Itinerary
Day 1 - Chiang Mai
On arrival at Chiang Mai Airport, we meet you and escort you to your centrally located hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure – you can relax at the hotel or explore the old town, which is encircled by walls and a moat. Stroll its lanes to browse artisan shops and savoury food stalls. In the evening, you could visit the night market to see a wide selection of local handicrafts, colourful souvenirs and tasty snacks – vendors are sure to test your bargaining skills. Overnight in Chiang Mai.
Day 2 - Chiang Mai
After breakfast, we set off on a half-day tour of Chiang Mai. We drive the winding road up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep – the city’s most significant temple, founded more than 600 years ago and set about 3,500 feet above sea level. Inside stands the city’s emblem, a copper-plated chedi topped by a five-tier golden parasol that enshrines relics of the Lord Buddha. On a clear day, the terrace offers panoramic views over Chiang Mai, and the final approach – a 306-step Naga staircase – is well worth the climb.Back in the city, we visit Wat Suan Dok – once a royal flower garden – with its large central stupa, and Wat Chedi Luang, noted for its impressive chedi first built in 1411.Overnight in Chiang Mai.
Day 3 - Chiang Mai - Lamphun - Lampang - Sukhothai
After breakfast, we depart Chiang Mai for Lamphun to visit Wat Phra That Hariphunchai – a golden temple complex with origins in the Mon Kingdom dating to the eighth century. We then continue to Lampang to visit the historic temple of Wat Phra That Lampang Luang. After lunch, we enjoy a scenic drive to Sukhothai Historical Park, arriving in the late afternoon to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site – the ruins of ancient Sukhothai, the first capital of the kingdom of the same name. Overnight in Sukhothai.
Day 4 - Sukhothai - Uthai Thani - Ayutthaya - Chai Nat
Begin the day in a spiritual way as we join locals offering food to Buddhist monks during their morning alms round. We then drive south, stopping for lunch in Chai Nat. Today’s route from Sukhothai via Uthai Thani to Ayutthaya follows the kingdom’s historical development – mirroring the southward expansion of Siam.On arrival in Ayutthaya, the former capital of Siam, we explore the Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We visit Wat Phra Si Sanphet and the adjacent Viharn Phra Mongkol Bophit to contemplate the golden Buddha, then continue to the atmospheric ruins of Wat Phra Mahathat, known for the Buddha head entwined in tree roots.Overnight in Ayutthaya.
Day 5 - Ayutthaya - Kanchanaburi
After breakfast, we drive through rural scenery to Kanchanaburi – a quiet town where the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai rivers meet. Renowned for its natural setting yet marked by wartime history, it is home to the notorious ‘Death Railway’ bridge, familiar from The Bridge on the River Kwai. We pay our respects at the war cemetery and visit the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre to learn about the harsh conditions endured by Allied POWs and Thai slave labourers during construction of the military supply railway. After lunch, you have the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Kanchanaburi.
Day 6 - Kanchanaburi - Nakhon Pathom - Bangkok
After breakfast, we leave Kanchanaburi on a scenic drive to Nakhon Pathom to visit the temple that houses the 127 metres high Phra Pathommachedi stupa – the tallest of its kind in the world. We then continue to Damnoen Saduak, known for its vibrant, colourful floating markets, where boats glide along the canals selling fresh fruit, vegetables and local delicacies. After soaking up the lively atmosphere, we travel on to Bangkok and drop you at your city hotel.Overnight in Bangkok.
Day 7 - Bangkok
After breakfast, we set out to explore the Royal Grand Palace and two of Bangkok’s most celebrated temples. We begin at the Royal Grand Palace – an architectural masterpiece that served as the royal residence from the 18th century to the mid 20th century and remains one of the country’s most visited landmarks. Next door, we visit Wat Pho, the city’s oldest temple, renowned for its giant golden reclining Buddha and its traditional Thai massage school. We then continue to Wat Traimit to see the 5.5 tonne Golden Buddha. The evening is free – you can book a traditional Thai massage, sample local flavours, or watch the sunset from one of the city’s rooftop bars.Overnight in Bangkok.
