Day 1 - Paris - Rouen - Arromanches - Caen
Your adventure begins in Paris with an early departure, heading to the picturesque region of Normandy. Our first stop is Giverny, where we will delve into Impressionist art at Monet’s House and its splendid gardens – a true treat for art enthusiasts. Continuing our exploration, we'll journey to Rouen, the capital of Normandy, renowned for its medieval streets and stunning cathedral. Here, we’ll enjoy a leisurely walk and lunch amidst the city's historic charm. Our travels then take us to Arromanches, where the beaches stand as a solemn testament to the World War II landings in France. We conclude today's explorations in Caen, where you'll have free time to discover the lively central district. Please note, from November to April, Monet’s House is closed to visitors, and thus, the stop at Giverny will not be included. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Caen - Mont-Saint-Michel - Saint-Malo - Dinan - Rennes
In the morning, we set off for Mont-Saint-Michel, affectionately termed "The Marvel". You will have the opportunity to explore this iconic island city, perched dramatically amidst the sea, and visit its renowned abbey. Our journey continues into Brittany as we head to Saint-Malo. Here, you'll find strong defensive walls enveloping the city, adding an intriguing medieval character. Take this time to enjoy lunch and soak in the atmosphere. In the afternoon, we proceed to Dinan, a picturesque Breton village. We'll savour a traditional crêpe and enjoy a drink, fully embracing the local culture. Our day concludes in Rennes, the capital of Brittany, where we will explore its captivating historic centre, rich with monumental architecture and Breton heritage.
Day 3 - Rennes - Angers - Tours - Villandry - Amboise
Today, our journey begins in Rennes as we set off for Angers. For those interested, there's an opportunity to visit the city's castle, which boasts the world's largest medieval tapestry portraying the Apocalypse. Continuing our adventure, we will head to the picturesque Loire Valley, arriving in Tours, the capital of this enchanting region located along the Loire River. You will have some free time here to explore the city and enjoy some lunch at your leisure. In the afternoon, we?re off to Ch?teau de Villandry, celebrated for its splendid gardens and vibrant floral displays?admission to the gardens is included. As we conclude our day, we'll proceed to Amboise, where accommodation awaits in this charming city, renowned for its captivating medieval quarter. Dinner is included as part of your evening's enjoyment.
Day 4 - Amboise - Chenonceaux - Chambord - Limoges
On the fourth day of our journey through the Loire Valley, we begin with a morning stroll around Amboise. This charming town is home to the Ch?teau du Clos Luc?, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years. We immerse ourselves further into the region by visiting the stunning Ch?teau de Chenonceau, renowned for its unique architecture, built to straddle the river?your entry is included here. Our exploration continues at Chambord, the largest castle in the Loire Valley, where we'll wander through its expansive parkland. As we venture deeper into central France, we make our way to Limoges, famous for its exquisite porcelain. We suggest taking a leisurely walk through its historic centre, where the Saint Etienne Cathedral stands out with its impressive architecture.
Day 5 - Limoges - Sarlat - Beynac-et-Cazenac - Rocamadour
We depart from Limoges and head to the Dordogne region, renowned for its historical significance and captivating scenery. Our first destination is Lascaux, where we will visit the museum and a faithful replica of the ancient caves, which feature extraordinary prehistoric art – entry tickets are included. Later, we will explore Sarlat, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its beautifully preserved Renaissance centre. You'll have time to wander the streets and enjoy lunch at your leisure. Afterwards, we proceed to Beynac, visiting its medieval castle perched above the river, with castle admission part of your experience. Our day concludes in the enchanting village of Rocamadour, renowned for its cliffside sanctuary. We suggest strolling along the Via Crucis path and utilising the lift to return. Dinner is included in our stay here.
Day 6 - Rocamadour - Padirac Cave - Collonges-la-Rouge - Saint-Emilion - Bordeaux
Today, we explore the breathtaking Padirac Chasm, where we’ll embark on a captivating boat ride along an underground river situated 75 metres below the earth’s surface. Afterwards, we’ll head to the idyllic village of Collonges-la-Rouge, notable for its unique red stone architecture, and located along the historic Way of St. James. Following a leisurely lunch, our journey continues to the picturesque town of Saint-Emilion. Nestled in the heart of the renowned Bordeaux wine region, you'll have the opportunity to wander through its charming streets before we arrive in Bordeaux in the evening. Please note that from November to the end of March, the Padirac Chasm may be closed due to weather conditions.
Day 7 - Bordeaux - Lourdes
Set out to explore the heart of Bordeaux today, known as a World Heritage Site for its stunning architecture and vibrant culture. Start your day with a visit to the "Water Mirror," a captivating urban feature, then immerse yourself in the charm of the historic old town with its delightful pedestrian streets and the grand 11th-century cathedral. You have the morning free to wander along the picturesque banks of the Garonne River, where you'll find a variety of inviting restaurants, perfect for a leisurely lunch. Alternatively, you might choose to visit the Citée du Vin, an exceptional interactive museum that reveals the rich history and artistry of wine production.In the afternoon, we will journey through the scenic landscapes towards the Pyrenees, arriving in Lourdes by mid-afternoon. Upon arrival, you'll have time to explore the sanctuary, a significant place of pilgrimage. We suggest attending the evening candlelit procession, a truly moving experience. Dinner is included for a relaxing end to your day.
