Itinerary
Day 1 - Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar
We depart Reykjavik at 08:00 with pickups at selected hotels and designated bus stops. Travelling by 4x4 bus, we head into the highlands towards Landmannalaugar, making a few scenic stops along the way. On arrival, we have lunch and set up camp, then lace up our boots for a first hike of around 2-3 hours through rugged lava, geothermal areas and vibrant mountains.
After the hike, you can unwind in the natural hot springs if you wish. In the evening, we prepare dinner in the communal canteen tent and camp overnight in Landmannalaugar. You will pitch your own tent and may be asked to help set up the group tent. A professional guide leads the day, your main luggage is transported between campsites, facility fees are covered, a lunch pack is provided, and transport to Landmannalaugar is included.
Day 2 - Trek to Lake Álftavatn
After breakfast in our communal canteen tent, we prepare our lunch packs and set off from Landmannalaugar towards Lake Álftavatn. We carry day packs with lunch, snacks and extra layers, while the rest of our kit is transported by 4x4 to the next campsite. The route crosses the Laugahraun lava field and passes Brennisteinsalda, with geothermal streams, hot springs, striking lava formations and colourful rhyolite slopes as we climb towards Hrafntinnusker at around 1,100 metres. From this high point we enjoy wide views over the volcanic landscape and nearby glaciers, in an area known for obsidian - black volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly. We then descend to Lake Álftavatn to set up camp. In the evening we gather for dinner in the group tent and sleep in our own tents overnight.
Distance 24 kilometres - around 15 miles. Active trekking time about 7 hours. Ascent approximately 900 metres - 2,952 feet. Included today: breakfast, lunch pack, transport of luggage between campsites, professional local guide, dinner, facility fee and use of the group tent in the evening.
Day 3 - Trek to Emstrur
After breakfast in our communal canteen tent, we prepare our lunch and snacks before setting off with views across Lake Álftavatn and its volcanic surroundings. The trail crosses varied terrain towards the black sands of Maelifellssandur, where dark plains meet green hills and wide views open to Mýrdalsjökull above the Katla volcano. We continue to the impressive Markarfljotsgljufur canyon before reaching Emstrur, where we set up camp and share dinner in the group canteen tent - this is our final night under canvas. Your main luggage is transported between camps, so you only carry what you need for the day.Distance 15 kilometres - 6-7 hours of active hiking - descent 40 m (130 ft). Included today: breakfast and a lunch pack, dinner, facility fees, a professional local guide, the group tent for evening use, and transport of luggage between campsites.
Day 4 - Trek to Thorsmork
After breakfast in Emstrur - with lunch packs prepared - we set out for the Þorsmörk valley. The route showcases broad volcanic landscapes, green valleys and mountains shaped by ice, with sections through birch scrub and dramatic river crossings. We take time to appreciate the area's striking geological features and photo opportunities along the way.
We finish the hike at the Basar cabin in Þorsmörk, where we swap tents for a warm, cosy night indoors in sleeping bag accommodation. Breakfast, a lunch pack and dinner are included, our luggage is transported between campsites, and a professional local guide leads the day. Distance 17 km - about 10 miles - with roughly 7 hours of walking and 300 m of descent - about 985 ft.
Day 5 - Return to Reykjavik
We wake to the birch forest setting of Basar in the Þorsmörk valley and start the day with breakfast before hiking to the peak of Stigönguhöfði. From the top we enjoy sweeping views of the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers and the surrounding Þorsmörk valleys and mountains. The route covers 5-6 kilometres - around 3 hours of active hiking - with a 600 m descent.
