Day 1 - Tokyo - Kyoto
We will embark on an exciting journey from Tokyo to Kyoto on the renowned bullet train, setting off early in the morning. The journey covers nearly 500 kilometres in just over two hours, offering a glimpse of Japan's efficient rail system. Once in Kyoto, a city that served as Japan's capital for over a millennium from 794 to 1868, we will have the entire day to explore. Remarkably untouched during World War II, Kyoto boasts a rich artistic and cultural heritage. Our itinerary includes visits to some of the city's iconic landmarks. We will admire the majestic Fushimi Inari Shrine with its famous red torii gates, marvel at the Imperial Palace, and visit the Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the "Golden Pavilion," surrounded by tranquil gardens.After exploring these historical sites, you will have the opportunity to enjoy some leisure time wandering through Gion, Kyoto's vibrant and traditional district renowned for its geishas and lively atmosphere. Here, you can experience the unique culture and perhaps indulge in some local treats. Following this, the rest of the day will be free for you to immerse yourself further in the captivating charm of Kyoto. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Kyoto - Tsumago - Matsumoto - Tokyo
We'll journey through scenic rural landscapes to Tsumago, a delightful wooden village renowned as one of Japan's most picturesque locales. You'll have the opportunity to wander its charming streets and immerse yourself in the traditional atmosphere. We'll then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to Matsumoto, where the highlight will be visiting its impressive 16th-century castle, aptly named "The Crow" for its distinct black facade. After exploring the castle, you'll have some free time to discover more of the town at your own pace. In the afternoon, we'll set off for Tokyo, concluding our journey by the day's end. Do remember to check your flight times in case you need an extra night. While the departure transfer to the airport isn't included, our guide will be more than happy to suggest the best public transport options for your onward journey. Expect to leave with fond memories of your travels.
