In the morning we’ll take a three hours guided exploration of the Eternal City, combining a stroll through Imperial Rome with a panoramic coach tour to admire one of the great capitals of Western civilisation. We’ll pass the Arch of Constantine, the exterior of the Colosseum and the Imperial Forums, the Circus Maximus, the Baths of Caracalla, the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the Pyramid of Cestius and Castel Sant’Angelo. The tour ends at Vatican City around 11:00 – afterwards you can join an optional visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Late in the day we’ll include a transfer to lively Trastevere, famed for its cosy restaurants and atmosphere, with return to the hotel around 8:30 p.m.
Day 3 - Rome - Florence
Today we leave Rome and travel north through beautiful landscapes to Florence. We’ll go straight to Piazzale Michelangelo for sweeping views of the city, then walk towards the historic centre where, after time for lunch, we’ll enjoy a guided walking tour with a local expert, taking in the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria – an open air museum in its own right. Afterwards you’ll have free time to explore, and in the evening you can choose from many places for dinner, from local to international.
Day 4 - Florence - Venice
We cross the Apennines, enjoying striking mountain scenery, and on arrival in Venice we’ll take a boat across the Giudecca Canal to the historic island. With a local guide we’ll visit magnificent St Mark’s Square, then tour a Murano glass factory to see traditional techniques in action. You’ll have free time to explore before we settle into our accommodation in the Mestre district.
Day 5 - Venice - Innsbruck - Zurich
We depart Venice for Austria and, on reaching Innsbruck, you’ll have time to wander the historic centre and have lunch. We then continue through the Tyrolean landscapes into Switzerland, arriving in Zurich.
Day 6 - Zurich - Lucerne - Zurich
Today brings superb alpine scenery of high peaks and pristine lakes as we travel through the Interlaken region. Our first stop is Grindelwald, with time for a coffee before we take the cable car up the mountain. At the top we’ll follow a winding path to a suspended bridge – those feeling adventurous can cross for spectacular glacier views. Lunch on the mountain is included, after which we descend and continue to Lucerne, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities, where you’ll have time to explore. We then return to Zurich. Note: the guide may offer an optional full day excursion starting in the morning – after some free time in Lucerne you can take a rotating cable car to the summit of Mount Titlis, at over 3,000 metres, for breathtaking views of the glacier and the Alps.
