Day 1 - Berlin - Wolfsburg - Celle - Hannover
Today marks the start of our incredible journey across Germany. We begin our adventure in vibrant Berlin and set off towards Lower Saxony. Our first stop is Wolfsburg, a city established in 1938 as a settlement for Volkswagen factory workers under the Nazi regime. Central to Wolfsburg is Autostadt, the city of automobiles, where we will spend time exploring its fascinating gardens and exhibitions dedicated to the automotive industry. Following the visit, we will have an opportunity to leisurely explore the area and enjoy lunch. Next, we continue to Celle, a charming town with a rich history evident in its well-preserved half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, and its impressive Renaissance castle. From Celle, we journey to Hannover, arriving by mid-afternoon. You will have free time to discover the capital of Lower Saxony, a key centre for culture, science, and economy. Its blend of historic and modern architecture, together with its extensive parks, offers a wonderful setting to explore at your own pace. At the end of the day, we settle in for our overnight stay in Hannover. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Hannover - Goslar - Gottingen - Bad sooden-allendorf - Eisenach
Following breakfast, we journey to the historic Rammelsberg Mines, a site of silver mining that has been operational since the Middle Ages. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers an intriguing look into the industrial heritage of the region. Admission to the museum is included, where we will learn about the miners’ lives and the site's enduring significance. Our next stop is Goslar, celebrated for its magnificent medieval old town, also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This enchanting town is known for its well-preserved half-timbered houses, quaint cobblestone streets, and the impressive Church of St. Peter.We then continue to Göttingen, a vibrant hub of academia and science, and famously associated with the Brothers Grimm. Here, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch and explore the town's charming historic centre at your leisure.In the afternoon, our travels take us across the scenic region of Thuringia, where we pause in the picturesque spa town of Bad Sooden. Nestled amid forested hills, this town boasts well-preserved timber-framed architecture and offers a peaceful retreat. Our day concludes in Eisenach, a town rich in Baroque and Renaissance architecture. Known as the birthplace of the renowned composer Johann Sebastian Bach, Eisenach also houses the Luther House, a significant location in the life of the famed Protestant Reformer. Dinner is included this evening.
Day 3 - Eisenach - Gotha - Erfurt - Leipzig
Our day begins with a visit to the remarkable Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched high above Eisenach. This fortress is steeped in history as the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German, providing us with stunning panoramas of the surrounding countryside. After exploring the castle, you'll have free time back in Eisenach to enjoy lunch and explore the town at your leisure. If you're interested in music, you might choose to visit the Bach House, the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach. Alternatively, the Automobile Museum offers a fascinating look at a collection of vintage vehicles in the historic main factory of East Germany's car industry. We then continue our journey to Gotha, where we can admire the grandeur of its Baroque palace from the exterior, and enjoy a leisurely walk through the picturesque historic centre. Our final stop is the lively city of Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, famous for its impressive cathedral and well-preserved medieval old town. One of the city's highlights is a charming bridge, lined with houses continuously inhabited for over 500 years. By late afternoon, we'll arrive in Leipzig, a city rich in cultural and historical significance, where composers such as Bach and Wagner once lived. Leipzig is a vibrant metropolis, having played a significant industrial role during the GDR era, and today it thrives with a diverse population exceeding half a million.
Day 4 - Leipzig - Dresden - Bamberg - Nuremberg
We depart from Leipzig and make our way to the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, a towering 91-metre tribute inaugurated in 1913. This impressive structure commemorates the pivotal clash of the Napoleonic Wars. Our adventure continues to Dresden, the capital of Saxony, famed for its Baroque and Renaissance architecture, regal palaces, and the idyllic Elbe River promenades. We then venture into Bavaria, arriving in Bamberg – a lively city with a stunning landscape. Make sure to enjoy a leisurely stroll through its quaint 'Little Venice' district. Our day concludes with a journey to Nuremberg, Bavaria's second-largest city, steeped in rich history and offering intriguing sites such as the former location of Hitler’s Coliseum.
Day 5 - Nuremberg - Kloster Weltenburg - Dachau - Munich
Today promises a day filled with intriguing explorations. We’ll begin our adventure in Kelheim, where we board a boat for a delightful cruise along the Danube Valley. Enjoy the scenic passage through the stunning Danube Gorge as we make our way to our first destination: Kloster Weltenburg. This beautiful Benedictine monastery, founded in 1040, presents a remarkable blend of history and tranquillity.Our journey continues as we visit Dachau and tour the poignant concentration camp museum, offering a sobering reflection on history. After pausing for lunch, we head to Munich to explore the impressive BMW Welt. This modern exhibition space of the prestigious BMW Group showcases its innovation and design.While in Munich, we'll see the Olympiapark, home to the architectural wonder that is the Olympiastadion, originally built for the 1972 Olympic Games. After these organised visits, you’ll have free time to discover Munich’s vibrant historic centre at your own pace. Perhaps enjoy Marienplatz—Munich’s bustling heart—or wander through Viktualienmarkt, the lively open-air market. The serene Englischer Garten offers a peaceful retreat, or you might opt to experience the city’s renowned beer houses.Please note that during the winter months or if the Danube’s water level is too low, the cruise is not available. In such cases, the itinerary will adapt to include a visit to Landshut, while Kloster Weltenburg remains accessible from the outside despite being closed.
Day 6 - Munich
Following breakfast, our journey draws to a close, but not without leaving you with wonderful memories of your travels.
