Itinerary
Day 1 - Madrid
Welcome to Madrid. We'll meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. You'll have free time until the tour begins – please check the information boards in reception for details of the welcome meeting with your guide and fellow travellers. In the evening, we'll transfer you to Plaza Mayor and La Latina, famed for lively nightlife and tapas – you can choose where to dine, with Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern options.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Madrid
In the morning we'll take a comprehensive tour of central Madrid, passing the Paseo del Prado, Cibeles, Neptuno, the Puerta de Alcalá, Plaza de Colón and Plaza Mayor. We'll stroll through Retiro Park to the lake and the Palacio de Cristal, then visit the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium – home of Real Madrid – with admission included. You'll have the afternoon at leisure, and in the evening we'll provide the return transfer to the hotel.
Day 3 - Madrid - Granada
We'll leave Madrid early for the south, crossing La Mancha with a stop in Puerto Lápice, a Manchego village linked to Don Quixote. We'll continue via Despeñaperros to Granada, where lunch is included. In the afternoon, if you've selected the Alhambra visit, we'll explore the palace and its Generalife gardens with a local guide. Very important – visitor numbers are strictly controlled, so tickets are issued on confirmation and it's essential to provide accurate personal details when you book; ticket costs are not refundable if you cancel. In the rare event the Alhambra visit is not possible, we'll visit the Royal Alcázar of Seville instead.
Day 4 - Granada - Tangier - Asilah - Rabat
We'll depart Granada for the Costa del Sol, then take the modern ferry from Algeciras or Tarifa to cross the Strait of Gibraltar – tickets included. The coach does not make the crossing, so you must carry your own luggage on the ferry. On arrival in Morocco we'll drive through striking scenery to Asilah, a walled Atlantic town with a lively old centre, where there will be time for lunch. We'll then continue to Rabat, where dinner is included.
Day 5 - Rabat - Casablanca - Marrakech
In Rabat we'll take a panoramic tour to see the Royal Palace, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Kasbah of the Udayas. Around midday we'll continue to Casablanca for a short city tour with a local guide, including the exterior of the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. Later we'll travel to Marrakech. After reaching the hotel, you can take a traditional carriage ride to the famous Jemaa el Fnaa square. Dinner is included.
Day 6 - Marrakech
Today we'll discover Marrakech – the city that gave Morocco its name – visiting its stout walls, Jemaa el Fnaa square, the Medina, the Koutoubia Mosque and the Bahia Palace, with tickets included. Afterwards, lunch is included and you'll have free time to relax by the pool or in the garden, or to browse the souks. In the evening, you can join an optional Fantasy evening.
Day 7 - Marrakech - Ait Benhadou - Ouarzazate - Boumalne Dades
We'll cross the Atlas Mountains, leaving Marrakech's palm groves for high passes and Berber villages perched above deep gorges. We'll stop at the fortified village of Ait Benhadou, famed for film locations, and pause in Ouarzazate to view its impressive kasbah. Continuing through the Valley of Roses, we'll arrive in Boumalne Dades, where dinner is included. Note – in winter some roads may close due to snow; if necessary, we'll adjust the itinerary accordingly and access to the Sahara will depend on conditions.
Day 8 - Boumalne Dades - Todgha - Erfoud
We'll set off across the gateways to the Sahara – valleys of kasbahs, palm lined river valleys, rocky plains that yield to oases and adobe villages, and ancient fortresses guarding the routes. We'll visit the dramatic Todgha Gorge, where cliffs soar more than 100 metres on either side. On the way we'll stop in a small adobe town near Khorbat to learn about the local desert community, supported by a foundation project – access may be affected by weather such as river flooding. We'll continue to Erfoud. If you wish, you can take an excursion into the sand dunes to watch the sunset. Lunch is included.
Day 9 - Erfoud - Fez
We'll depart early from Erfoud to recross the Atlas Mountains through impressive gorges and landscapes, then traverse a high, chilly plateau inhabited by nomadic shepherds. We'll pause in Midelt, the region's main agricultural town, and later stop for lunch – included – in the Middle Atlas beside a lake in a lovely natural setting. The scenery then shifts to dense forests where winter snows are common. In Azrou's national park we'll look for lively colonies of monkeys. We'll continue to Bhalil, a peaceful Middle Atlas town with colourful lanes and houses incorporating former caves, before reaching Fez. Before going to the hotel, we'll admire views of the old city from the Marinid Tombs. Dinner is included.
Day 10 - Fez - Tangier
We'll tour Fez, entering by the bronze gates of the Royal Palace and visiting the Jewish quarter, bustling souks and the Tanners' Quarter. The city's vast Medina preserves an authentic Arab ambience like nowhere else. We'll finish with lunch included in a historic palace in the Medina. In the afternoon we'll head north on the modern motorway to Tangier, arriving in the evening, where dinner is included.
Day 11 - Tangier - Seville
You'll have free time in Tangier – perhaps for some last minute shopping – before we take the ferry back to Spain. The coach will not be on board, so you must take your luggage with you on the ferry. We'll arrive in Algeciras or Tarifa and continue to Seville, reaching the city in the evening, with dinner included.
Day 12 - Seville
In the morning we'll tour Seville, taking in the cathedral with its Giralda, the banks of the Guadalquivir and the characterful districts of Santa Cruz and Triana. Afterwards, we'll enjoy a relaxing boat trip on the Guadalquivir – included – for superb panoramic views. In the evening, you can choose to attend a flamenco tablao.
Day 13 - Seville - Merida - Evora - Lisbon
We'll leave Seville through rolling hills and wide pastures towards Extremadura. In Mérida, admission is included to the Archaeological Ensemble with its superb Roman theatre and amphitheatre, a World Heritage Site. You'll have time for lunch and a stroll through the lively pedestrian historic centre. We'll then continue into Portugal, stopping in Évora – also a World Heritage Site – known for whitewashed streets, Renaissance palaces and its cathedral. We'll arrive in Lisbon in the evening.
Day 14 - Lisbon
In the morning we'll explore Lisbon, the Portuguese capital of seven hills – a city of narrow alleys, azulejo tiles, saudade and luminous Atlantic light. We'll also visit Belém, from where the great navigators set sail in the 15th century. You'll have the afternoon free to wander and head up to the Bairro Alto and its viewpoint, or you could opt for an excursion to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the evening, we'll return to the hotel from lively Restauradores Square, lined with bars and cafés.
Day 15 - Lisbon
After breakfast our journey concludes – leaving you with wonderful memories.
