Itinerary
Day 1 - Bohinjska Bistrica
We stay at Hotel Tripic in Bohinjska Bistrica or at Hotel Jezero in Ribčev Laz – breakfast and evening meals included.
Days 2-7 - Bled - Bohinj - Mojstrana - Bled
We spend the day exploring the walking possibilities around Bled, Bohinj and Triglav National Park. From Bled, Between Two Rivers to Talež offers a fine circuit through meadows and alongside two major rivers before climbing to a koča with sweeping views – 15km/9.5 miles – 5 hours. The Lake Bled Circuit is a gentle loop – 6km/4 miles – 1.5 hours – often paired with the short, steeper climb Above Lake Bled on Osojnica for the classic panorama – 3km/2 miles – 1.5 hours; you could swim at the castle bathing area or take a boat to Otok, or extend the day towards Babji Zob. Vintgar Gorge is a must see, following narrow walkways and bridges past rapids and green pools in a chasm over 90m deep – 13km/8 miles – 3.5 hours – best enjoyed unrushed. Below Babji Zob, the Old Hag’s Tooth explores pretty villages and the Sava Bohinjka valley beneath a striking tooth‑like rock – 11km/7 miles – 3.5 hours. Around Lake Bohinj, the Lower Bohinj Valley circuit gives valley‑wide views, alpine meadows and peaceful farmland and woodland – 17km/11 miles – 5 hours. Savica Waterfall climbs steadily to the parking area then up 580 steps to the cascade, returning on a quiet cross country path – 8km/5 miles – 2.5 hours – and can be combined with the Lake Bohinj circuit. The Mostnica River and Gorge traces sculpted limestone, green pools and rapids to a flower‑rich pasture with a shady waterfall, with two cafes en route and a small fee for the gorge section – 16km/10 miles – 4.5 hours. On Vogel’s rocky slopes, choose between a higher mountain route – 12km/7.5 miles – 5 hours – or a shorter option – 8km/5 miles – 3.5 hours; those prone to vertigo should avoid the section from 1615m to the summit, while both variants give wide views of the Julian Alps and the Bohinj valley, with the summit adding vistas to the south. The wooded heights of Pršivec lead over planinas to a lofty viewpoint – 15km/9.5 miles – 6.5 hours – with brief exposed sections; you may wish to pause at a mountain inn if time allows. In Triglav National Park, the Vrata valley to the Peričnik waterfalls climbs from the Sava Dolinka towards the foot of Triglav – mostly easy going with a steep pull to the falls and the reward of a close encounter – 17km/11 miles – 4.5 hours. Pokljuka’s forests and the ridge to Debela Peč ascend to Planina Lipanca beneath the summit – well waymarked, steep in places and rich in wildflowers, with outstanding views – 16km/10 miles – 6.5 hours.
Day 8 - Bohinjska Bistrica
We continue our Alpine walking with another day of routes around Bled, Bohinj and Triglav National Park. From Bled, the Between Two Rivers to Talež circuit blends meadow paths, two impressive rivers and a climb to a koča for far‑reaching vistas – 15km/9.5 miles – 5 hours. The Lake Bled Circuit – 6km/4 miles – 1.5 hours – pairs beautifully with the short but steep ascent to Osojnica – 3km/2 miles – 1.5 hours – for the signature viewpoint; you could add a swim at the castle bathing area, a boat trip to Otok, or lengthen the outing towards Babji Zob. Vintgar Gorge rewards an unhurried pace on narrow walkways and bridges above rapids and green pools in a chasm over 90m deep – 13km/8 miles – 3.5 hours. The route Below Babji Zob, the Old Hag’s Tooth wanders through charming countryside and the Sava Bohinjka valley beneath the striking rock – 11km/7 miles – 3.5 hours. Around Bohinj, the Lower Valley circuit strings together open alpine meadows, broad views and quiet farmland and woods – 17km/11 miles – 5 hours. Savica Waterfall climbs steadily before the 580 steps to the falls, then returns by a tranquil cross country path – 8km/5 miles – 2.5 hours – and can be linked with the Lake Bohinj circuit. The Mostnica River and Gorge follows sculpted limestone to an alpine pasture with a shady waterfall, passing two cafes; a small fee applies for the gorge – 16km/10 miles – 4.5 hours. On Vogel, pick the higher mountain path – 12km/7.5 miles – 5 hours – or the shorter alternative – 8km/5 miles – 3.5 hours; anyone sensitive to heights should skip the stretch from 1615m to the summit, though both options deliver sweeping views of the Julian Alps and the Bohinj valley, with southern vistas from the top. Pršivec offers a wilder feel over planinas with brief exposure – 15km/9.5 miles – 6.5 hours – and you may wish to call in at a mountain inn if time allows. In Triglav National Park, the walk up the Vrata valley to the Peričnik waterfalls climbs from the Sava Dolinka towards the base of Triglav – generally easy except for the steep ascent to the falls, which you can experience at close quarters – 17km/11 miles – 4.5 hours. Pokljuka’s forests and the ridge to Debela Peč rise to Planina Lipanca beneath the summit on a well waymarked path – steep in places, rich in wildflowers and rewarded by superb views – 16km/10 miles – 6.5 hours.
