Itinerary
Day 1 - Stockholm
Welcome to Stockholm. We transfer you to the hotel, and in the afternoon we share practical information – either in person or via the noticeboard at reception. You then have free time.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Stockholm - Mora
After breakfast we join a local guide for a tour of this beautiful capital of 14 islands linked by bridges, where water is everywhere. We explore Gamla Stan – the ‘city between the bridges’ – taking in the Nobel Museum beside Stortorget, the Cathedral and the Royal Palace, and we pause at Fjällgatan for a sweeping view. You then have free time. At about 16:00 we leave for northwest Sweden, crossing gentle landscapes of hills, farmland, small towns and lakes, and arrive in Mora in the evening – a small city between two lakes where, in 1521, Gustav I won support to resist the Danish occupation.
Day 3 - Mora - Funäsdalen - Roros - Trondheim
We depart early for Norway, travelling through vast forests, lakes and mountains. We pause in Funäsdalen, a popular ski resort, then continue to Røros for lunch and time to explore this historic mining town – a World Heritage Site with a picturesque centre, old miners’ houses and a museum devoted to the former foundry. We then continue to Trondheim on Norway’s central coast, the country’s third largest city with Viking roots and a medieval past, home to an 11th–century cathedral and the iconic old bridge over the canal. In the evening you can sample Trondheim’s lively dining and nightlife.
Day 4 - Trondheim - Kristiansund - Atlantic Road - Molde
After time to explore central Trondheim, we trace the Norwegian Sea with superb views of coastline and fjords, crossing one fjord by ferry to reach Kristiansund. Spread over several islands linked by bridges and embankments, its cobbled centre is ideal for a stroll and lunch. Later we visit Kvernes Stave Church (admission included), a 14th–century treasure with a remarkable 300–year–old ship model and altarpieces dedicated to the Virgin Mary. We then follow the famous Atlantic Road – eight bridges leaping between islands where the ocean swell can crash dramatically – pausing at a viewpoint before continuing to Molde for the evening.
Day 5 - Molde - Geiranger - Briksdalsbreen - Loen
We spend a day of breathtaking beauty among World Heritage fjords, glaciers and picture–book towns. We begin with a 50–minute ferry across the Romsdal Fjord, climb snowy mountains and descend towards magnificent Storfjorden. Another ferry of around 30 minutes carries us past snow–capped peaks to the Eagle Viewpoint above Geirangerfjord – one of Norway’s most spectacular vistas. We arrive in Geiranger, whose fjord is a World Heritage Site, and you have free time – perhaps take a boat trip, follow paths by the waterfalls that meet the town, or relax in the village. After lunch we continue through dramatic scenery to Briksdalsbreen, an awe–inspiring glacier in a superb natural setting, with time to walk from the base to the ice – on foot or by optional electric vehicle. Dinner is included, and we overnight in Loen, a charming fjord–side town where you can ride one of the world’s steepest cable cars from sea level to over 1,000 metres.
Day 6 - Loen - Bergen
We set off early, with just under 300 kilometres of glorious scenery between us and Bergen – along fjord shores, over mountains and including a scenic ferry crossing. We arrive around lunchtime and include a cable car ride up Fløyen for sweeping views over the city. Afterwards you have free time to explore Norway’s second city – you could stroll through Bryggen, the historic dock district of brightly coloured wooden buildings, or visit the Aquarium or the lively fish market.
Day 7 - Bergen - Eidfjord - Voringfossen - Geilo - Oslo
We leave Bergen early and journey into the heart of Norway, crossing the impressive suspension bridge over the Hardangerfjord. We pause in Eidfjord on the water’s edge, then visit Vøringsfossen – often considered Norway’s most spectacular waterfall – with its thrilling 182–metre drop and superb viewpoints and bridges. We continue across stark high plateaus dotted with small lakes – frozen for much of the year – to Geilo, a popular ski resort, for lunch. In the afternoon we travel on to Oslo, arriving in the evening; you might like to explore the lively centre, stroll the historic harbour or head to the rooftop of the modern Opera House.
Day 8 - Oslo - Oslo - Copenhagen Ferry
In the morning we take a panoramic tour of Oslo, Europe’s green capital set amid magnificent scenery. With our local guide we pass the Royal Palace, pause in Frogner Park to admire its remarkable sculptures, and see the exterior of City Hall, the old port and the new Opera House. You then have free time – perhaps visit one of the city’s noted museums. After lunch we board a modern night ferry – with cruise–style comforts – and sail for Denmark. We spend the afternoon and night on board, with cabin accommodation and breakfast included. Note: scheduled departure 16:30 (boarding 15:30) and arrival in Copenhagen at 10:00 – schedules are subject to change.