Day 8 - Lourdes - Carcassonne - Narbona - Marseille
Today, we set out from Lourdes and venture through the picturesque south of France, arriving at Carcassonne—a city famed for its impressive medieval walls, among the most beautiful in Europe. You will have time to wander these historic streets, soaking in the atmosphere. After a leisurely lunch, we continue our journey to Narbonne, where you can enjoy free time to explore this charming Occitan city. Known for its captivating old town, Narbonne offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history. As the day draws to a close, we head to Marseille, France’s bustling second-largest city. Upon arrival, we recommend taking a stroll through the vibrant Vieux-Port. This lively old port area is perfect for an evening walk, dotted with quaint restaurants where you might wish to indulge in local cuisine.
Day 9 - Marseille - Arles - Avignon - Lyon
Today, we journey through the captivating Provence region, experiencing some of its most picturesque locations. Our first stop is Arles, a city rich in Roman and medieval history and a source of inspiration for the painter Van Gogh. We then continue to Les Baux, a charming medieval village where we include admission to Carrières de Lumières, a unique underground spectacle that merges art, imagery, and sound within its ancient quarries. For lunch, enjoy some free time in Avignon, famous for the grand Palais des Papes. Our travels then take us to Lyon, where we explore the old town, a World Heritage Site, and enjoy a cable car ride up to Notre-Dame de Fourvière. This impressive basilica presents stunning views over the city. Please note that if Carrières de Lumières is unavailable due to closure or high demand, we will instead visit the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard.
Day 10 - Lyon - Tournus - Savigny Castle - Beaune - Dijon
We depart from Lyon and travel towards the enchanting Burgundy region. Our first stop is the charming town of Tournus, known for its impressive stone gate and large abbey, offering a glimpse into its rich history. Next, we journey to Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy, where you'll have time to enjoy lunch and explore. We suggest a visit to the wine museum or the historic Hospice de Beaune, known for its striking architecture and significance as a medieval hospital. Our journey continues with a visit to the Savigny Castle, a remarkable 15th-century structure nestled in the heart of the winemaking region. This castle is home to fascinating museums showcasing collections of motorbikes, racing cars, planes, and helicopters. As the day progresses, we make our way to Dijon, the capital of Burgundy, famed for its lively streets and an array of medieval and Renaissance buildings. Here you'll find the Palace of the Dukes, a testament to the city's grandeur and historical importance.
Day 11 - Dijon - Besancon - Colmar - Riquewihr - Strasbourg
Today, we continue exploring the Burgundy region, heading first to Besançon. This city, rich in history, boasts a Roman origin and a charming historic centre, crowned by a 17th-century citadel with commanding views. From here, we'll journey onwards to Alsace, a region known for its unique culture influenced by both French and German heritage. Alsace has long been a contested area between the two countries, and it proudly retains its distinct Alsatian dialect and Germanic traditions.Our first stop in Alsace is Colmar, a city renowned for its stunningly preserved architecture, featuring vibrant half-timbered houses and picturesque canals. Colmar is also celebrated for its gastronomic offerings and fine white wines. You'll have the chance to enjoy lunch at your leisure and take a stroll through its enchanting streets.In the afternoon, we will visit Riquewihr, one of Alsace's most beautiful medieval towns. Its cobbled lanes and colourful homes seem straight out of a fairy tale and even inspired scenes from "Beauty and the Beast." We'll also visit a traditional winery to experience a taste of Alsace, sampling local wines and a regional sweet delicacy.We will arrive in Strasbourg by evening. To make the most of your time here, we recommend exploring the areas around the cathedral and Petite France, where you can find numerous delightful spots and cosy restaurants to enjoy.
Day 12 - Strasbourg - Epernay - Paris
Today, we explore the vibrant city of Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace and a hub of European political life as it houses the European Parliament. You'll be captivated by the city's historic centre, renowned for its medieval streets, intricate Gothic cathedral, inviting canals, and charming floral displays. We'll include a serene boat trip along the canals of Petite France, which offers one of the most picturesque views of the city. Next, we journey into the heart of the Champagne region, where a visit to a traditional cellar awaits. Here, you'll delve into the fascinating world of champagne production during a guided tour and tasting session, revealing the secrets behind this iconic sparkling wine. Afterward, we'll stop briefly in Épernay, celebrated as the capital of Champagne, where you'll have free time to wander through its enchanting streets, lined with some of the world's finest champagne houses. Our day concludes with a journey back to Paris, where we'll arrive in the evening.
