Day 1 - Tokyo
Upon your arrival in Japan, you'll be seamlessly transferred to your hotel in Tokyo via a shared shuttle bus, following the completion of customs procedures. The afternoon is yours to explore, unwind, or simply soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the city at your own pace. In the course of the afternoon, you will also receive essential information about the commencement of your tour. Enjoy the rest of your day, making the most of your leisure time in the captivating surroundings of Tokyo. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Day 2 - Tokyo
Today, we delve into the heart of Tokyo with a captivating guided tour that spans about five hours. Our day kicks off with a visit to Zojoji Temple, a serene spot that offers one of the city's most iconic views of the Tokyo Tower. The temple is renowned for its rows of Jizo statues, adorned with colourful knit caps and windmills, representing the guardianship of children.We then navigate to the energetic Shibuya Crossing, famed as the world's busiest intersection, followed by a peaceful stop at the Meiji Shrine, a tranquil sanctuary dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife. Our tour continues along Omotesando Avenue, where you can absorb the stylish surroundings as we make our way to the illustrious Imperial Palace. Here, we’ll appreciate the grandeur of its gardens and the picturesque Nijubashi Bridge.The journey then takes us through Akihabara, the vibrant Electric Town, known for its deep-rooted manga and anime culture. We’ll also pass by Kokugikan, Japan's premier sumo wrestling arena, en route to Asakusa. In this historic district, we’ll explore Sensoji Temple and the lively Nakamise Street. A delightful lunch awaits at a local restaurant before we return to our hotel for a brief respite.At 6:30 p.m., our cultural exploration resumes as we meet in the hotel lobby and head to the bustling Shinjuku district via metro, with tickets included. The lively streets offer a taste of Tokyo's vibrancy as we stroll towards a local restaurant for an included dinner. After an evening soaking in the electric atmosphere, we’ll return to the hotel, guided by our knowledgeable companion.
Day 3 - Tokyo - Kyoto
Today we embark on an exciting journey from Tokyo to Kyoto aboard the iconic bullet train, speeding across 500 km in a little over two hours. Kyoto, once the heart of Japan as the nation's capital from 794 to 1868, greets us with its wealth of history and preserved artistic wonders, largely untouched by the events of World War II. Known globally for the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which aimed to curb greenhouse gas emissions, this city is as significant as it is beautiful. Our exploration begins with a visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine, famed for its striking red torii gates. We then admire the Imperial Palace and Kinkakuji Temple, or the "Golden Pavilion", nestled amidst stunning gardens. In the afternoon, you can immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of Gion, a vibrant traditional district renowned for its geisha culture. The remainder of the day is yours to wander the charming streets and soak in the timeless ambiance of Kyoto.
Day 4 - Kyoto - Eihei-ji - Katsuyama-dinosaur museum - Katsuyama - Kanazawa
After enjoying breakfast, we will set off on our day's adventures, travelling alongside one of Japan's largest lakes. Our first destination is the quaint Shirahige Ginra, a scenic lakeside shrine that offers peaceful surroundings. We then move on to Eihei-ji, a historic temple-monastery established in 1244. This site is a focal point for Zen Buddhism in Japan, featuring stunning gardens and traditional Japanese architecture. As a key training centre for monks, it provides insight into the practice of Zazen meditation and a strict vegetarian diet, enhancing its spiritual atmosphere.Our travels continue to Katsuyama, where we will explore three fascinating locations. First, we visit the Dinosaur Museum, situated at Japan's largest dinosaur fossil site. Here, you will have free time to enjoy lunch and explore exhibits that include over 40 dinosaur skeletons. Following this, we will discover the Great Buddha of Echizen, accompanied by its grand temple, and a five-story pagoda which you can ascend for panoramic views of the surrounding area.In the evening, our journey will conclude as we arrive in Kanazawa, ready to rest and anticipate the wonders of the next day's explorations.
Day 5 - Kanazawa
On day five, we'll dedicate ourselves to exploring the captivating city of Kanazawa. Our day begins with an enlightening guided tour, introducing us to a city that, like Kyoto and Tokyo, was preserved from wartime devastation. We'll wander through the majestic castle area, featuring its formidable walls, and immerse ourselves in the historic Nagamachi district, home to samurai families of yesteryears. The neighbourhood retains its ancient charm with traditional residences, earthy walls, and winding narrow streets.Our exploration includes entry to Kenrokuen, celebrated as one of Japan's top three gardens, offering a glimpse into exquisite landscape design. As the morning tour concludes, we'll find ourselves at Omicho Market, a vibrant hub brimming with culinary delights, perfect for lunch. The afternoon is yours to savour at leisure, allowing you the chance to explore further or perhaps relax in this cultural gem of a city.
