Trek over the Tiz N`Aaadi

Marrakech - Foussarou. This morning we bid farewell to Marrakech and drive into the foothills of the Atlas Mountains to Oukaimeden, which is Morocco's most popular ski resort. Here we'll stop for a picnic lunch, admire the mountain views and meet our trek team. Then we begin our trek, setting off on a steady ascent to the top of the first pass, the Tiz N'Aaadi (2980m.). We stop to enjoy the views before trek downhill to our camp at Foussarou (2500m) which faces the Berber village of Tacheddirt. Tonight after we'll enjoy dinner before settling down for our first exciting night under canvas!

Day 3

Cross the Tizi-n-Likemt

Foussarou - Tizi-n-Ourai. After breakfast we begin our ascent (3 - 4 hrs) to the summit of the Tizi-n-Likemt Pass (3550m), passing multi coloured hillsides and rocky peaks en route, with the lush green valley below. It's a challenging trek to the top of pass but it's worth it for the wonderful panoramic views. After a break for photos we descend south to the grazing area of Azib Likemt (2550m), where we have lunch and can cool off our weary feet in the stream. After lunch we continue hiking through a narrow and rocky valley and camp on a high meadow beneath the Tizi-n-Ourai (3109m).
Overnight: Tizi-n-Ourai (camping)  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

Lake Ifni in the Central Atlas

Tizi-n-Ourai - Lake Ifni. We begin the day with a short hike up to the Tizi-n-Ourai Pass where we can see the summit of Mount Toubkal, Morocco's highest mountain. We trek through several small villages down to the valley floor where we stop for lunch. This afternoon we climb steadily through a picturesque valley to reach Lake Ifni, after traversing high above the north side of the lake. We set up camp at the western end of Lake Ifni which is the biggest lake in the central part of the Atlas.
Overnight: Lake Ifni (camping)  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5

Trek to Toubkal Basecamp

Lake Ifni - Toubkal Basecamp. Today we hike up to Toubkal Basecamp, climbing above the lake and following the upper valley of the Assif a Moursaine and on to the Tizi-n-Ouanoums, one of the most spectacular pass crossings in the Atlas. At an altitude of 3650m, this spectacular rocky pass is located between the two highest peaks in the Atlas - Toubkal and Ouanoukrim. From the top of the pass we hike down into the upper part of the valley of the Mizan River and arrive at the Neltner Refuge, aka Toubkal Basecamp. The refuge is always a hive of activity with trekkers using it as a base before they set off to the summit of Toubkal. We set up camp here and prepare for tomorrow's hike to the summit.
Overnight: Toubkal Basecamp (camping)  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6

Toubkal Summit Day

Toubkal Basecamp - Ait Souka. Today we climb to the summit of Mt Toubkal (4167m), North Africa's highest peak! After an early breakfast, we set off on a steep ascent, winding our way eastwards, above basecamp across rugged paths and boulders. Next we pass between two peaks to reach a high basin and continue upwards to reach a ridge-line where the views are superb. After we climbed for 3 to 4 hours, we reach the summit of Toubkal! There will be plenty of time to take those all important summit photos and enjoy the breathtaking views of the High Atlas peaks, with the Anti Atlas to the north-east and the Sahara visible to the south.

The descent to the hut takes approximately 2 hrs, and we arrive just in time for lunch. In the afternoon we walk back down to our overnight accommodation in the village Ait Souka where we stay in a welcoming gite.
Overnight: Ait Souka  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7

Drive to Marrakech

Ait Souka - Marrakech. It's just a short walk down to Imlil this morning, where we meet our transport and drive back to Marrakech. This afternoon we'll enjoy a brief sightseeing tour of the city with a local guide. Early this evening we will check out Djemaa-el-Fna, the legendary main square full of acrobats, snake charmers, juice sellers and various al fresco restaurants. We have our final dinner tonight in a local restaurant to round off our Moroccan adventure.
Overnight: Marrakech  |  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8

Arrangements end after breakfast today and there is a complimentary transfer to the airport.

Is This Holiday For You?

The maximum altitude attained on this trek is not very high and we spend only one night at just above 3000m, however in order to complete the circuit there are long days with a good deal of ascent and descent. During the summer months the daily temperatures can be high and although this can have an effect on trekking performance, we do run this holiday when there is the maximum chance of summitting Toubkal. Generally we follow well-established trails between valleys and villages, whilst during the ascent of Toubkal, and when heading over passes, we'll follow zig-zag trails on scree and occasional patches of snow. This is one of our most challenging trekking holidays in Morocco, therefore you should be comfortable with walking for up to 8 or 9 hours each day and for several days continuously. The optional ascent of Toubkal presents no technical difficulty and should be within the capabilities of fit walkers.
