Day 1 - Athens
Upon your arrival in Athens, a friendly transfer awaits to take you to your hotel, setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead. After settling in, you have the afternoon to yourself – perfect for a leisurely exploration or relaxation. Make sure to visit the hotel reception area, where you'll find all the information needed to kick off your adventure. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Athens
Today, we dive into the rich cultural tapestry of Athens with a guided city tour. Our exploration begins with visits to pivotal landmarks, including the Presidential Mansion and the historic Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympic Games. We'll also admire the elegant National Library and the vibrant city centre squares. Our journey through the city includes a glimpse into Athens' modern developments, particularly in the neighbourhoods that blossomed following the 2004 Olympic Games. Our tour culminates at the iconic Acropolis, where you'll have the chance to further explore this archaeological wonder at your own pace, as admission is not included. In the evening, enjoy a leisurely transfer to Plaka, a historic district renowned for its spirited Greek tavernas. Here, you can soak up authentic Greek culture and folklore in a lively and welcoming atmosphere.
Day 3 - Athens - Kamena Vourla - Kalabaka
We will depart from Athens early this morning, heading north towards the scenic landscapes of northern Greece. Our first stop will be Kamena Vourla, a delightful coastal resort surrounded by captivating scenery. Continuing north, we will visit the historic Thermopylae Mountain Pass, famously known for its legendary battle. Our journey then takes us to the village of Kastraki, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely lunch amidst stunning valley views. Following lunch, we will explore the magnificent Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering breathtaking vistas and unique monastic architecture. Admission to one of the renowned monasteries is included, promising an inspiring experience. We will end our day in Kalambaka, where dinner is provided.
Day 4 - Kalabaka - Thessaloniki - Melnik - Sandanski
On the fourth day of our adventure, we continue through the picturesque landscapes of northern Greece, making our way towards the inviting shores of the Aegean Sea. Our journey first takes us to Thessaloniki, Greece’s vibrant second city, where you can explore at leisure and enjoy a leisurely lunch. After experiencing the spirited atmosphere of Thessaloniki, we cross the border into Bulgaria, entering the region known as Bulgarian Macedonia. Here, we visit Melnik, a quaint town celebrated for its charming architecture and local wineries set amidst captivating scenery. Our day concludes in the serene spa town of Sandanski, reputed as the birthplace of Spartacus, where we settle in for the night and enjoy a delightful dinner.
Day 5 - Sandanski - Rila - Sofia
On the morning of our fifth day, we will visit the remarkable Rila Monastery. Nestled in the forested mountains of Bulgaria, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its striking fortress-like architecture and serene alpine surroundings. Continuing onwards, we will arrive in Sofia by late morning. After lunch, we'll embark on a guided tour of Bulgaria’s vibrant capital. Together, we'll explore the impressive St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the elegant Russian Church, and the city's diverse squares and avenues that reflect its Stalinist architectural style. Following our tour, you’ll have some leisurely time to delve into Sofia's inviting streets at your own pace.
Day 6 - Sofia - Bachkovo - Plovdiv
We begin our day with a visit to Bachkovo Monastery, Bulgaria's second-largest and historically significant monastery, dating back to the eleventh century. Nestled in picturesque surroundings, the complex comprises three churches and offers a serene atmosphere for contemplation. Our journey then takes us to Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Here, you'll enjoy an included lunch before we embark on a tour of this captivating city. Our explorations will grant you access to the remarkable Roman Amphitheatre, the intriguing Old Pharmacy, and the notable Armenian House. Each of these sites will provide insight into the rich tapestry of Plovdiv's history and cultural heritage.
Day 7 - Plovdiv - Kazanlak - Shipka - Etar - Arbanasi - Veliko Tarnovo
On our seventh day, we journey through the captivating landscapes of the Balkan Mountains. Our first stop is Kazanlak in the renowned Rose Valley, where you will visit a replica of the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with included admission. Here, we'll also explore the local industry centred around rose-based products. As we venture further into the mountains, we'll pause at the Shipka Memorial Church, a poignant reminder of the Russo-Turkish War. Our exploration continues at Etar, a delightful village that functions as an ethnographic museum. Following our included lunch, we head to Arbanasi, an ancient trading city celebrated for its fortress-style architecture. You will visit the Nativity Church here, with admission provided. Our day concludes in Veliko Tarnovo, the picturesque former capital of Bulgaria, known for its medieval charm nestled by a canyon. Please be aware that should circumstances require it, the visit to Arbanasi may be rescheduled to Sunday morning.
Day 8 - Veliko Tarnovo - Basarbovo - Bucharest
We will set off on an exciting journey to Romania, pausing to explore the Basarbovski Monastery, a remarkable spiritual site carved directly into rock. After crossing the border and the majestic Danube River, we will arrive in Bucharest at around 1:00 p.m. In the afternoon, join us for a sweeping tour of the city, where we will showcase the historic centre and the grand Palace of Parliament. Later, you'll have the opportunity to delve into Bucharest's vibrant atmosphere on your own. Dinner will be provided, ensuring a delightful conclusion to your day.
Day 9 - Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Sighisoara
Today, we venture into the captivating region of Transylvania, a land steeped in history and legend. Our journey begins as we traverse the scenic Carpathian Mountains and verdant forests. Our first stop is in Sinaia, where we’ll enjoy a peaceful walk amidst the landscaped gardens of the majestic Peles and Pelisor Castles. From there, we continue to the iconic Bran Fortress, often referred to as Dracula's Castle, dating back to the 14th century – admission is included. After taking time for lunch, we head to Sighisoara, a charming medieval city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its well-preserved architecture and cobbled streets. In the evening, we’ll indulge in a delightful dinner at Count Dracula’s restaurant, located in the very house where Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, is said to have been born.
Day 10 - Sighisoara - Biertan - Sibiu - Hunedoara - Timisoara
In the heart of Transylvania, you'll find a landscape rich with history and culture. Our day begins with a visit to Biertan, home to one of the region's remarkable fortified churches, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – your entry ticket is on us. Following this cultural immersion, we'll head to Sibiu, a city celebrated as a key economic and cultural hub, and at one time, the capital of Transylvania. Here, you'll have the chance to wander through its vibrant narrow streets and squares, soaking up the atmosphere while enjoying lunch at your leisure. In the afternoon, we’ll take you to the stunning Hunedoara Castle, renowned as Romania's most exquisite castle, where your entry is included. Our journey continues to Timisoara, where you’ll have the evening to explore the city's stately central squares and enjoy its unique charm.
Day 11 - Timisoara - Belgrade
Today, we set off for Serbia, crossing the border before arriving in Belgrade after approximately three hours. In this vibrant capital, beautifully positioned where the Danube meets the Sava, we'll embark on a panoramic city tour. We’ll explore the energetic city centre, admire the impressive parliament building, and take a leisurely stroll through Kalemegdan Fortress, which offers stunning views of the rivers. Our tour will also include a visit to the Museum of Yugoslavia, where we will see Tito's Mausoleum. In the afternoon, you're free to explore Belgrade's diverse attractions, perhaps discovering its lively café culture or visiting one of its many museums at your own pace.
Day 12 - Belgrade
Following breakfast, our tour concludes, leaving you with cherished memories of your journey.