Day 6 - Kanazawa - Ainokura - Shirakawa - Hida village - Takayama
Today, we embark on a journey through the stunning mountain landscapes and historically rich villages of the Gokayama and Shirakawago regions. These areas, recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are renowned for their picturesque thatched-roof houses designed to withstand heavy snowfall, resembling hands joined in prayer. We will first visit Ainokura, a charming small village, before moving on to the larger and more popular Shirakawa-go Ogimachi. You'll have time to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy lunch in these serene settings.Our travels then continue to Takayama, where we’ll explore the Hida Folk Village Museum. Nestled in a tranquil setting, this open-air museum features over 30 traditional houses from the Edo Period, originally from various locations but brought here in 1971. Here, you can gain insight into Japan's past daily life by viewing the tools and utensils these houses still contain. Afterwards, you will have free time to wander through Takayama's old town, noted for its quaint wooden houses and traditional shops, offering a glimpse into the region's history and charm.
Day 7 - Takayama - Hida furukawa - Matsumoto - Tokyo
After breakfast, we will head off to Hida Furukawa, where we’ll enjoy a leisurely stroll through its charming old town. This town is famous for its vibrant festival, celebrated for its large drums and intricately decorated floats. We’ll visit the local museum to see these floats, costumes, and drums up close. Our journey then continues across the stunning landscapes of the Japanese Alps, famed for their snow-capped peaks for much of the year. Once we arrive in Matsumoto, we’ll explore the impressive Matsumoto Castle, often referred to as the "Crow Castle" due to its striking black exterior and history dating back to the 16th century. Afterward, you’ll have free time to enjoy lunch and explore the town at your own pace. Later in the afternoon, we’ll depart for Tokyo, arriving by the evening.
Day 8 - Tokyo - Busan
We will arrange a transfer to the airport for your flight to Busan. Welcome to Korea! After you navigate through border procedures, our assistant will be there to meet you. We’ll then provide transportation to your hotel, where the rest of the day is yours to enjoy in one of South Korea's most dynamic cities. As the country’s second-largest city, Busan offers a plethora of experiences. Later in the day, you will meet the group we’ll be joining and our guide for the remainder of your exciting journey.
Day 9 - Busan - Seokguram - Bulguksa - Gyeongju - Daegu
Today, we’ll embark on an enriching journey to the Seokguram Grotto, an 8th-century marvel perched on the slopes of Tohamsan Mountain. This renowned Buddhist site is a testament to Korea's ancient spiritual and artistic heritage. Following this, we’ll explore the Bulguksa Temple, acclaimed as one of the nation's most beautiful temples, offering a glimpse into Korea’s lush cultural tapestry.Continuing our journey, we’ll arrive in Gyeongju, the historical heart of Korea, which remarkably sustained a 992-year dynasty under 56 kings. You’ll have an opportunity to photograph the beautiful Woljeonggyo Bridge, an elegant wooden structure spanning the Namcheon River.Lunch will be provided before we visit Tumuli Park, where the ancient burial mounds of the Silla Kingdom await exploration, some of which are over 1,500 years old. We’ll delve into one of these tombs and then proceed to the Cheomseongdae Astronomical Observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest of its kind in East Asia.Our adventure will lead us to Daegu, Korea’s fourth-largest city. We’ll explore the historic Dongsan Cheongna Hill, once the base for Christian missionaries, and take a stroll down Dongseong-ro, a bustling street lined with trendy shops, cafés, and restaurants. We’ll spend the night in Daegu, absorbing the vibrant life of the city.
Day 10 - Daegu - Andong - Hahoe - Seoul
We'll start our day in Daegu by exploring the Yangnyeongsi Museum of Oriental Medicine, celebrated for its rich history in the field of medicinal herbs. Following this, we'll meander through the nearby Herbal Medicine Market, an area noted for its traditional herb shops and high-quality products, particularly the esteemed ginseng. Our journey then takes us north to Andong, where we'll explore the traditional Hahoe Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have time to wander through this picturesque village, which offers a glimpse of Korea's rural past. We'll also visit the Hahoe Mask Museum, showcasing an array of masks from around the world used in dances, medical practices, religious ceremonies, and theatre. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we'll visit the Byeongsan Seowon Confucian Academy, founded in the 16th century and set within a serene landscape beside a river. Our day will conclude as we arrive in Seoul in the evening. Weather permitting, we may stop at Banpo Bridge over the Han River, which is famed for its stunning fountain display that lights up the night. Enjoy an overnight stay in Seoul. Please note that the stop at Banpo Bridge is dependent on weather conditions.
