Itinerary
Day 1 - Colombo
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, where our representative will welcome you and introduce your specialised wildlife guide. You will then be transferred to your hotel in Colombo to check in and unwind after your flight. If you wish, you may ask your guide to arrange a city tour (not included) to explore Colombo’s rich history on foot, or you can take a leisurely stroll independently through its historic streets, colourful alleys and notable landmarks. Dinner will be served at the hotel. Overnight in Colombo.
Day 2 - Kataragama
After breakfast at the hotel, we set off for Yala, travelling via the historic fortified town and UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle. Once a key trading port connecting East and West, Galle reflects a rich blend of influences from Chinese, Persian, Arab, Indian, Dutch, Portuguese and British settlers. You will have time to explore its charming old quarter, with colonial architecture, narrow streets, vibrant cafés and boutique shops. Next, we visit Handunugoda Tea Estate, renowned for producing Virgin White tea—a rare and delicate brew made from the youngest leaves, prized for its purity and high antioxidant content. The estate manager will guide you through the tea-picking process, followed by a tour of the factory where you can observe tea production and sample over 20 varieties. After the visit, we continue to Yala, where you will check in to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure. Overnight in Yala.
Day 3 - Kataragama
Rise early for a morning Jeep Safari in Yala National Park with your wildlife guide. As one of Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest parks, Yala is home to endangered species including the Sri Lankan sloth bear and elephant, and is renowned for its leopard population. Your guide will provide insights into the park’s diverse flora and fauna and assist with capturing wildlife photographs. Return to the hotel by mid-morning for breakfast and some leisure time to enjoy the facilities. In the afternoon, set out on a second safari in a different area of the park, offering further opportunities to spot leopards and a variety of mammals and birds. Return to the hotel in the early evening to rest ahead of the following day’s activities. Overnight in Yala.
Day 4 - Kataragama
We start early with a game drive in Block 1 of Yala National Park, departing the hotel at 5:30am. This area is renowned for its leopard population—the Sri Lankan leopard is a distinct subspecies, smaller than its Indian counterpart, with a tawny coat marked by close-set rosettes. These elusive big cats are the largest predators in Sri Lanka and can often be seen prowling both jungle and open terrain during daylight hours, offering excellent opportunities for photography. Return to the hotel by mid-morning for breakfast and some leisure time. In the afternoon at 2:30pm, we set out for a final three-hour game drive in the same block. Use this time to ask your guide about the local wildlife and the rich history of the region, which has been home to several ancient civilisations. Remnants such as Indo-Aryan settlements and ancient irrigation tanks reveal the area’s long-standing agricultural heritage. We return to the hotel in the evening for dinner and a well-earned rest.
Day 5 - Kowul Ara
After breakfast, we travel for approximately two hours to Udawalawe. Upon arrival, we visit the Elephant Transit Home, a conservation centre established in 1995 that rehabilitates injured or orphaned elephants before their release back into the wild. This is a genuine rehabilitation facility, so you are invited to observe quietly as the elephants feed, play and regain their strength—please refrain from touching them. Here, you will also meet baby Bhanu, an orphan elephant supported by the Travel Kindly initiative, which allows travellers to contribute to his care until he is ready for release. After lunch, we continue to Udawalawe National Park, known for its large reservoir and open grasslands that provide an ideal habitat for elephants. The park is also home to spotted deer, sambar deer and a variety of bird species. We stay overnight in Udawalawe.
Day 6 - Deniyaya
After breakfast, we travel to the Rainforest Eco Lodge near Deniyaya, widely recognised as Sri Lanka’s leading eco-friendly accommodation. This lodge has earned the LEED PLATINUM award for Sustainable Tourism and is situated on the edge of the Sinharaja rainforest and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Sinharaja is the island’s last remaining lowland rainforest, spanning approximately 11,187 hectares and hosting the highest concentration of endemic plant and animal species in Sri Lanka. One of the rainforest’s unique features is its mixed-species bird flocks, which can include up to 48 different species, among them 12 endemic birds such as the red-faced malkoha, Sri Lanka blue magpie, ashy-headed laughing thrush, white-faced starling, Sri Lanka spot-winged thrush, Serandib scops owl and green-billed coucal. In the evening, you can explore the local area and enjoy the cooler climate after the day’s tropical heat. Overnight in Deniyaya.
Day 7 - Deniyaya
Wake early at 5:30 to begin a three to four-hour trek through the Sinharaja Rainforest, the last viable area of primary tropical rainforest in Sri Lanka according to the IUCN. A senior biologist will accompany us, sharing insights into the rich flora and fauna of this unique ecosystem. Over 60% of the trees here are endemic, many of which are rare. Along the trail, we may encounter a variety of wildlife including endemic birds, butterflies such as the Ceylon Birdwing and Blue Mormon, reptiles like the green pit viper, and numerous amphibians, especially tree frogs. We return to the lodge by mid-morning for breakfast and some rest. After lunch, we set out on a second three-hour trek through the rainforest to further explore its biodiversity. In the evening, relax and enjoy dinner at the Rainforest Eco Lodge, accompanied by the sounds of the surrounding wildlife. Overnight in Deniyaya.
Day 8 - Colombo
After breakfast at the lodge, check out by 11am and begin your transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your return flight. Although this marks the end of your journey through some of Sri Lanka’s most captivating wildlife areas, the memories and photographs you have gathered will stay with you long after you leave. It is advisable to arrive at the airport at least three hours before your evening departure.
