summer months. Therefore, adjustments to this itinerary segment may be necessary.
Day 7 - Rhodes - Heraklion
Today, we will embark on an excursion exploring the enchanting island of Rhodes. Our first stop is Filerimos, situated atop a scenic hill where you can visit its monastery set amid magnificent surroundings. We will then journey to Lindos to discover its fortress and Acropolis, which offer captivating views of the Aegean Sea. You have the opportunity to wander through Lindos' charming, whitewashed streets, unwind on a beach, or even opt for a traditional donkey ride up to the Acropolis. After lunch, we'll return to Rhodes city, leaving you with some free time before we head to the airport for a flight to Crete. Upon arrival in Heraklion, we'll transfer you to your hotel. Please note that direct flights between Rhodes and Crete are not frequent, and may sometimes include a stopover in Athens or occur on a different day, such as Friday morning.
Day 8 - Heraklion
On the morning of day eight, we embark on a picturesque journey along Crete's western coast. Our first stop is Rethymno, a charming seaside city known for its Venetian origins and a medieval castle that stands as a testament to its historical significance. Strolling through Rethymno, you'll have the chance to appreciate the town's rich architectural heritage. We then continue to Chania, a city that has been shaped by a vibrant blend of cultures throughout history, including Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Genoese, Turks, Egyptians, and Greeks. Chania's impressive fortress and stately mansions offer a glance into its diverse past. As the day draws to a close, we'll return to Heraklion, completing a day filled with exploration and captivating landscapes.
Day 9 - Heraklion
We begin our day with a trip to the illustrious Palace of Knossos, where we'll explore the remnants of Minoan civilisation—one of the earliest in Europe. Our guided tour offers fascinating insights into the legends and history surrounding this ancient site. After immersing ourselves in the grandeur of Knossos, we journey through Crete's rugged mountains, heading south to the picturesque coastal town of Agia Galini. Known for its charming fishing port and vibrant taverns, Agia Galini invites you to unwind over lunch or perhaps dip your toes into the inviting waters of the Libyan Sea. As the day draws to a close, we'll return to Heraklion, enjoying the scenic vistas along our way. Please note that from November to April, when Agia Galini’s attractions are less accessible, we'll stop at Matala instead. Famed for its striking cliffside caves and beautiful beach, Matala offers its own unique allure.
Day 10 - Heraklion
Today, we journey east along Crete's coast, starting with a visit to the quaint village of Kritsa. Here, we'll explore Panagia Kera, a 13th-century church adorned with stunning frescoes (admission is covered). Our next stop is the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos, famed for its natural harbour, where you'll have time to stroll and enjoy lunch surrounded by lovely views. The afternoon takes us to Elounda, a former city-state now a charming tourist spot, where we’ll board a boat to Spinalonga Island. On the island, we’ll explore the Venetian Fortress, which served various historic roles, including a period as a leper colony. After our exploration, we’ll return by boat and make our way back to Heraklion for the night.
Day 11 - Heraklion - Santorini
We begin our day bright and early, heading to the port for a high-speed ferry journey to the enchanting island of Santorini, arriving between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. Once on the island, we board a bus to Oia, often hailed as the prettiest town in Santorini, renowned for its striking whitewashed buildings, breathtaking views from the cliffs, and iconic castle ruins and windmills. There will be ample time for you to wander through its charming streets and savour lunch at your leisure. Following our visit to Oia, we make our way to Fira, the island's vibrant capital. Here, we suggest taking the opportunity to embark on a boat trip to the hot springs, where you can relax and unwind, and cap off your day by witnessing the renowned Santorini sunset from a traditional Mediterranean boat.
Day 12 - Santorini - Mykonos
Following breakfast, we'll catch a ferry to the vibrant island of Mykonos. Upon arrival, we'll arrange your transfer to the hotel. Legend has it that this island was the site of a monumental battle between Zeus and the Titans. You’ll have the remainder of the day to explore at your leisure, strolling through the charming narrow streets, stopping by the picturesque Little Venice, and admiring the iconic windmills that overlook the town.
Day 13 - Mykonos
Following a leisurely breakfast, today is yours to experience Mykonos at your own pace. We suggest a visit to Delos, renowned as the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis and one of the most sacred sites in Ancient Greece. Alternatively, indulge in a day of relaxation on the island's famed beaches, such as Paradise Beach and Super Paradise Beach, known for their inviting sands and vibrant atmosphere. Whether you choose to delve into history or unwind by the sea, Mykonos offers a perfect setting for an unforgettable day.
Day 14 - Mykonos - Athens
Following breakfast, we will organise your transfer to the port, where you’ll board the ferry bound for Athens. Sit back and relax as you voyage across the Aegean Sea, arriving at the Port of Piraeus later in the evening, around 11:00 p.m. This leisurely journey offers you a final opportunity to reflect on the splendours of Mykonos before the dynamic cityscape of Athens welcomes you. As you disembark, take in the sight of Greece's historic capital, setting the stage for the next chapter of your adventure.
Day 15 - Athens - Tripoli - Olympia - Patras
We embark on a journey to the Peloponnese, pausing briefly to admire the Corinth Canal – a late 19th-century engineering marvel. Our path continues through the scenic mountains until we reach Tripoli, the vibrant capital of the Arcadia region. Here, we take a break to explore Aeros Square, renowned for its bustling cafes and restaurants. Our adventure then leads us to Olympia, a site of great historical significance where we will visit the Archaeological Site with the guidance of a knowledgeable local expert (entry included). Olympia is celebrated as the birthplace of the Olympic Games, which first took place in 776 B.C., drawing athletes from across Greece and its colonies. Noteworthy highlights here include the Temple of Zeus, the Stadium, the Gymnasium, and the Arena. We then proceed to Patras, Greece’s third-largest city, famed for its imposing medieval fortress and the country's largest cathedral. Adjacent to the cathedral is the small church of St. Andrew, a revered pilgrimage destination. Dinner will be included to round off the day.
Day 16 - Patras - Nafpaktos - Mycenae - Corinth - Athens
After breakfast, we will cross the impressive Rio-Antirrio Bridge, a remarkable feat of engineering linking the Peloponnese with the Greek mainland. Our first destination is Nafpaktos, nestled on the Gulf of Corinth. This town is steeped in history, once known as Lepanto, where a pivotal naval battle took place between Christian and Turkish forces—the same battle where the legendary Cervantes lost his arm. You will have time to explore its charming harbour and the captivating old town at your own pace. We continue along the scenic Gulf of Corinth to reach Mycenae, an ancient citadel renowned as a cornerstone of European civilization, dating back to the 18th century BC. Here, you will have free time to enjoy lunch and explore the archaeological site, with admission included. Our journey proceeds to the magnificent Fortress of Acrocorinth, where you'll find the remains of a temple dedicated to Aphrodite. A brief stop at the Corinth Canal—a marvel of late 19th-century engineering—follows, before our evening arrival in Athens.
Day 17 - Athens
Today, you have the entire day free to explore the captivating city of Athens at your own pace. Delve into its rich history, vibrant culture, and captivating landmarks. Whether you're wandering through ancient ruins, exploring bustling neighbourhoods, or enjoying local cuisine, Athens offers a wealth of experiences to make this day truly memorable.
Day 18 - Athens
Following breakfast, our journey draws to a close, leaving you with treasured memories and inspiring experiences from your travels. Safe onward journey!
