Itinerary
Day 1 - Paris - Blois - Tours - Villandry - Amboise
We travel south from Paris into the Loire Valley, pause in Blois to admire its château, and continue to Tours for a gentle stroll and lunch at your own pace. In the afternoon we visit the superb Château de Villandry – garden tickets included – before reaching Amboise, where the medieval quarter lines the Loire. Dinner is included.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Amboise - Chenonceaux - Chambord - Limoges
We spend the morning in Amboise and you have time to stroll near the Château du Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final three years. We then visit the iconic Château de Chenonceau – tickets included – before continuing to Chambord, the valley’s largest château – park access included. We travel on to Limoges, renowned for porcelain, where you might like to wander the historic centre and see Saint Etienne Cathedral.
Day 3 - Limoges - Sarlat - Beynac-et-Cazenac - Rocamadour
We leave Limoges for the Dordogne’s beautiful river landscapes, visiting Lascaux’s museum and replica caves – tickets included – to learn about extraordinary prehistoric art. We continue to Sarlat for free time and lunch, then call at Beynac to explore its clifftop castle – admission included. We end the day in Rocamadour, a dramatic cliffside village with an important sanctuary; you might like to walk the Via Crucis and take the lift back up. Dinner is included.
Day 4 - Rocamadour - Padirac Cave - Collonges-la-Rouge - Saint-Emilion - Bordeaux
We descend into the impressive Padirac Chasm for a boat ride on an underground river 75 metres below the surface, then continue to Collonges la Rouge, a picturesque red stone village on the Way of Saint James. After lunch we travel to Saint Emilion, where you have time for a gentle stroll, reaching Bordeaux in the evening. Note: Padirac Chasm may be closed from November until the end of March due to weather conditions.
Day 5 - Bordeaux - Lourdes
We explore the World Heritage centre of Bordeaux, admire the Water Mirror and wander the old streets and 11th century cathedral. You then have free time to stroll the Garonne quays for lunch or, if you wish, visit the Cité du Vin, an impressive interactive museum on the history and culture of wine. We continue to the Pyrenees, arriving in Lourdes by mid afternoon with time to visit the sanctuary – you might like to attend the candlelit procession. Dinner is included.
Day 6 - Lourdes - Carcassonne - Foix - Andorra
We travel across southern France to Carcassonne, where you have free time to explore the spectacular walled cité and have lunch. We continue towards the Pyrenees with a brief stop in Foix, known for its hilltop château, then cross into Andorra, pausing at Sant Joan de Caselles before reaching Andorra la Vella. You have free time to enjoy the lively shopping streets or visit Caldea, Europe’s largest thermal spa. Dinner is included.
Day 7 - Andorra - Montserrat - Barcelona
You have free time in Andorra this morning for shopping or a walk. After lunch we continue into Catalonia to Montserrat and take the rack railway up – ticket included – to enjoy superb views. You then have time to explore the sanctuary – entrance not included – before we continue to Barcelona, arriving in the late afternoon.
Day 8 - Barcelona
In the morning we take a panoramic tour of Barcelona, open to the Mediterranean and famed for Gaudí’s modernist masterpieces, its lively Ramblas and the legacy of its World Expositions and Olympic Games. The tour ends at Maremagnum beside Columbus Square, where you can enjoy a stroll by the sea. The afternoon is at leisure, with a return to the hotel at the end of the day.
Day 9 - Barcelona - Peniscola - Valencia - Madrid
We follow the Mediterranean south, stopping in Peniscola – a charming walled town by the sea – for a stroll, then continue to Valencia, arriving around lunchtime. Will you try the famous paella? At about 16:30 we continue to Madrid, with a brief stop to view Valencia’s striking City of Arts and Sciences, arriving between 20:30 and 21:00. To welcome you to the capital we include a transfer to Plaza Mayor, a favourite place to enjoy pinchos or a glass of wine. Note: depending on the number of passengers, the journey from Valencia to Madrid may be by high speed train.
Day 10 - Madrid
We begin with a comprehensive tour of central Madrid, taking in Paseo del Prado, Cibeles, Neptuno, Puerta de Alcalá, Plaza de Colón and Plaza Mayor, then visit Retiro Park to see the lake and the Crystal Palace. Admission is included to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid – widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest football clubs. You have the rest of the afternoon at leisure, with an evening return transfer to the hotel.
Day 11 - Madrid
After breakfast our journey concludes – time to depart with wonderful memories.
