Colombo is a lively city, blending modern skyscrapers with historic colonial districts near the port. We explore the renowned Pettah bazaar, visit the Gangarama Buddhist temple and the Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil, and take in some of the city’s residential areas. If you wish, you can wander through Cinnamon Gardens, home to notable landmarks such as the Prime Minister’s Office, Independence Hall, Colombo Town Hall, and the National Museum, as well as elegant residences. Overnight in Colombo.
Day 2 - Colombo - Dambulla - Sigiriya
After breakfast, we set off to explore Sri Lanka’s remarkable wildlife and heritage. Our first stop is the Golden Temple of Dambulla, a sacred pilgrimage site with a history spanning over 2,000 years. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is carved deep within a mountain and features a complex of five caves adorned with ancient paintings depicting the Buddha, deities, and Sri Lankan kings. After our visit, we continue to your hotel in Sigiriya, where you can relax and enjoy a restful evening. Overnight in Sigiriya.
Day 3 - Sigiriya - Polonnaruwa - Sigiriya
After breakfast, we set out to climb the fifth-century Sigiriya fortress, perched nearly 200 metres above the surrounding rainforest. Built by King Kashyapa, this remarkable citadel—known as Lion Rock—was once the heart of a fortified city. We ascend through the lion’s ‘belly’ and up the spiral staircase that winds around the rock, reaching the summit for sweeping views across the landscape. In the afternoon, we explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Here, we view the large artificial lake that supports an intricate network of irrigation canals, and visit the remains of the royal palace, temples, and administrative buildings. Highlights include the Gal Viharaya with its four impressive rock-carved Buddha statues, the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath, and the statue of King Parakramabahu. We also see the Shiva Temple, Lankathilake, Watadage, and Galpotha before returning to the hotel for the evening. Overnight in Sigiriya.
Day 4 - Sigiriya - Matale - Peradeniya - Kandy
After breakfast, we travel to Matale to explore the region’s renowned spice and herb gardens. Here, we learn about Sri Lanka’s prized spices – including turmeric, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, and lemongrass – and discover their traditional uses and therapeutic properties over a cup of herbal tea. We then continue to Kandy and visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens. Established during the British colonial era, these gardens are home to an impressive collection of orchids, spice plants, and exotic trees, including one planted by King George and Queen Mary in 1901. In the evening, we check in at your selected hotel in Kandy, ready for the next stage of your journey. Overnight in Kandy.
Day 5 - Kandy
Today we explore Kandy, renowned for its scenic lakeside setting surrounded by hills. We visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a significant Buddhist site built in the 16th century to house a revered relic of the Buddha. The temple complex includes notable landmarks such as the Golden Canopy, the New Palace, the Royal Palace, the old courthouse, the Queen’s Bathing House, the National Museum, and the sanctuary. Take time to appreciate the impressive architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. In the evening, we attend a vibrant cultural show featuring twelve traditional dances accompanied by ceremonial drumming and a dramatic fire-walking performance. Overnight in Kandy.
Day 6 - Kandy - Nuwara Eliya
We begin the day with a visit to a tea plantation and factory, where we observe the journey of Ceylon tea from the careful picking of leaves through to grading, selection, and the final drying process. This experience concludes with a tasting of authentic Ceylon tea at the factory. We then continue to Nuwara Eliya, a lakeside town often called the ‘tea capital’ of Sri Lanka and known as ‘Little England’ for its colonial heritage. Here, you can admire the well-kept bungalows with rose gardens, stroll through Victoria Park, and see the historic racecourse and renowned 18-hole golf course—one of the finest in South Asia. If you wish, you may also visit nearby attractions such as Lovers’ Leap waterfall or take in views of Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka’s highest mountain, which overlooks the town. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 7 - Nuwara Eliya - Tissamaharama
After breakfast, we journey southeast through rolling tea plantations, lush landscapes and remote highland towns. Along the way, we visit the Buduruwagala temple, where you can admire impressive ancient Buddha statues carved directly into the rock face. Our route then takes us to Yala National Park, where we embark on an exciting Jeep safari. Over the next three to four hours, we explore a diverse wilderness that stretches to the ocean, featuring grassy plains, forests and sand dunes. Yala is renowned for its rich wildlife, including elephants, wild boar, buffalo, sloth bears, deer, crocodiles and the endangered Sri Lankan leopard. Keep your eyes peeled for these remarkable animals as we traverse the park. Tonight, we stay in Tissamaharama.
Day 8 - Tissamaharama - Galle - Kosgoda - Kalutara
After breakfast, we set off on a scenic drive to Galle, a city shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences. We explore the Dutch-built fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, wandering through its network of historic lanes lined with colonial-era buildings. Highlights include the Dutch Reformed Church and the Meera Mosque, both reflecting the city’s diverse heritage. Continuing north to Kosgoda, we visit the renowned turtle hatchery, where several species—including the endangered hawksbill—are protected. Here, you can observe tanks with newly hatched turtles before they are released into the sea. We then travel onwards to Kalutara for an overnight stay.
