Day 1 - Paris - Blois - Tours - Villandry - Amboise
Welcome to your adventure! We set off for the enchanting south of France, venturing into the picturesque Loire Valley. Our first stop is the delightful city of Blois, famed for its stunning castle that stands as a testament to its rich history. We then proceed to Tours, the regional capital gracefully situated by the Loire River, where you will have the chance to enjoy a leisurely stroll and perhaps a delightful lunch. In the afternoon, we explore the magnificent Ch?teau de Villandry, celebrated for its exceptional gardens ? entry to the gardens is included. Our journey continues to Amboise, a captivating city offering a fascinating medieval quarter along the Loire River. We aim to engage all your senses with a delicious included dinner before heading back. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Amboise - Chenonceaux - Chambord - Limoges
Begin your day of exploration in the heart of the Loire Valley with a leisurely morning walk through the charming town of Amboise, renowned for its historical significance as the final home of Leonardo da Vinci at the Ch?teau du Clos Luc?. As we delve further into the region, prepare to be dazzled by the architectural marvel of the Ch?teau de Chenonceau, a breathtaking castle elegantly spanning the river. Your ticket to this iconic site is already included. Our journey continues to the impressive Ch?teau de Chambord, the largest castle in the Loire Valley, where we'll visit the sprawling park surrounding the structure. As we press onward into central France, we arrive in Limoges, an area celebrated for its exquisite porcelain craftsmanship. You might wish to explore its historic centre, where the Saint Etienne Cathedral stands as a prominent highlight.
Day 3 - Limoges - Sarlat - Beynac-et-Cazenac - Rocamadour
Today, we depart from Limoges for the Dordogne region, celebrated for its historic river and picturesque scenery. Our first destination is Lascaux, where we will visit the museum and replica caves to marvel at the prehistoric art (entry included). Following this, we'll head to Sarlat, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its remarkably well-preserved Renaissance architecture, offering time for you to wander and enjoy lunch at your leisure. We then proceed to Beynac, where we explore a magnificent medieval castle perched above the river (admission included). Our day concludes in Rocamadour, an awe-inspiring medieval village renowned for its cliffside sanctuary. We suggest descending the Via Crucis and later using the lift to return. Dinner will be included as we recount the day's adventures.
Day 4 - Rocamadour - Padirac Cave - Collonges-la-Rouge - Saint-Emilion - Bordeaux
On day four, we will visit the extraordinary Padirac Chasm, descending 75 metres below ground for a memorable boat ride on an underground river. Following this impressive experience, we will head to Collonges-la-Rouge, a charming village built entirely with red stone along the Way of St. James. After enjoying lunch here, our journey continues to Saint-Emilion, nestled in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region, where you will have time to walk through its picturesque streets and soak in the atmosphere. We will conclude the day's adventure by arriving in Bordeaux in the evening. Please note that the Padirac Chasm may not be accessible from November through March due to seasonal closures.
Day 5 - Bordeaux - Lourdes
Today, we invite you to explore the heart of Bordeaux, a city whose historic centre is a recognised World Heritage Site. Experience the allure of the "Water Mirror" and wander through the old town with its quaint pedestrian streets and the majestic 11th-century cathedral. You'll have free time to explore at your own pace, perhaps enjoying lunch at one of the charming restaurants along the banks of the Garonne River. Alternatively, you might wish to visit the Citè du Vin, an engaging museum dedicated to the history and significance of wine. After taking in the vibrant culture of Bordeaux, we will head towards the Pyrenees, arriving in Lourdes by mid-afternoon. Here, you'll have the opportunity to visit the famous sanctuary (we suggest attending the candlelit procession), with dinner included to conclude your day.
Day 6 - Lourdes - Carcassonne - Narbona - Marseille
Today, we venture through the south of France, starting with a stop in Carcassonne. Known for having some of the finest medieval walls in Europe, you'll have the opportunity to wander through its historic streets and absorb the remarkable atmosphere. After lunch, our journey continues to Narbonne. You'll have free time to explore this historic city in Occitanie, where the charming old town invites you to delve into its past. By late afternoon, we will arrive in Marseille, France’s second-largest city. We recommend an evening stroll around the vibrant Vieux-Port (Old Port), where a lively ambience and an array of delightful small restaurants await you.
