Day 1 - Quito
We arrive at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, meet our English and Spanish speaking local guide and enjoy a comfortable transfer to our hotel. Expect a warm welcome, local insights and practical assistance throughout the journey, with time to ask any questions. Overnight in Quito.
Day 2 - Quito to Cotopaxi
We are picked up from our hotel in Quito and travel south to two national treasures – vibrant rose plantations and the awe inspiring Cotopaxi National Park. We learn how the country’s world famous roses are cultivated before heading high into the Andes. At Cotopaxi, we walk around Limpiopungo Lagoon, look out for Andean birdlife and, weather permitting, ascend to the José Rivas Refuge (4,800 m). We pause for hot herbal tea in the heart of the páramo with spectacular views of Cotopaxi, then enjoy lunch in a cosy mountain lodge. Overnight in Cotopaxi.
Day 3 - Avenue of Volcanoes to Banos
After breakfast, we journey along the Avenue of the Volcanoes towards Quilotoa, visiting – depending on the day – a traditional indigenous market such as Zumbahua or Saquisilí, alive with colour and sound. Tigua Community Painting Workshop – we delve into the artistic heart of the Tigua Community, renowned for colourful naïf works that depict everyday Andean life, and, guided by a local artisan, we create our own painting to take home. We then arrive at Quilotoa Lagoon. You may hike down to its turquoise waters or simply admire the panorama from the rim. We share an Andean lunch with a nearby community before continuing late afternoon to the charming town of Baños – a gateway to adventure and relaxation. Overnight in Baños.
Day 4 - Banos to Riobamba
After breakfast, we set off for the hamlet of Runtún to visit the Tree House and its iconic Swing at the End of the World, poised at 2,660 metres at the foot of the Tungurahua Volcano. We soak up panoramic views and learn about the eruption history of this active giant. The day continues along the spectacular Waterfall Route linking the Andes with the Amazon Basin, tracing the Pastaza River past cloud forest hills and countless cascades. A one hour hike brings us to the impressive Devil’s Cauldron, where water thunders into a narrow canyon. In the afternoon, we transfer to Riobamba and check in at our hotel. Overnight in Riobamba.
Day 5 - Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve
After breakfast, we depart for the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve, home to the highest peak in the country. We travel through traditional indigenous communities and the impressive La Chorrera Canyon, carved thousands of years ago by volcanic activity. We continue along a scenic dirt road to the Carrel Refuge (4,850 m), then follow a 1 kilometre trail up to the Whymper Refuge (5,050 m) – a chance to savour vast Andean views and the stark beauty of high altitude páramo. After descending, we visit the La Moya Community for a traditional Andean lunch and the Mountain Museum, which shares the story of the legendary Chimborazo ice harvesters and their enduring traditions. In the afternoon, we return to Riobamba with drop off at our hotel. Overnight in Riobamba.
Day 6 - Riobamba to Cuenca
After breakfast, we travel towards the Ozogoche Lagoons, passing Lake Colta and visiting the historic Balbanera Church – the oldest church in the country, built by the Spanish in 1534. We take in the mystical beauty of the Ozogoche Lagoons within Sangay National Park – cold, crystal clear waters in a dramatic Andean setting – perfect for connecting with nature, learning about local traditions and, with luck, spotting Andean birdlife. We then continue to Ingapirca, the most important archaeological complex in the country, to explore the intertwined histories of the Cañari and Inca civilisations. Finally, we proceed to Cuenca. Overnight in Cuenca.
Day 7 - Cuenca
After breakfast, we transfer to Mariscal Lamar International Airport at the scheduled time for your departure flight. Farewell – we conclude with unforgettable memories of diverse landscapes, rich culture and unique experiences.
