Itinerary
Day 1 - Waterfalls & Glacier Hike
Begin with a hotel pick-up in Reykjavik and head along the South Coast, where black-sand beaches, towering waterfalls and glaciers shape the landscape. Your first stop is Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland's most recognisable falls. Here you can walk behind the curtain of water for a unique perspective - bring a rain jacket. We then continue to Skogafoss, a powerful 60‑metre drop that often casts rainbows in the spray. You can take the stairway to the top for wide views over the surrounding countryside.
By midday you gear up for a 3.5‑hour glacier hike on Solheimajökull, a dramatic outlet of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. With crampons fitted and your glacier guide leading the way, you explore crevasses, ridges and ever‑shifting ice formations. If you want to turn up the adrenaline, you can upgrade to an introductory ice climbing session - scaling vertical ice under careful supervision, with all equipment provided. Throughout, your guide prioritises safety and shares insights into Iceland's glaciers and how they are changing.
After a full day outdoors, you settle into our South Coast accommodation to rest and recharge for tomorrow's adventures.
Day 2 - Hiking Thorsmork
Begin with an 08:00 pickup in South Iceland and drive through lava fields and mountains towards the Highlands. After about an hour you leave the main road, take rugged 4x4 tracks and ford glacial rivers into Thorsmörk - a secluded valley framed by the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers.
Your first stop is Gigjökull, an outlet glacier reshaped by the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption. We walk across black volcanic sands and learn how the landscape changed during the event.
You then venture into Stakkholtsgja Canyon for a roughly 2 km walk, crossing small streams en route to a cave with a waterfall at its head - a striking spot for photos amid moss-clad cliffs.
Midday, you pause at Langidalur Hut for a wilderness BBQ. Enjoy a freshly grilled meal with a choice of Icelandic lamb, fish or vegetarian options, alongside rugbrauð, fresh salads and skyr, while your guide shares insights into the area's history.
In the afternoon you hike Valahnukur - a 2-hour round trip - to a superb viewpoint with 360-degree views of glaciers, serrated ridgelines and braided glacial rivers across the Thorsmörk valley.
You return to Reykjavik in the early evening and can be dropped at your independently booked hotel, rounding off two days of memorable Highland exploration.