Day 11 - Seoul
We will embark on an early departure to the Cheorwon region, home to a section of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), marking the border between North and South Korea. Our exploration begins with the Second Tunnel, a secret passage dug by the North Korean military and uncovered in 1975. Our next stop is the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, where sweeping views of the DMZ and glimpses of North Korea's border villages await. A small museum on-site offers insights into the Korean War. We then visit the deserted Woljeong-ri railway station and the Baek Ma Battle Memorial, which commemorates the bravery of a French UN battalion during historic battles. Lunch will be provided.Later, we shall visit a local producer of Makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice liquor, before returning to Seoul in the evening. Please ensure you have your passport with you, as access to the DMZ is subject to sudden closures without notice due to its military nature, in which case a revised itinerary will be arranged.Back in Seoul, our guide will take us to see City Hall, an architectural marvel resembling a tsunami wave. We will cross the street to admire Deoksugung Palace, elegantly illuminated at night, a perfect blend of Korea's rich traditions and modernity. A stroll through the vibrant Myeongdong district, renowned as South Korea's largest shopping and entertainment zone, will follow. The name "Myeongdong" signifies "bright town." Our day concludes with an included dinner at a local restaurant, after which we will journey back to the hotel via the efficient metro system, with tickets provided. Overnight accommodation will be arranged.
Day 12 - Seoul
Today, we embark on an enriching five-hour tour of Seoul. Our first stop is the UNESCO-listed Changdeokgung Palace, nestled within a tranquil park and comprising an impressive collection of palaces. Following this, we pass by Bukchon Hanok Village, a charming historical area full of traditional homes that provide a glimpse into Korea's past. We'll then delve into the nation's turbulent history at the War Memorial of Korea, offering insight into the conflicts that have shaped the country's past, with a strong emphasis on the Korean War, where international soldiers fought under the United Nations banner. Lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant, immersing us in the culinary delights of the region. Our exploration continues in the bustling Gangnam District, renowned for its array of shopping centres and entertainment venues. To round off our day, we visit the stunning Lotte World Tower, soaring 550 metres into the sky. You'll have the option to ascend the tower for a spectacular view (ticket not included) or explore the luxurious shopping areas and nearby park. Afterwards, we'll return to the hotel, leaving you free to enjoy the evening as you wish.
Day 13 - Seoul - Suwon - Jeonju
Today, we will explore Gyeongbokgung Palace, a historic treasure with over 600 years of fascinating heritage. Here, if timing permits, we may witness the ceremonial changing of the guard, adding a touch of tradition to our visit. Afterwards, we will leave Seoul and journey southwards, with our first stop being Suwon, the former capital known for its magnificent UNESCO World Heritage-listed walls. You will have the opportunity to marvel at these impressive fortifications and visit the Hwaseong Haenggung summer palace. Lunch will be provided at a local eatery, offering a taste of the region's cuisine. Our journey will then continue to Jeonju, where we will delve into the enchanting historic centre, Hanok Village. This area is renowned for its charming traditional houses, quaint shops, and intriguing art galleries that perfectly capture the essence of the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
Day 14 - Jeonju - Damyang - Haeinsa - Busan
On day 14, we depart Jeonju to explore the Sunchang Gochujang Village at the foot of Mount Amisan. Here, you'll find traditional hanok houses with courtyards filled with large clay jars, where expert craftsmen produce gochujang, the famous Korean chilli paste, using age-old techniques. You'll enjoy a hands-on experience making this iconic sauce. Our journey continues to Damyang, where we'll wander through the picturesque Juknokwon Bamboo Forest, a serene area perfect for meditation, offering some of the most beautiful paths in the country. You'll also have the opportunity to discover a range of bamboo products, with places like the Bamboo Museum highlighting their significance. Lunch will be provided, featuring a local delicacy: rice cooked and served inside a bamboo stalk. Our route, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, will bring us to Haeinsa, one of Korea's most significant Buddhist temples and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 802, Haeinsa houses the Tripitaka, a comprehensive collection of Buddhist scriptures carved on 80,000 wooden tablets. We then continue to Busan, Korea's second-largest city, renowned for its lively atmosphere, where we'll spend the night.
Day 15 - Busan
Today, we will embark on a captivating exploration of Busan, starting with a visit to the serene Haedong Yonggung Temple. Perched by the sea, this 14th-century Buddhist temple offers a unique spiritual experience against a stunning coastal backdrop. Returning to the city, we'll pay our respects at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery, a poignant site commemorating international soldiers. Our next stop will be South Korea's largest fish market, bustling with activity at Nampo Port. Here, we'll enjoy an included lunch amidst the vibrant atmosphere. After lunch, we'll take a leisurely walk to Yongdusan Park, where a towering 120-metre pagoda stands as a city landmark. Later, we’ll head to Songdo Beach, providing an opportunity to glide above the bay on the nation's first marine cable car (ticket included, weather permitting) with panoramic views that are sure to amaze. Continuing our journey, we'll explore the vibrant Gamcheon Culture Village, with its colourful buildings, meandering alleyways, and charming art spaces, offering a feast for the senses.
