Itinerary
Day 1 - Keflavik to Reykjavik
On arrival in Iceland, collect your rental car at the airport and drive across the Reykjanes Peninsula, passing broad lava fields - a striking introduction to the country's volcanic landscape. Continue to Reykjavik, the vibrant capital, for our first night. Driving - approx. 50 km (31 miles). Accommodation - Reykjavik.
Day 2 - South Coast Waterfalls
Leave Reykjavik and drive east along the south coast towards Kirkjubaejarklaustur, covering about 270 km - 168 miles - through a landscape of waterfalls, glaciers and volcanic plains. Your first stops are Seljalandsfoss - where a path leads behind the cascade - and nearby Skogafoss, impressive for its height and volume. You continue to Vik i Mýrdal for Reynisfjara's black sands and views of the Reynisdrangar sea stacks, then carry on through the vast, moss‑clad Eldhraun lava field - the result of one of the largest eruptions in recorded history - before reaching Kirkjubaejarklaustur for the night. If time allows, you can detour to Fjaðrargljufur Canyon for views from the rim. In Kirkjubaejarklaustur, you can also visit the Systrafoss waterfall and Kirkjugolf - the natural “Church Floor” of basalt columns. We overnight in the Kirkjubaejarklaustur area.
Day 3 - Skaftafell & Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon
Journey east to Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park, driving past vast lava fields with the Vatnajökull glacier on the horizon. Here you hike to Svartifoss, framed by dark basalt columns that inspired Reykjavik's Hallgrimskirkja, and take in panoramic views from the surrounding trails. You then continue to Jökulsarlon, where icebergs drift across the glacier lagoon, and visit nearby Diamond Beach to see ice fragments resting on the black sand.
Afterward head back west to Vik i Mýrdal as the scenery shifts from ice and water to volcanic sands and sea cliffs. If time allows, you can explore more of the Vik area or revisit places you missed the day before. Driving today is around 330 km - overnight in the Vik area.
Day 4 - The Golden Circle
Leaving Vik, drive northwest into the Golden Circle, starting at Gullfoss - one of Iceland's most magnificent waterfalls - where the water thunders down in two stages into a deep gorge. Next, continue to the Geysir geothermal area in Haukadalur to watch Strokkur erupt every few minutes, sending boiling water up to around 30 metres. Then head west to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for the Alþingi established in 930 AD and for its rift valley along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. After completing the Golden Circle, return to Reykjavik for the night - total driving today is about 300 km (186 miles) - and you can spend the evening exploring the city's museums, galleries, Hallgrimskirkja and the Old Harbour.
Day 5 - Reykjavik to Keflavik
Depart Reykjavik and drive to Keflavik International Airport - around 50 km (31 miles). Return the rental car at the airport and complete the necessary departure formalities, bringing your Iceland journey to a close.
