Itinerary
Day 1 - Dimapur to Kohima
Dimapur to Kohima – 70 km – approximately 3 hours. On arrival at Dimapur airport, we meet your driver and guide and drive to Kohima. On arrival, we check you in at your hotel. The rest of the day is free and easy – you can relax or explore the surroundings at your own pace. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2 - Exploring Kohima
After breakfast at the hotel, we visit the State Museum for an insight into Naga tribal life and their colourful traditional costumes, then stop by the local market to see the insects and other ingredients regarded as delicacies. We pay our respects at the Second World War memorial – site of the famous ‘Tennis Court’ battle, often described as one of the bloodiest. We return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we visit Kisama Heritage Village – the venue for the Hornbill Festival held 1–7 December – to view the distinct architectural styles of houses representing Nagaland’s 16 tribes. We return to your hotel for the evening – overnight at hotel.
Day 3 - Kohima to Khonoma
Kohima to Khonoma – 20 kilometres, about 1 hour. After breakfast at the hotel we drive to Khonoma, a village known for its courage and valour, where villagers fought the British during their 1879 expedition to the Naga Hills. On arrival we take a gentle walk from the main gate into the village, with views of terraced fields on the surrounding slopes. We spend the day engaging with residents and meeting local artisans and craftsmen. After lunch we continue with a guided tour of the village to learn more about its history. Overnight with a host in the village.
Day 4 - Exploring Khonoma Surroundings
This morning we explore the village surroundings, then follow a gentle trekking route through the reserve forest to the Tragopan bird sanctuary. We enjoy a picnic lunch cooked over an open fire and return to the village by early evening. Overnight with your host in the village.
Day 5 - Khonoma to Tuophema
Khonoma – Tuophema (55 km – approx. 1.3 hours). After breakfast we drive to Tuophema village, then walk to the Angami village. Tuophema is a community-run village resort and we stay in traditional-style huts with modern amenities. After lunch we tour both the old and new Tuophema villages and visit the village museum. In the evening we enjoy cultural entertainment presented by the villagers. Overnight in community resort huts.
Day 6 - Village Exploration
Tuophema. After breakfast we explore the surroundings on foot, walking through the village and into the forest before following a trail to a neighbouring Rengma village – a soft trekking route taking around three and a half hours. On arrival we tour the village and lunch is served there. Later we retrace the forest trail back to Tuophema. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 7 - Journey to Majuli
After breakfast we drive 195 km – around 5 hours – from Tuophema to Nimathi-Ghat to board a public ferry across the Brahmaputra with fellow passengers. The crossing takes a little over an hour, depending on the river’s current. On arrival at Kamalabari Ghat we transfer to your lodge and check in. In the afternoon we explore a nearby Mishing village, meet residents and sample tea or local rice beer in their homes, then visit a local mask-maker to learn about this traditional craft. Overnight at a guest house or homestay.
Majuli – perhaps the largest river island – is a longstanding centre of Vaishnavaite culture in Assam, where Srimanta Shankardeva established the Eka Naam Dharma in the fifteenth century. The island’s natural setting also attracts migratory birds, including adjutant storks, pelicans and Siberian cranes.
Day 8 - Majuli to Dibrugarh
Majuli – Dibrugarh (155 km – 4 hours approx). After breakfast we transfer to Kamalabari Ghat for the local ferry to Nimathi Ghat, then drive on to Dibrugarh, a renowned tea city, and check in at the hotel.
Later, we visit Jokai Botanical Garden and Germplasm Centre – home to several endangered plant species – along with Shrikshetra Dham, a Lord Jagannath temple modelled on the shrine in Puri, and Koli Aai Thaan, a spiritual centre dedicated to Koli Aai. If you wish, you can also visit Sarumechlow and Bormechow Maidam – graves of two queens from the Ahom dynasty – the Ahom-era ruins at Dehing Satra, and the Buddhist monastery at Namphake village. You can browse the local market before we enjoy a cultural programme this evening at a heritage bungalow. Overnight at hotel.
Day 9 - Dibrugarh & Jeypore Rainforest
After breakfast, we set out from Dibrugarh for an excursion to Jeypore Rainforest – about 65 km and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes each way. Spanning 108 sq km, this evergreen rainforest receives rain almost year-round and is known for its rich biodiversity. It supports more than 102 orchid species and a wide variety of trees, including Ajar, Segun, Nahar, Bohot and Sam, with Hollong the dominant species reaching up to 50 metres. Wildlife you may encounter includes elephants, hornbills, leopards, flying squirrels, pythons, spotted deer and langurs.
We return to the hotel in Dibrugarh. In your free time, you can visit a heritage tea garden to learn about the origins, cultivation and culture of tea, tour a tea factory to observe the full CTC (Crush, Tear and Curl) process, and visit Mancotta Tea Estate – known for producing fine orthodox tea. Please note the tea factory operates from April to November. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 10 - Dibrugarh