Day 9 - Oslo - Copenhagen Ferry - Copenhagen
We arrive in Copenhagen in the morning and begin a panoramic tour with a local guide. Celebrated for quality of life, sustainability and cultural heritage, the city reveals itself on a combined coach and walking tour as we see the Little Mermaid, Nyhavn with its colourful historic buildings, the exterior of Amalienborg Palace – residence of the Danish royal family – City Hall Square and the Tivoli area. The afternoon is free.
Day 10 - Copenhagen - Rostock - Szczecin
After breakfast we head to Gedser, the southernmost point of Scandinavia, and around 11:00 board a modern ferry to Germany for a two–hour Baltic crossing – you may wish to have lunch on board. We arrive in Rostock with time to explore this lively city, home to the largest German port on the Baltic, whose vibrant old town features the Market Square, City Hall and St Mary’s Church. We then continue through Pomerania into Poland, reaching Szczecin in the evening – a historic university city on the Oder with a charming centre that includes the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle and scenic riverside terraces. You have free time to stroll and soak up the atmosphere.
Day 11 - Szczecin - Bydgoszcz - Torun - Warsaw
After breakfast we travel through the peaceful regions of western Poland – territory that belonged to Germany until the end of the Second World War. We stop in Bydgoszcz, where you have time to stroll this handsome city of parks and canals and to have lunch. We then head to Toruń, a walled Gothic city with a superb historic centre – a World Heritage Site – and the birthplace of Copernicus. You have time to explore, and you can visit his museum–house if you wish, before we continue to Warsaw, arriving by day’s end.
Day 12 - Warsaw
We begin with a panoramic tour of Warsaw with a local guide. Home to nearly two million people, Poland’s political and economic hub blends bold modernity with meticulously restored history. We stroll through the delightful Old Town – with many historic buildings, the Royal Palace and cobbled streets – reconstructed after wartime destruction and now a World Heritage Site. We visit the Palace of Culture, reflect on the history of what was once Europe’s largest Jewish ghetto, and wander through Łazienki Park with its Chopin Monument. The afternoon is free for museums such as the National Museum and the Warsaw Rising Museum, or to explore the lively city centre.
Day 13 - Warsaw - Olsztyn - Elblag Canal - Malbork - Gdansk
After breakfast we head for northern Poland. In Olsztynek we visit the open–air Museum of Folk Architecture (admission included) to see wooden houses, old mills and a traditional church – a step back in time. We continue to the Elblag Canal, Poland’s longest navigable canal, visiting a museum at the site where boats are hauled over land on rails to overcome changes in elevation. Next we go to Malbork to visit its impressive castle (admission included – green route), one of Europe’s largest medieval fortresses, built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order and now a World Heritage Site. We arrive in Gdansk in the evening; its historic centre is stunning and lively, and you might enjoy an evening stroll.
Day 14 - Gdansk - Sopot - Ferry Sopot Karlskrona
After breakfast we visit the European Solidarity Centre – a striking contemporary building commemorating the Solidarity movement, including the monument to the fallen workers – then we include admission to the Museum of the Second World War, an impressive institution opened in 2017 that powerfully recalls the 3 to 6 million people who died in Poland during that tragic conflict. You then have some time to explore the historic centre before we continue to Sopot, a charming Baltic resort with a long sandy beach and one of Europe’s longest wooden piers offering superb sea views. In the evening we board a modern ferry to Sweden – scheduled departure 19:30 – with overnight cabin accommodation and breakfast included.
Day 15 - Ferry Sopot Karlskrona - Vastervik - Stockholm
After a pleasant crossing we arrive in Karlskrona in southern Sweden at around 06:30. We continue to Stockholm, pausing in Västervik – a charming seaside town with a picturesque historic centre. In the afternoon we reach the Swedish capital, spread across fourteen islands of the Baltic archipelago and linked by bridges and ferries, renowned for its rich history, striking architecture and blend of modernity and tradition. The afternoon is yours – perhaps stroll through the historic centre or visit museums and parks. Our journey ends here – please check your flight time in case you need an additional night.