Day 7 - Marseille - Arles - Avignon - Lyon
Today, we will delve into the stunning region of Provence, immersing ourselves in its rich tapestry of villages, landscapes, and history. Our first stop will be Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage city that showcases remarkable Roman and medieval heritage and offers a sense of the world that inspired Van Gogh. Following Arles, we'll visit the medieval village of Les Baux, where we'll have the unique experience of the Carrières de Lumières show. This captivating underground exhibition blends art, imagery, and sound within ancient quarries. After this, your time is your own to enjoy lunch and wander through Avignon, home of the magnificent Palais des Papes. Our day wraps up in Lyon, where we'll explore the historic old town, a World Heritage Site, before taking a cable car to the impressive Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica. From here, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the city. Note: Should the Carrières de Lumières be unavailable, we'll visit the nearby Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard instead.
Day 8 - Lyon - Tournus - Savigny Castle - Beaune - Dijon
Today's adventures begin as we depart from Lyon, making our way to the enchanting Burgundy region. Our first stop will be the charming town of Tournus, where you'll find an impressive stone gate and a grand abbey. As we move on to Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch and explore this historic town. We suggest a visit to the wine museum or the historic hospice for a glimpse into the region's rich winemaking tradition. Afterwards, we head to Savigny Castle, nestled in the heart of this celebrated winemaking area. Dating back to the 15th century, the castle houses remarkable museums, including collections of motorbikes, racing cars, planes, and helicopters. Our journey continues to Dijon, the vibrant capital of Burgundy, celebrated for its buzzing streets and striking medieval and Renaissance architecture, notably the Palace of the Dukes.
Day 9 - Dijon - Besancon - Colmar - Riquewihr - Strasbourg
Today, we remain in the Burgundy region, beginning with a visit to Besançon. This city, rich in Roman history, boasts a picturesque historic centre and an impressive 17th-century citadel offering panoramic views. Our travels then take us to Alsace, a region with a complex history of changing hands between France and Germany, which is evident in the local German-influenced dialect, architecture, and traditions.Our first Alsatian stop is Colmar, famed for its distinctive architecture, charming half-timbered houses, and meandering canals. This city is also celebrated for its white wine and delightful gastronomy. You'll have time to savour a leisurely lunch and explore at your own pace.In the afternoon, we'll visit Riquewihr, one of Alsace's most picturesque towns. With its cobblestone streets and vibrant homes, this medieval village looks as though it was lifted from the pages of a fairy tale; it's even said to have inspired scenes in Beauty and the Beast. During our visit, we'll explore a traditional winery, where you can enjoy a tasting of local wine paired with a typical sweet treat.We reach Strasbourg in the evening, where we suggest a stroll around the cathedral district and the charming area of Petite France, offering a host of cosy restaurants and scenic spots to discover.
Day 10 - Strasbourg - Epernay - Paris
Our day begins in Strasbourg, the heart of the Alsace region and the seat of the European Parliament. Immerse yourself in the allure of its historic centre, a delightful maze of medieval streets, a magnificent Gothic cathedral, and canals adorned with vibrant flowers. We’ve arranged a boat trip through Petite France, a scenic neighbourhood that encapsulates the city's charm. Later, we’ll make our way to the Champagne region. Here, you’ll be treated to the intricacies of Champagne production during a guided tour and tasting in a traditional cellar – an experience that showcases the craftsmanship behind the world's most esteemed sparkling wine.Continuing our journey, we will briefly stop in Épernay, the esteemed capital of Champagne. Take a moment to wander through this enchanting town, celebrated for its prestigious vineyards and wine cellars. As our day concludes, we’ll head back to Paris, where we’ll arrive in the evening, rounding off a day rich in sights and flavours.
